It’s still freezing cold out. The ground is hard. Fields haven’t been raked in months.
Clearly, it’s not quite baseball season. But that hasn’t stopped Mamaroneck from generating a little preseason buzz…
The Tigers were ranked No. 30 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, which released its preseason rankings in its magazine last Friday.
As you know, Mamaroneck was the top seed in Class AA last year after going 19-0 vs. Section 1 competition during the regular season. The Tigers lost in the opening round to Carmel, but enter this year having lost just three senior starters (Mike Mezansky, Peter Denyssenko, and John Cunningham) from that team.
I talked to Mike Chiapparelli about today, and he told me he’s already worked on trying to arrange a game against Virginia-bound Steve Proscia and Don Bosco, which was ranked No. 1 in the poll.
Mamaroneck also received an individual honor, as LHP Sean Hagan was selected as a second-team all-american. Hagan, a rising 6-foot-5 ace, went 6-0 last season with a 1.62 ERA and 48 K’s in 39 1/3 IP.

Mamaroneck is the 4th best team in Section 1 so I guess 3 other teams are nationally ranked as well?
Fascinated… Who are the other 3 ?
JJEF, Arlington, Mahopac and throw in JJCR, RCK, and North Rockland and Suffern….all will be better than Mamaroneck this year.
I’m not from Mamaroneck and you’re certainly entitled to your opinion but I respectfully disagree. They are strong throughout the lineup offensively, have very good speed, defense is more then adequate, and pitching will be better than last year.
League C, the 7 schools you put up, Mamaroneck played JJEF won,Arlington won,Mahopac ducked,JJCR, RCK, didn’t play, North rockland won, and Suffern won, and the tigers are better than last year, didn’t those schools graduate anyone? think about it
does any one know where we can see the rankings online, because collegiate baseball newspaper doesnt have the rankings up
We will see how good mamaroneck really is when they Arlington in the second game of the year.
and so who knocked Mamaroneck out in the 1st round last year????? hhhhmmmmmm????!!!
Speaking of Carmel. Have they resolved their coaching issue? There was a lot of talk that Coach Shilling would not return for the 2008 season. He did an amazing job getting them to the finals last spring.
If Coach Shilling doesnt coach because some idiot dad had a vendetta against him, that would be a damn shame. He is often one of the most overlooked great coaches in our section.
fox lane is the best team in the section…
i heard jjcr is stacked this year…id like to see them do well
Hold on i don’t know about jjcr being stacked. they will have the best young pitcher in the area on the mound. their league should be very competitive. Lakeland could suprise some people. always well coached
Here’s the pre-season list:
