The field is set

Posted by: Jake Thomases - Posted in Uncategorized on May 23, 2007

Albertus Magnus’s loss to Kennedy today cemented the playoff field. Albertus was the last club eliminated. No one else can get in. Josh’s previous post contains the complete list.

Now we wait for the seeding meeting on Thursday morning. Here’s something to whet your appetite until then. This is Class AA in order as of Tuesday night, according to my calculations. The official standings may change if there are results that we don’t know about. The seeding committee uses a complex point system that will make the seedings look slightly different than the standings.

That being said, here’s the order, along with record in Section 1 and winning percentage.

Class AA
1. Mamaroneck 19-0 (1.00)
2. Lincoln 12-4 (.750)
T3. Ketcham 16-7 (.696)
T3. Fox Lane 16-7-1 (.696)
5. Mahopac 15-7-1 (.682)
6. Clarkstown North 12-6 (.667)
T7. Arlington 13-7 (.650)
T7. John Jay 13-7-1 (.650)
T9. Suffern 11-9 (.550)
T9. Scarsdale 11-9 (.550)
11. John Jay-East Fishkill 12-10 (.545)
12. Ossining 10-9-2 (.526)
13. Mount Vernon 10-10 (.500)
14. Saunders 8-9 (.471)
15. North Rockland 8-10 (.444)
16. Clarkstown South 7-9 (.438)
17. Carmel 10-13 (.435)
18. Yorktown 9-12-2 (.429)

Only a couple AA teams play on Wednesday. Scarsdale probably beats Lincoln, and Ossining probably beats Poughkeepsie. That leaves John Jay-Brewster and Yorktown-Greeley as the toss-up games. Let’s just say John Jay and Yorktown win. If all of those come true, here are the final seedings.

Class AA
1. Mamaroneck 19-0 (1.00)
2. Lincoln 12-5 (.706)
T3. Fox Lane 16-7-1 (.696)
T3. Ketcham 16-7 (.696)
5. Mahopac 15-7-1 (.682)
T6. Clarkstown North 12-6 (.667)
T6. John Jay 14-7-1 (.667)
8. Arlington 13-7 (.650)
9. Scarsdale 12-9 (.571)
T10. Suffern 11-9 (.550)
T10. Ossining 11-9-2 (.550)
12. John Jay-East Fishkill 12-10 (.545)
13. Mount Vernon 10-10 (.500)
14. Saunders 8-9 (.471)
15. Yorktown 10-12-2 (.454)
16. North Rockland 8-10 (.444)
17. Clarkstown South 7-9 (.438)
18. Carmel 10-13 (.435)

The bottom four teams will play in a Friday outbracket. Using these hypothetical standings, Yorktown would host Carmel and North Rockland would host Clarkstown South. The Yorktown/Carmel winner would travel to Lincoln the next day, while the North Rockland/South winner draws a trip to Mamaroneck. Quite a difference.

For those playing at home, the most important decision (and we won’t know the final answer until Thursday) is who earns the No. 3 seed and who earns the No. 4. The No. 3 seed has a significant advantage on its path to the championship game for obvious reasons.

As I said recently, you DO NOT want to play Fox Lane in a one-game scenario. The lineup and championship experience makes that a scary proposition. If the Foxes earn the No. 3, they’ll have a better chance to repeat than I thought they would. That’s why you can’t really pick a favorite until the draw is unveiled.

  2. section seedings

I don’t like how they do these seedings at all….. what is the point of winning your league if it has no impact on your section seeding…. arlington won there league but ketcham mahopac both have higher seeds in the section, thats a joke

  3. whoa

sectoin seed..you are 100% right. they should seed the league winners 1-5 then go about their business. and the yonkers league should never count!

Josh…JJEF has 13 wins, not 12. (From the coach)

  4. petro

JJEF has 12 wins one win was out of section doesnt count towards sectionals.

  5. Dnice

The seedings are done on section 1 wins, not winning percentage. That moves a team like Lincoln from a 2 seed down to a 9 or 10 team if these records are accurate.

  6. nick

how bout Class A cas there is major confusing goin on about this divsion

  7. whoa

Would anyone care to be a fly on the wall of the seeding meeting? can you imagine all those AD’s or coaches going thru this? That would make for a terrific reality show…air it on CH 22…make for great ratings!

Josh, Jake and Mel Kiper Jr. could host it. Then have a 1/2 hour show with brackets and have TV cameras in the gym’s for teams that make it and teams that dont.

    I have no life.

  8. Jake Thomases

whoa…I love it. Great idea. The committee announces that Carmel has made the tournament and you see a room of hundreds erupt like they just won the lottery. Then the camera cuts to Jay Bilas: “A bold move by the committee. The wins weren’t there but this team had the highest RPI of anyone in Section 1. Let’s go to bracketologist Joe Lunardi for more on the Class AA region.”

  9. baseball fan

South would have the highest RPI. They has some of the best teams in New York at their tournament and went to Tennessee to face some of the best competition in the nation. Next year everyone should schedule a game against every Yonkers team to get a higher seed.

  10. Raider baseball

Scarsdale baseball is the most underrated team in the section. With emerging sophmores like Wolfer and Morris coming along. Along with the key pitching of Markel will allow Scarsdale to upset Mamaroneck in the second round of sections.

  11. baseball fan

South beat Scarsdale 16 – 4 this year.

  12. Bill Mc Neil

Scarsdale will lose in round 1

  13. whoa

Jake…obviously, you and I both have no lives. I need to get some air.

Next you will be telling us you can get Matt Brown and Tom (buy a vowel) Nycz to do one of their patented still life video things to post here.

I’m starting an office pool for AA bracket, anyone interested? $10/sheet.

  14. Bob

Haha…Scarsdale upsetting Mamaroneck in round two. This isn’t tennis pal, there’s no way that can happen. It sounds like Mamaroneck will get a raw deal drawing either Clarkstown South or NR. The rules for seeding NEED to be adjusted.

  15. nick

lets not forget though mamaerneck has choked seveal times in the playoffs the past couple of years

  16. TuskerPop

Why doesnt Somers get any respect?

This team just keeps on rolling, getting very little media attention. The biggest spread they got in the paper was related to a game on Senior Day at Fox Lane, when they annihilated the 2006 Section Champs, 15-1. Rolls of film were taken at the game, but the genius photo editors at the Journal News chose to print a huge picture of Ari Fleisher throwing out the first pitch. Amazing.
Two days later, Somers easily took the “champs” again, 8-1.

The last time I looked, Somers was 18-3, and the number one seed in Class A. They held power-hitting John Jay (34 HR’s)
to just 5 runs in 2 games. Super-Soph Dan Zlotnick just blanked Brewster on MAY 23 (your top Class “A” nominee) on a 3-hit gem, 5-0. This team is so deep with pitching that a 2006 JV pitcher, called up to varsity after tossing a no-hitter, cant get a sniff of the mound his junior season
    (11 IP).

Somers beat Iona Prep, head-to-head, but they cant break into the top 5 in your “Power Rankings”, where Iona Prep has
    been hanging all season long.

Only person that could prevent this team from winning the Section 1 Class “A” title, and he wont be a player on the field.

    Journal News, News 12 Westchester:
    a little R E S P E C T, just a little bit…....

  17. Josh Thomson

TuskerPop…First things first: I know you don’t know me, but if you did, you’d know I would cover a different baseball game every day if I could. Unfortunately, I’m a writer and do not pick my schedule. Trust me…there are several teams I wish I could’ve either seen or seen more often: Somers, Mahopac, Carmel, Hen Hud, Lakeland, Putnam Valley, Sleepy Hollow, etc., etc.

As for the rankings, Somers was in the Top 5 this Monday here on this very website. Brewster was ranked just ahead of the Tuskers in Sunday’s notebooks because it won the first end of the head-to-head, but has since slid behind them. Somers also spent at least a couple weeks ahead of Iona Prep. The Gaels have since moved back ahead because they are hotter than anyone outside of Mamaroneck the last few weeks, having beat Fordham Prep (twice), Stepinac and Mount (twice).

Overall, I think we have given Somers a lot of respect, ranking it in the top 10 nearly the entire season. I also — again, on this very website — just included the Tuskers in a list of who I think can win Class A.

Other than more coverage, I don’t know what else I can give you. Somers is good.

  18. baseball

I have heard from coaches that there will not be a play-in game unless the teams at the end of the bracket are all tied, is this true?

  19. ED

Any word on last night’s scheduled games between Lakeland and Greeley?

  20. Bob

Who has Mamaroneck “choked” against recently in sectional play? They were awful and WERE PICKED TO LOSE in the first round of sectionals in ‘05 and ‘06, they were edged by top-seeded Ketcham in a classic second-round contest in ‘04, they won the section in ‘03, and lost to Ketcham in the semis in ‘02. As everyone knows, Mamaroneck has had phenomenal regular season teams that have been known to endure freakish losses in the postseason, but they haven’t “choked in the past couple of years”; although one could rightfully consider anything but an appearance in this year’s final a “choke job.”

Somers…don’t worry if the Journal News hasn’t covered you this season. It should only fuel your fire to win the section and continue forward. Your recent reputation has been that of a “lacrosse school,” (to those outside of Somers, anyway)which could feasbily explain the lack of attention to your team’s exploits on the baseball diamond. Nevertheless, Somers was ranked 2nd in the state recently by the NYS sportswriters…so someone is taking notice of your success. Like Mamaroneck, you are the rightful favorite to win the section in A, and anything less should come as a disappointment to you.

  21. Josh Thomson

baseball…If a team qualifies for the playoffs, I’d imagine they have to let them play.

ED…I don’t know. Sorry. The Section 1 website doesn’t have anything either.

  22. the Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

If you take Mamaronecks total body of playoff work in the last 20 years…there have been a lot of absurd losses. The most notable was when they had the championship won, but the first baseman got off the bag too early (2 outs in the 7th inning) the tying run came in from 2nd base because the catcher was in the infield celebrating what he thought was a win, the Tigers would lose in extra innings. You could not write a fictional story like that, people would just say it was ridiculous…but it was true.
Again, whatever Scarsdale parent who is tauting them as anything except a mediocre high school team at best should calm down. Scarsdale has never done anything in playoff baseball, and don’t have the horses to do it this year. They have NO shot at winning in the second round.

  23. the Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Lincoln being seeded high is a complete joke. How happy are you being the 15 seed and you get to pound on Lincoln in the first round.I hate to sound mean but the Yonkers division is a complete joke.

  24. Baseball Fan

mamaroneck has one glaring hole in their team – defense. Theyve allowed 47 unearned runs this year, accounting for 40% of their runs against. Either they pad their stats or they have something to worry about.

  25. Section one fan

how about Lakeland pulling out a huge win over Somers. I saw this game, and Somers really didnt impress me with the hitting, other that the HR by Zlotnic they were pretty much fooled by lakelands pitcher Hourihan.

  26. Dnice

Lincoln will be in the middle of the pack.

  27. baseball

how will lincoln be in the middle of the pack when it goes by win % ? it will be like last year when they got a high seed nd lost right away

  28. Dnice

It’s by section 1 wins. Many teams have played games down south, Section 9 games, and private school games. These games don’t count towards your seeding. Lincoln has done none of the above, but did not play a 22 to 24 game schedule like most teams.

  29. Lincoln

Don’t sleep on Lincoln. They could very well win their first roudn game. they are not a bad team at all and only lost 9-6 to Scarsdale today. This team is not like the otehr Yonkers teams and is actually a solid team.

  30. Dnice

Nobody is counting Lincoln out of winning a game, but they have not won a game outside of their league. There will be plenty of teams below Lincoln’s seed that are much more talented.

  31. live for baseball

Lincoln and Scarsdale are both terrible. South beat both by over a 10 run margin. Against Lincoln they batted 18 in the first innning and Soouth is lucky to get a 16 seed

  32. Jim

section one fan, you might have not been impressed by the hitting of somers in that game but if you were at the last game you would of seen them hit like they usually do.
