Well, I certainly didn’t see this coming but I found out today that Sean Hagan has given a verbal commitment to St. John’s.
Hagan, a junior lefty on Mamaroneck, said he wanted to stay close to home and that he prefers the cold weather. (Hmmm…what???)Â He went to a basketball game a couple weeks ago, toured the school and decided to take what he considered a great offer.
I’ll have more in the paper on this tomorrow, but I just wanted to stop by with the news.

I heard from White Plains’ LHP Josh Herzenberg, who said he has committed to Oneonta.
The senior was a member of the ‘pen on the Hudson Valley team this summer. He went 2-5 with a 2.39 ERA, 55 K’s and 52 H in 52 2/3 IP as a junior for the Tigers, who won just three games.
Herzenberg had spoken to several other Division II and III schools, as well as Binghamton, but felt most comfortable at Oneonta. He’ll join Port Chester’s Frank Fiumara, who committed there in the fall.

I have a few different topic to touch on, so grab what you like:
— 3B Steve Proscia was a first-team all-America on the Collegiate Baseball News list. You can see the complete list here.
— The rankings I mentioned the other day are also posted. You can check them out here.
— I made a mistake a few months ago. I meant to post this, but it was lost in the endless pile of e-mails in my inbox.
Pelham C Zach Small decided to go to Johns Hopkins in December, when he was accepted there early decision. His coach Jack Plunkett told me Zach, who was an ESG alternate last summer, was recruited by some Division I schools. Obviously, going to college at Hopkins played a major role in swaying him to play ball there.
— Former Stepinac knuckleballer Matt Casino made the team at Iona as a walkon, and I just wanted to pass that along as well.
— Lastly, I know I know nothing about baseball according to some, but here’s my two cents on the Class AA rankings: Mamaroneck may not play in the toughest league (League I-C and I-B are definitely deeper), but the Tigers proved their superiority vs. League I-C last season. Yes they lost to Carmel when it counted, but look at this: Mamaroneck went 2-1 vs. League I-C and 2-0 vs. League I-B. It also lost just three starters, but retained its top pitcher and Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5 hitters. Can the Tigers lose in the playoffs again? Sure. But these are pre-preseason rankings. Remember that.

I forgot to mention yesterday, but Sean Hagan has already started to attract serious Division I attention, which tends to happen when you’re 6-5 and throw 90.
Hagan has exchanged e-mails with several major programs. The coach from Michigan called Mike Chiapparelli, and Hagan has unofficials to UConn and St. John’s.
Chiapparelli also told me there’s been interest from Duke, USC and UCLA. … Wow, those schools are no joke, huh?
