Baseball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Baseball anyone?

January
30

Clearly, I’ve been sleep-walking through the winter. There just hasn’t been much to offer in the way of baseball talk the last two months. Hopefully that’s about to change.

I don’t know what it was — maybe the pending arrival of Johan Santana in Queens — but I’m beginning to feel a little baseball in the air. So I offer you who I think are the top three offseason favorites to win their class:

Class C —
1. Keio: Unicorns are the favorites right now until someone proves otherwise.
2. Tuckahoe: With North Salem and Dobbs up to B, the Tigers slide up the ladder.

Class B —
1. Putnam Valley: Surprised? Last year’s Cinderella only graduated three seniors.
2. Rye Neck: With a budding ace, the Panthers will no longer be the little-team-that-could.
3. Nanuet: The return of its stars should make this one of the best teams in Rockland.
Honorable mentions: Kennedy, Briarcliff.

Class A —
1. Somers: A few reasons why — one, Tracy, two, Zlotnick, three, Battipaglia.
2. Lourdes: Always right there.
3. Pelham: The Pelicans wanted more love last year, so here comes the hype-machine.
Honorable mentions: Eastchester, Nyack, Lakeland.

Class AA —
1. Mamaroneck: Think they’ll be hungry come playoff time?
2. Mahopac: What a staff, anchored by Riefenhauser and Castellitto.
3. Ketcham: All I kept hearing was how this was a good, solid young team. One year later…
Honorable mentions: The rest of League I-C; John Jay; North Rockland.

Bronx/Westchester —
1. Stepinac: I think it’s the Crusaders’ year.
2. Iona Prep: The Gaels always come up with players, but they will miss Salem, Kopec and the Ardinos big time.
3. Mount St. Michael: Noticed that the Mounties have a couple underclassmen who showed up in the previous post.
4. Fordham Prep: Too reliant on seniors last year to not experience at least a little bit of a fall.
5. Salesian: Still up with the big boys.
6. Cardinal Spellman: Tough to compete in this league. No one knows it better than them.

Let me know what you think…if I can drum up some interest, I’ll keep the posts coming.

  1. Rye

We are looking forward to the season in Rye. We graduated only 4 seniors, and even now there are a lot of 11th graders. But the move to Class A will be challenging. Should be fun.

  2. BB Fan

How refreshing to see Class B favorites and no mention of Hastings? They had a great run the past few years, but it is time for someone else to step up.

  3. Rockland BB

Keep an eye on Suffern. They have a number of returning players. Their bats should finally catch up to their pitching.

  4. player

    DF is in B

  5. Josh Thomson

    player…You’re right. I changed it.

My fault…I should’ve known that from basketball season.

  6. HV baseball

dont worry Mamaroneck will be hungry come playoff time.

  7. tk

Watch out for Tuckahoe…the big 4 of Melendez, Boyer, Strickrodt and Siciliano…could be very dangerous. Lets not forget they were leading most of the time against Keio in that Semifinal game.

    Josh,
Your missing out on Beacon HS. They have 3 or 4 BIG time D1 players on that team. Josy Espinal who is a soph may be the best position prospect in the area. Add him to Steve Green from John Jay and the 2 are raising the bar in the area. These 2 will have college and MLB scouts all over them this summer.

  10. Josh Thomson

tk…I’m with you…Tuckahoe has as good a shot as Keio, but Keio’s No. 1 until proven otherwise.

nybb…Fox Lane should be strong, but after losing key seniors, including a few all-section players, it’s tough to put them in the top group. We have to see the holdovers do it first, at least in my opinion.

D! Dad…You may be right about Beacon.

  11. guy

D1 dad, i hope your joking about beacon..3 or 4 big time prospects??? there big time players are long gone

  12. D1 guy

Mamaroneck will go out in 2nd round this time. Unless Hagan pitches every game.

  13. Baseball ump

Suffern is going to be good. It will be between Suffern and North Rockland. South will again have no hitting. Suffern, North Rockland and Suffern have the top three pitchers in the league with Avilas, Fasano, and Giordano. Giordano will be the surprise. I umped him this summer and he has one of the best curve balls and plays an unbelievable third base. Avilas is already throwing 90 but suffern also doesn’t hit. It will be curious to see how Fasano pitches after last season post season. One of the best pitching duels was last year Giordano against Fasano in which Giordano won 2-1. They both pitched great.

  16. Rockland Boy

I dont know about the other sections, but North Rockland is looking like a big favorite for me in this years season. They have Fasano and Viole, who pitched in very key post season games. Also, they have a very well balanced hitting team, consisting of Landry, Sheehan, and Martinez. Watch out for them, they did lose key players, but they are still hungry to do it again.

  17. Scout

Beacon has 2 or 3 players that will be looked at by many ML scouts over the next 2 years. They are soph and jr’s.
Avilas from Suffern and Hagan will also attract a lot of people.

  18. Class C

    No Honorable Mentions?

  19. baseballfan

I think suffern will be the team to beat. With aviles, randazzo as their 1,2 and their 2,3,4,5 hitters returning they will be tough to beat.

  20. baseball

League 1-B is a toss up between North Rockland, Suffern, and South in that order…East Ramapo never really comes through and with the loss of O’Grady North has fallen greatly…if South can hit they will have a chance because NR and Suffern will be tough this year

  21. hold on

steven green is the real deal, hit high 80’s this fall as only a sophomore…and A LEFTY!

  22. anthony

why no mention of clarkstown north. They won the league 2 of 3 against north rockland, 2 of 3 against suffern, 2 of 3 against ramapo, 3 of 3 against clarkstown south

  23. baseball

North has no pitching…alot of returning players though but with the loss of O’Grady there is no talk of North any more, he has been there # 1 the last two years and you cannot replace him

  24. anthony

How will South have a chance losing 2 pitchers, starting cather, shortstop and centerfielder. N.R. losing mergenthaler, if suffern hits they will be tough

  25. baseball

Yeah South may struggle with only 2 returning starters and pretty much a 2 man rotation (giordano and ross) at this point and they need to hit…NR will be good, mergenthaler was not huge last year and fasano will step up pitching…Suffern has the pitching returning (aviles and randazzo) and the hitting as well

  26. bb fan

SOuth does have two strong pitchers returning and they have the strong hitting of Kolinsky who was out last year due to Tommy John surgery. He is ready to play this year and will contribute. The big problem will be with catching. Giordano’s curve ball is very difficult to catch because of all the movement and the senoir catch they have now will have a difficult time catching it. They do have strong sophmore catcher who should probably start. Ross pitched strong last year but after those two they really do not have any pitchers. ALso they will be weak in the field. Salerno plays a good infield and Giordano will need to play third when he is not pitching since he is the only reliable thrid baseman on the team. Hitting is going to be a big problem again this year. Suffern will definetly be the team to beat if they could hit like South they only have one consistant hitter Matt A. Brenner has a terrible year last year and they need him rebound. South might be hurt because again they have scheduled a very difficult schedule including Mamorack.. This might hurt them. North is definelty hurting without O Grady

  27. baseball guy

kolinsky will be a huge help in the field for south also

  28. bb fan

Definetly agree about Kolinsky. He is one of the best first baseman. He will be also able to close some games. He has been working on strengthtning his arm. South still needs more than two reliable pitches with their difficult schedule. That is why north losing O grady is such a blow. They need a quality pitcher. Suffern has two good pitchers but they also need another pitcher to step up. Brenner could if he can get his head bacl in the game.

  29. baseball guy

its gunna be interesting cause at this point every team in 1-B are going on a two man rotation… so they all need a solid # 3 guy to step up…and thats right, kolinsky will be a good guy to get innings in the bullpen because i dont know if he is ready to start yet

  30. bball fan

Hey Josh, what do you think about saunders this year?

  31. Josh Thomson

bball fan…From what I heard and what I gathered following from afar, Lincoln was clearly the class of League I-D last season, beating Saunders three times in three tries.

I know Saunders has a good player that should be coming back in Andrickson Zorilla, a pitcher and infielder. Lincoln graduated a lot of its core players, many of which practiced together throughout last winter to prepare for the season. Without that group, the door may be open in Yonkers for another team (maybe Saunders?) to take over.

  32. artemis

I think south will be a surprise this year you have giordano comin back being the ace and you also have a kid in trongone who did not pitch alot last year but came in and was pretty effective he will be souths diamond in the rough, and their under the radar player who will have success. also a senior named matt grossman and robert kelly are trying out and both can play pretty well and should help south become the surprise team of 08

  33. mike d

yeah i like what artemis wrote and ive seen the trongone kid come in against north with the bases loaded and no out and he handled it well by striking out the side without allowing a run

  34. North BBALL

No respect for North come on… alot of seniors returning… South is gonna be tough to there rotation could have potential…Giordano, Ross, Trongone, and if artemis says Grossman is playing he can be in that rotation also…they just need to have the hit this year and score runs…but the team to beat is definitly suffern they have the best pitching and hitting by far in the leauge i say they win it all but north rockland is always tough
    but anyway

    LETS GO RAMS

  35. suffern baby

your right north you got alot of srs but what good is it if they arent that great you lost your ace man, also giordano and trongone will be extremely tough to handle ross can be good but he walks alot and if you string a few hits together he melts down, but north im sorry you lost your best player. all i know is suffern suffern suffern

  36. PMHS Bball Fan

Pelham is going to be the powerhouse of Class A. They only graduated 2 seniors; both in which hardly played all year. They have several D-1 prospects. There league is weak with the only threat being Eastchester. However, they are slim at the pitching position. Look for the Pelicans to make a strong run at the section title.

  37. North BBALL

ya Suffern here ill explain the south pitchers… Giordano is a tall kid he throws hard good control and has a FILTHY curve ball… Ross throws hard and works the ball around but he gets rattled quick and once he is hes meatballs all day over the plate… Trongone is good i dont know how many hitter he will over power but hes got good control keeps the ball low hes pretty tough and Grossman (if hes playing) is a pretty good pitcher i played with him in the summer he throws sum gas and has a big slow hook but hes hit or miss sometimes he looked great other times not so great….haha hows that scouting report

    NORTH BASEBALL!!!

  38. lover of baseball

    Josh,

What can you tell me about that Giordano from South? Last year all I heard about was Baker and Darsee. Is he related to the Giordano from Westchester?

  39. section 1 parent

North was 9 and 3 against the league, did O’grady pitch every game. There are no Darsee or Baker on South this year. There are plenty of section 1 players who don’t pitch who are as good as south’s pitchers. Stop over rating everyone.

  40. bball

Hey it was someone from North that was talking about Suffern and South. North always complains, first football they wanted respect, now baseball. They couldn’t complain about basketball. Isn’t it funny how two of North’s basketball players are going to transfer to South to be on a better team. South parents you should fight against this. It only makes the classes at South overcrowded. O Grady will be tremendoulsy missed. He pitched against all the strong teams. He is a gifted pitcher. I only hope that he comes back from his injury North also lost some good hitters and fielders let alone their coach.

  41. M.T.

RN at number 2… pennel will be money at the top of the rotation, but their is no number 2 pitcher. McQuade cant cut it on the mound, look out for Mike Anderson to step up, 3 time COTY Carlucci takes a back seat as former URI catcher Tyler Slater takes the helm

  42. baller

Pitching can’t carry a team alone. South will still not have a catcher that can block the plate and they will lack the hitting that is needed. Suffern also struggles at the plate. Suffern needs Brennan to play like he is capable of. Hopefully, for Sufferns sake he did not peak to early. He was a disappointment last year and a major head case. Trongone from South is also a head case and routinely gets tossed from games because of his temper. North Rockland will be a very tough team. The league will be up for grabs.

  43. section 1 parent

all of north’s starters in the field were juniors last year. O’Grady will be missed. so will darsee, baker, ss, cf,and catcher for south. basketball players should worry about grades not transfering. no great futures in basketball for north or south.

  44. south parent

Giordano Trongone Ross Grossman- 4 good senior pitchers

  45. section 1 parent

theres plenty of those types of pitchers around the league, lets not get hysterical, stop over rating players. I’ve seen every one of them pitch a number of times.

  46. baseball guy

ok section 1 parent…since u have seen everyone pitch, who are your top 3 or 4 pitchers in the league??

  47. section 1 parent

don’t get mad, there not terrible pitchers just don’t over rate. fasano( n.r.), brennen, aviles, randazzo(suffern) vazquez(ramapo)you may not think so but north has pitchers as good as the guys you mentiomed from south. Kolinsky is the wild card.

  48. baseball guy

hahahaha just because u r clearly not a south fan does not mean u cant show their pitchers a lil respect…brennen? are u serious he hasnt pitched in 2 years…nd vazquez? when pitches look out cause u have no idea where its going including the stands possibly…thats a joke no more asking for ur opinion

  49. section 1 parent

brennan piched against north last year, how did north sweep south if south had such great pitchers. you asked me whose better not who pitched.

  50. baseball guy

oh ok cool brennen beat north last year…Giordano on south beat fasano of the RUNNER UP for the STATES 2-1 does that make him better?

  51. section 1 parent

brennan did not beat north, aviles did, south did not make the playoffs

  52. baseball guy

ok because south had to be in the play in game, they have no top pitchers…they only had a kid get a scholorship to Pitt. and another to Iona…like r u thinkin about wut u r saying…actually dont answer that we will see when the season comes if ur dream team of pitchers come through

  53. section 1 parent

that was last years seniors not this year I said they lost them, you’re mixing everything up, I did not say north had a dream team of pitchers, wake up. all I said is don’t over rate.

  54. bases

    Baseball guy,
Giordano did win the game that he and Fasano pitched in, but did you watch the game? the score was 2-1, neither team hit the ball so giving up two runs in 7 innings is saying something. 1 run is very good as well but that does not say that Giordano is better…they did go to the NY State Final game

  55. baseball guy

I’m not saying Giordano’s better. Fasano is a great pitcher, but you can’t rank Brennan or Vasquez as in the top three for pitchers.

  56. bases

Ok, that I can agree on…brennan has not pitched much so you cannot say he is bad, because of the innings he gets, and vasquez throws hard, but does not have the best control

  57. Hardball

north has as good of pitchers as south this year are u blind… id like you to name norths 4 pitchers this year that are better then the four senior pitchers from south mentioned earlier Giordano Ross Grossman Trongone and dont forget about Kolinski…

  58. south

Grossman is not even no the team yet he needs to still tryout and make the team as a senior.

  59. section 1 parent

hey hardball kolinski’s the wild card cause of the injury, the others are ok. ross piched 0 innings against north, trongone 1 and giordano 4 in a loss. O’Grady did not pitch all 23 innings against south,(last game 9 innings). so if norths other pitchers are so bad how did south get swept.

  60. baseball

Still waiting for you to name the top four north pitchers. The main pitchers that pitched against north were Baker and Darsee who are both gone. Just like North had seniors pitch against South that are also gone. North also lost there number one hitter Soloman.

  61. section 1 parent

norths 8 position players were all juniors, soloman can be replaced, who replaces souths offense from last year who were seniors(c,cf,ss,rf). 8 starting juniors and they won the league. darsee and baker 2 d1 pitchers and norths juniors hit them. I’m not going to name the rotation but I know outside of kolinsky there as good as the other guys. don’t forget south still has to score runs to win.

  62. baller

Kolinsky was never an overpowering pitcher. Maybe he was in New City Little League, which was a long time ago. He will only pitch one or two innings at a time. He is a great fielder and hitter. I believe that the only strong pitcher that South has is Giordano. I saw him pitch this summer for the Suffern Tigers. He is a very good pitcher with a great curve ball. He needs to add more pop on his fast ball. Joe From North was also on this team. He also pitched very well. He throws hard but needs another pitch. I also had the opportunity to see Randazzo and Vasquez who played on the Suffern Tigers. Randazzo does throw hard, however, he averaged 5 walks a game and Vasquez also throw hard but is very wild./ Vasquez is a great fielder and a great hitter. The top two pitchers in the league are Avilas and Fasano by far then there is a gap and Giordano, Ferraro and Randazzo all are about the same tied for third. If Giordano can add more pop he will close the gap. Randazzo needs to work on control and Ferraro needs to find another pitch. I saw Trangone pitch for the Stars and was not overly impressed. He is too small and too slow. Jake Ross does not even play summer ball so who knows. Brennan needs to atay in the field that is where he will play in college. I know that Ferraro and Giordano are being looked at by D2 schools so they can’t be only ok as section 1 parent says and FAsano is being looked at by both D1 and D2. After Giordano, South is hurting in pitching and after Ferraro North is hurting in pitching. The difference will be that Giordano will not have any hitting to back him up just like BAker last year and they have many holes in the field, especially at catcher and ss

  63. ball player

Section 1 parent you can’t judge a pitcher by seeing them only once or twice. Remember last year O Grady struggled in his first several outings. Nobody said then that he was overrated. He also struggled the first half of the game against South by walking quite a few before he settled down. South just could not capitalize because of their lack of hitting. We know that he is still a great pitcher. Every pitcher has an off day. Look at Baker in the sectionals and now he pitches for D1. Making a judgement after only seeing a pitcher pitch once or twice is wrong. You need to see them over a season in person or over the summer.

  64. s1 player

baller you dont know what your saying trongone hasnt got tossed in 3 years bro get your facts straight he used to be a headcase he mellowed out and your probly not that good so shut up

  65. section 1 parent

we will find out on the field. Idon’t know if north will pitch but they will hit

  66. baller is a homo

ok baller you dont know what your saying casue first off brennan pitched a total of 7 innings you cant rank the kid up there i nthe top 5 when he isnt a pitcher i would say giordano cracks the top 5 deffintily and apparently you have not seen trongone pitch to much casue hes small yes but he does not throw as slow as you think he has been clocked in the 82-83 you cant say he throws slow so sir i think you need to get your facts straight

  67. ball player

    Section 1 parent

We were talking about pitching where you claimed Norths is as strong as South. Now all of a sudden you realize that they are not. We know that South will struggle because of their hitting but you don’t have to also knock there pitching.

Trongone was tossed last year in a senior game.

  68. former teammate

When West Nyack won the state two years ago in senior league, Trongone had to be restrained many times by Coach Groggin in order to not be thrown out. He also does not throw 83. He is at about 79, which does sometimes throw a batter off. He could come up big for South. He is the dark horse. Last year the coach did not give him a chance. This year he will have to.

  69. section 1 parent

hey ball player norths pitching is as astrong as south, stop over rating players since tee-ball, if trongone throws 83 then brennan throws 103

  70. ball player

    Section 1 parent

You just wrote I don’t know if North will pitch. I am admitting that both schools have one strong pitcher Giordano and Ferrara. The rest have to prove themselves. Get over Brennan. He is a great outfielder and needs to start hitting again. Avilas is the man at Suffern and so is RAndazzo. Brennan will make a good 5th pitcher.

  71. player

not a chance north has the pitching south does, with Giordano, Ross, Trongone, and Kolinksky out of the pen…name 4 from north that could match up…because if i take both of their aces i choose giordano over ferrara every time

  72. player

And section 1 parent get off your knees for brennen seriously what is that all about…yeah and even tho north WONT pitch they will still be better than south? what are you saying? North lost the 3 pitchers that pitched against South last year (ogrady, Ashebrener, and smith) all they have returning is Barbetto and Gitlitz and byrnes who is coming off a rough year…so who are norths pitchers

  73. Section 1 Dad

I do not understand…north has lost their best pitcher, they do not ahve another pitcher that they can trust like they did for ogrady. suffern has avilas, north rockland has fasano, and south has trogone. each team has an ace, but who do they have that is good enouph to back them up?

  74. player

section 1 dad…trongone is souths # 3 pitcher just letting you know…it goes giordano, ross, trongone

  75. baseball watcher

    Section 1 dad,
are you kidding me? how can you possibly say that trongone is the ace for south. clearly the ace for that team is giordano. as for everyone talking about people throwing hard in the mid 80’s, how about aviles who hit 90 already as a freshman.

  76. viking player

    Section 1 dad

Trongone is definetly not the ace of South. He the number three pitcher. Giordano is the ace of that team. You must be Trongone’s father. How many innings did the coach even let him pitch last year. When he was desperate he threw in Depool or Kress because he did not trust Trongone. In fact, Depool might end up being the number 3 pitcher.

  77. baller

    I agree totally

  78. Section 1 Dad

I am sorry, when i was writing this i did not think of giordano. he is the ace, and this is not his father viking player. just to clear all this up

  79. ramapo baby

man all yall just puttin down trongone lest we forget the kid won state for that team he pitched everygame with a broken toe man and the kid does pop 83 son i was at a showcase with him and the gun was pretty legit and honestly i think hes souths number 2 and depool threw one inn last year you dumb basterd so dont say he threw him over trongone and kress was a starter for them, and ill tell ross aint nothin

  80. former teamate too

trongone was tossed in that senior game casue he saw a player dogg it and yelled at him, and the other former teamate i was on that team and i dont remember trongone gettin restrained that much cause the kid could barely walk so stop talkin bad about a teamate, especially one your prob friends with. north has no where near the pitchin south does girodan is dirty trongone will be a diamond in the rough and ross is a toss up, and ill tell you depool kolinsky in the pen souths got the pitchin edge

  81. north parent

    Josh,
what do you make of souths pitching, and what have you seen from guys like trongone and ross behind giordano

  82. Josh Thomson

north parent…I only saw South play once and it wasn’t a good one: the Class AA outbracket loss to Carmel. I’ll have Jake check in with his thoughts on the pitching situation.

  83. Jake Thomases

Wow, everybody’s getting fired up about baseball. I love it. Hope this carries over to the season. As usual there’s a lot of talent in Rockland this year and it’d be great to see people at the games watching these guys play. After following Sean Giblin’s journey from high school to pro ball last season I can testify how mych fun it is to watch these guys mature.

As for the pitching war that’s being waged here, the only definitive thing I’ll say right now is that Aviles is the man. I saw him a couple times last year and he was always top notch. The kid comes from pitching stock and I have a feeling I’ll be talking a lot about him this year. North’s and South’s staffs are too up in the air. Take Trongone for example. What did he throw, seven innings last year? You can’t judge anything from that. Even Giordano, who’ll be the ace, threw more than five innings in a game exactly once, and that was in a blowout of Lincoln.

When I was talking to (retired North coach) Bob Bauer a couple months ago he told me one of his biggest reasons to keep coaching was that he thought North had a chance to go all the way this season. He may be partisan but he’s always struck me as pretty grounded. I don’t think he’d say it if he didn’t think his former team was primed to do something big.

  84. bball

    Jake ,

Too bad that you dont follow any summer ball. Where both Giordano and Ferrara pitched over 50 innings in a six week stretch. Yes, Avilas is the man, but the Journal News never really came and watched South and even North. They only care about North Rockland and Suffern. Randazzo of Suffern also threw over 50 innings and all had strong impressive summers. Josh its amazing you only saw South once when they had two pitchers being recruited by Division 1 teams. But then again you usually talk about Westchester ball only.

Trongone does not throw 83, he tops out at 80.

  85. bball

    Jake,

Giordano also pitched 6 1/3 innings against North Rockland in a pitcing duel between him and Fasano where South beat NR. Both pitchers pitched great and he was honorable mention all league so give hime some credit. So it was not exactly one game.

  86. baseball

I love how when someone asks about South or North the FIRST thing that Jake or Josh mentions is that Suffern has a stud…i dont get why you guys love suffern and North Rockland SO much

  87. baseball watcher

    ramapo baby,
if you think that 83 is hard, you must not have played any baseball outside of little league. 83 is average at most for kids in high school. Lest you forget that Aviles is only a sophomore, and as of last year he already hit 90.

  88. baseball

hey jake you still think Bauer is claiming North is going all the way this year after lossing O’Grady?? and please dont respond to that saying” well you know who could go all the way, Suffern.”

  89. ramapo baby

    watcher,
your right but everyone is knockin the kid pretty hard hes a pretty chill kid and he hit 83 at the blue grey classic, iu got you to qwith aviles the kid is a stud and you dont find freshman that hit 90 haha hes a freak of nature

  90. NORTH

wait grossman isnt even on south?

  91. NORTH

    Grossman isnt even on South?

  92. south player

no hes not he still has to try out

  93. baller

Trongone topped regularly topped 80. he has improved in his behavior, but he still needs to proove a lot more. It the state final four he did not produce because he was supposedly injured. I was at the game in the the fnals he has to be lifted and a pitchers who had just pitched a compele game two days earlier and then caught a complete game had to pitch in 100 degree weather. He too was injured with a separated bone in his foot. but he went out here and did his job. I’m not saying he is not a nice kid he just has to prove himself. he is also not having many college looked at him if any.

  94. baseball

i was also at the state chapionship last summer when trongone started for west nyack…he was taken out in the 4th inning with his team loosing 7-3 i think it was and giordano was the pitcher who came in to get the win 8-7 after exactly 1 day rest where he threw about 95 pitches…trongone is an effective pitcher in some situations but hes not throwing 83 and he wont overpower any hitter at all

  95. former teamte

well lets see the reson wn mad it too states is becasue troangone threw 3 complete games in a span of ten days to get them there then came in relief in the reginls to win the game and do you know trongone personally, also the pitchers injusry was months before the sate game and trongones toe was shatterd im good friends with him and i saw his x ray and it was completly done im not sayin your wrong by any stretch im just sayin he is gettin looked at by colleges not alot but there is at least 3, i would alos blame that becasue he didnt go to many showcases, might i add he also pitched 8inns of 1 hit ball 3 days prior to that one

  96. Trongone

i like the heat thats bein brought on me kinda fires me up for the season hahaha

  97. Trongone

one more thing my boy jj is deff top 5

  98. baseball guy

yeah his teammate is right trongone was the main contributer to that teams pitching staff considering giordano came late to the team and trong pitched them through the districts by himself mainly…hes a hard working kid that expects out of himself and he doesnt settle for anything less than perfection this whole thing is just guna motivate him and he has a chance to become souths # 2

  99. Jake Thomases

Since when do I have a Suffern fetish? I just calls it like I sees it. When I watched Aviles during the year I came away impressed. I saw little of the two South guys because they didn’t throw that many innings. Believe me, if they’re good I’ll be out to see them plenty. Josh and I go where the best teams and players are. That’s all we care about.

bball…When I mentioned Giordano to Tom Lynch (the North Rockland coach) he immediately brought up that 6 1/3 game with a groan. So he definitely remembers the kid.

  100. bball

    Jake,

That is why when you make a comment like he pitched exactly one game over five innings you need to check you facts. The interesting fact is that Giordano was a starting catcher until sophmore year. In just two years he has shown a lot of growth and this probably has to be because of his pitching coach Avilas’s father. And that is not true about your love for Suffern.

  101. north rockland fan

I was at that game last year and I also will not forget the SOuth and NR game it was great. Neither team hit because each pitcher was on.. This was one game Jake you should have remembered.

  102. Amazing South

all you guys suck. Suffren is horrible at every sport and if Avieles want to pitch agenst south il be in the stands with shoulder pads because i know the last time south played him we were bitchin him out in basketball and the south football team made him their bitch wile he is still crying because hehasn’e beat south in one sport yet this year and why statrt now

  103. north

all the talk in this entire blog is about south and north, what about the two teams that are better than them and are going to be hard to beat. suffern and north rockland! they are the teams that are going to do something, read this entire blog over again and you’ll realize why

  104. south player

Amazing South you are a jerk. Aviles is the real thing. South does not have a chance to beat him. this isn’t football or basketball where he plays those sports for fun. This is his sport and he is the best by far.

  105. trongone

yo south player get off his knob pleaseeeeeee hes a standout yes please no one is talkin about fasano the kid walked about 2 people last year

  106. baseball guy

the South/NR game last year was prob one of the best and theres a good chance Fasano and Giordano will match up again at least once throughout the year

  107. baseball watcher

    Amazing south,
I’m sorry maybe you dont recall Suffern sweeping you guys last year? So maybe you guys bean them in basketball and football (which isnt really all that big considering suffern isn’t great at football), I’m sure he’ll show you up in baseball again.

  108. lohud

People in Rockland need to find something better to do with their time then argue about who’s the best over a month before the season starts

  109. south player

I am looking forward to north against suffern and Aviles pitching. I’d love to see North’s catcher Gitliz try to lean into a ball ane try for his patented walk and get beaned by a 90 mph ball. Everyone should throw only fast ball to him. High and inside and make him get on base with a hit. All he every does is lean into off speed pitches and get hit. It is a disgrace.

  110. people

Avilas can hit 90…yes i have been aware of that, what is he throwing consistent? 87? there were many pitchers out there last year that threw very hard, a fastball can easily be hit…everybody needs to get off the fact that he hits 90 as a sophomore, which i am not gonna lie, is amazing and a god given talent, and realize that some teams are teams that can crush the fastball

  111. south player

He has more than a fastball. The only concern is he did not pitch that much for Suffern last year. Will he develop arm problems toward the end of the season like his brother,

  112. player

Avilas has the potential to be very good. He cant just rely on his fastball. He tried this in sectionals last year against Arlington, and didn’t make it out of the first inning. Anyone can hot a fastball, you need to back that up.

  113. baseball guy

hey player…that was his brother mike that pitched against arlington not robbie…i hope u realize we have been talking bout robbie this whole time

  114. Westchester

Get a life Rockland people this is ridiculous stay off the blogs and go do something meaningful with your lives

  115. rockland baseball

    Westchester,

Maybe we are fed up with everything always being about Westchester. Just read the blogs on basketball. suffern gets an upset without two of their best players and only a small paragraph is mentioned. We are sick of everything being about Westchester, If you don’t like it you get off the bolg

  116. Baseball

    Hey Westchester
    You might have basketball
But the best baseball is played in Rockland.
    Thats a fact.

  117. trongone

i agre westchester baseball has nothing on rockland baseball

  118. baseball

all this talk about top pitchers in a rotation is garbage. one pitcher isnt going to make or break a team and a season. If anyone can get off their knees for aviles and realize high school baseball comes down to how consistent your bats are then you’ll see who the best teams are. im not making any predictions but suffern cant hit, south is going to struggle with hitting just like last year, north has a solid 13 seniors returning, north rockland always has a good hitting team… one pitcher cant throw 9 innings wake up

  119. shot caller

thats great alot of seniors are returning would you like a medal for that or something to show an achievement honestly waht does that have to do with anything that is being disscussed

  120. oberver

hey shot caller those seniors that are returning won the league last year as juniors, give them some credit. those seniors hit everyone in the league 9and 3. Darsee and Baker both D1 pichers got hit by those seniors over and over again.

  121. people

    baseball

You are making a good point, hitting is the key factor. and i do not care about what everybody else says, but i do not see south or north winning evertthing, they lost too much already

  122. baseball

I’m not saying north or south are going to win the league. Just keep in mind that just about all of the starters last year were juniors and they won the league. Clearly these kids have what it takes if they could hit D1 talent. Losing Ogrady is going to hurt but there will be kids to step up.

  123. Eastchstr

    Eastchester,

Look out 4 eastchester! They lost only 2 starting seniors last year. And they have 2 guys that will definately replace them who r just as good if not better. They still retained there 2-8 hitters in the line up this year. Still have there starting rotation 1.Sorine 2.Federico 3.Nickelitos. And still have there All-section Players—> Abatiello, Sorine. The only other teams in the Section that i know of, that have that many returning starters is Mamaroneck, and Pelham.

  124. Westchester Baseball

Rockland baseball is no good. The only good thing in Rockland is the football there! The only reason why everybody talks about Westchester ball players is because thats where the bal;l players are. Exception for a couple of guys like Giblin- Who is getting rocked in pro ball! There really is not really that many guys who even play on the good Summer Travel Teams. North Rockland gets into the state Semifinals now they are so Good! So What! westchester has teams year in and year out go that far – Hastings, and Keio, and some years Mamaroneck. Westchester is the better brand of Ball Hands down!

  125. rockland baseball

Keio is not even an American school.

  126. baseball guy

being a rockland player i do admit that westchester has more talent than rockland…but i mean of all the teams to mention you name hastings, keio, and mamaroneck? why? why wouldnt u say that one whole league with carmel, mahopac, arlington, john jay, oh and that team who is somewhat good and plays for the sectional finals damn near every year RC KETCHUM..that is a ridiculously stacked league

  127. nybb

LETS NOT FORGET FOX LANE ,

  128. some guy

How is everyone here seriously hating on north rockland? Did you guys seriously not watch that rediculous run they put on throughout the playoffs. While the rest of you were at home playing x-box 360 and reading about north rockland in the paper, they were out winning games and making it to states. They lost 2 key players in Biehl and Gizzi. Mergenthaler who? So they have 6 starters coming back, and 2 of the best pitchers in the section. They def. have the hitting and the speed to give alot of run support for their pitchers. Dont look past N.R. just yet, they might bite you in the behind again like last season.

  129. NYDB

What about North Rockland? they made it to the state final game, how could u even mention rc ketchum…north rockland blew you guys out 8—2 remember???

  130. baseball guy

hmmmm not one person is hating on north rockland? but ok…we sed that team by team Westchest is better, but if you want to take that as NR is a garbage team that is going nowhere then ok but no1 sed anything like that

  131. baseballfan

    Baseball,

  132. baseballfan

    Baseball,

I agree with you that hitting is key but Suffern is going to have a solid lineup this year, to say ” suffern cant hit” is far from the truth.

  133. Moises

who does suffren have in their lineup that makes them solid

  134. SECTION 1 FAN

    Moises
Are you kidding me? Sufferns Lineup has returning players Brennan, Tarangelo,Aquilino,Natoli, Aviles. This is the middle of the lineup.

  135. person

    Section 1 Fan
I have NO IDEA who any of those guys are, trust me dont be worried about suffern

  136. Section 1 Fan

Pelham is going to blow everyone away with their lineup. Almost the entire team is returning and they are all huge. They won 17 games last year and this year they’ll do even better. They will win their first Section championship.

  137. vaseline

listen listen fox lane is straight up a all star team i dont even live in ny and i heard about them..put it that way i have done extensive research on their players they might be undefeted … SMELL YA LATER

  138. Vaseline JR

Listen Listen, fox lane is nothing special! who do they have??? u say that u dont live in new york but u do all this research on them? of course they all look good on paper, but what good teams do they play? NOBODY!

  139. section 1

last year they played ketcham, john jay east fishkill, alrington, mamaroneck, mahopac, somers and they beat ketcham and mahopac twice and are playing them all again this year..those teams sound like real cake walks to you i guess rite?

  140. Conor Gregorian

Not only does Iona have Adami, they have Timmy Childs returning from Tommy John surgery.

  141. section 1

Hey Jake. If you and Josh go where the best teams and players are as you say, you should be spending a lot of time in Pelham this year where the field has major league dimensions, not little league like Fox Lane.

  142. pelicans

ok…that last comment had nothing to do with better players btw. The dimensions of fox lanes field are not great but don’t try and attempt to make a point saying they have no players. The only good player out of pelham with any real talent was dane clemens.

  143. baseball

Fox Lane is not that great. Last year Arlington blew them out 16 to 5. Arlington has the potential to win the section. They beat North rockland last year, Ketcham all 3 times they played them, JJEF 2 of 3, and took Mamaroneck into extra innings. They are returning many players and will have a great team.

  144. fan

    Westchester Baseball,

Hastings is over-rated and they will get spanked by any rockland team.. and Keio?? wtf?

  145. woodbat

South is hitting the cover off the ball this spring. J. Kolinsky hit the hardest ball I’ve ever seen a high school player hit last night. Over the Nanuet center fielders head.

Dan Diaz, Nanuet, infielder: Eyes turned to the junior shortstop/pitcher after his 17-strikeout virtuoso on May 2. His next start was a no-hitter, followed by a two-hit shutout. Using a biting slider and upper 80s fastball, he went 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. Over the last month he batted .550 to raise his season average to .446. His 1.258 OPS was No. 3 in the county; his ERA was No. 4. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Steve Putnick, Pearl River, utility: The graduations of Sean Giblin, Ian Reese, and Jeff Allison left Putnick, a pitcher/third baseman, as Pearl River’s one returning star. The Pirates were 6-3 in his starts; 6-9 otherwise. The senior, who will walk on at Marist, threw more innings than anyone in Rockland except Aviles. He was a table-setter in the 3-hole, reaching base nearly half the time. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Adonis Germosen, East Ramapo, infielder: The Titan bats didn’t hit like they were supposed to, with one exception. Germosen, a senior catcher, belted homers in three straight games before April was even half over ‹ the last of which Carmel coach Bob Shilling called the farthest he’s ever seen at his home field. He hit a county-high six while scoring 24 runs and driving in 20, earning a late roster spot at St. Thomas Aquinas. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Bill Smith, Nanuet, outfielder: The senior provided the legs in Nanuet’s multi-pronged attack. He swiped a base in 13 different games and led the county with 16 steals overall. Part of that was opportunity ‹ he hit over.400 with a .479 on-base percentage. Because of all his mischief on the basepaths, he scored 25 runs, third-best in Rockland. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Ron Gamma, Suffern, coach of the year: After suffering a disheartening 16-0 loss on opening day, it became a wire-to-wire season for the Mounties, who quickly established themselves as the top team in Rockland and proved it by making the Class AA sectional final. Other coaches were most impressed that Gamma negotiated his way through 12 League I-B games without a loss. He knew when to step in and when to cede decisions to his pitching coach. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Jordan Kolinsky, Clarkstown South, infielder: When the senior was shelved with an ankle injury in mid-May, Clarkstown South tumbled. The Vikings went 0-7 with their pitcher/first baseman first sidelined and then hobbled. Despite the handicap, Kolinsky managed to bat .414 with 28 RBI. As a pitcher he was carefully confusing, never throwing the same speed twice in the same at-bat. His 1.78 ERA ranked No. 2 in the county. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Jim Brennan, Suffern, outfielder: Potential had exceeded production for the center fielder. Until his junior year, when he exploded for a .467 average ‹ 200 points better than last year ‹ with a county-leading 34 runs, 10 doubles and nearly .900 slugging percentage, with 25 RBI from the leadoff spot. As Suffern’s third starter he went 5-1, including a masterful playoff performance at John Jay. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Nick Viohl, North Rockland, pitcher: North Rockland leaned heavily on senior pitchers Fasano and Viohl. Viohl delivered with a 1.67 ERA, lowest in Rockland County and eighth-lowest in the section among those with at least 30 innings. He allowed only 26 hits in 46 innings, an incredible ratio. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
Tyler Rorick, Tappan Zee, outfielder: Tappan Zee’s season was almost dead when Rorick pitched the Dutchmen to a 3-1 victory over Pearl River that revived their hopes. As they were winning 12 of 16 he hit in every game. He batted .500 over that stretch and .422 for the year. Without the senior’s clutch stick and arm, Tappan Zee would have folded. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
Joe Ferrara, Clarkstown North, utility: With Chris O’Grady out, the toughest pitching assignments fell to the senior. Even when used in relief, it was in crucial situations, allowing him to pick up decisions in 10 of 11 appearances. As a hitter he was an on-base machine (19 walks) because of a keen eye for pitches. He’ll join Germosen and Wargo at St. Thomas Aquinas. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
George Wargo, North Rockland, infielder: The preseason began with the senior in a battle to be the starting catcher. Coach Tom Lynch has to be happy with his choice after Wargo threw out 60 percent of baserunners. He thrived behind the plate, delivering a .403 average ‹ 100 points higher than last year ‹ to provide rare consistency in North Rockland’s order. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
