Mamaroneck runs past Scarsdale, 7-3

It was another close one between Scarsdale and Mamaroneck, but for the fourth time in the last two seasons the Raiders fell to the Tigers, this time 7-3.
The margin hardly seems that close, but if you were there and saw the game you’d know it was pretty tight the whole way. Scarsdale came in with a real chance here — not only had it played the Tigers tougher than anyone last year (4-2 and 6-5 losses in ‘07, including a loss in Mamaroneck’s last at-bat), but Sean Hagan was over at first and Matt McGovern was on the bench. (More on that later…)
The game was a pitcher’s duel through three, with Mamaroneck’s Andrew Benkwitt and Scarsdale’s Ben Kushner each throwing up goose eggs. The Raiders stranded runners at first and third in the second, but really that was about the only early threat until the fourth.
Mamaroneck finally solved Kushner in the fourth, beginning with Taylor Mondshein’s leadoff triple to right-center. Mike Rosenfeld was hit by a pitch, and Matt Seid walked to load the bases. The rally was there, but Kushner seemed to limit the damage when Hagan hit into a ground-ball double play. The throw to first pulled 1B Mike Morris off the bag, but Hagan was called out…originally. The umps conferred, and Hagan was put back on first. It was a key moment in a three-run inning.
Scarsdale answered with a rally of its own in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter David Wheeler drove in a run with a single, but that was as far as the Raiders went, stranding the bases loaded.
Mamaroneck scored three more runs in the fifth with two outs. The Tigers appeared to end the inning scoreless when Hagan grounded to second with runners on first and second. Mondshein, running between first and second, distracted Scarsdale 2B Marc Wolfer and the ball bounded off his body and into short right field. Mondshein hustled all the way around to score, as you can see in the photo above. “He ran his tail off,” Mike Chiapparelli said.
Scarsdale scored two more in the fifth on RBI doubles by Zach Tatti and Morris, which was the end of Benkwitt’s afternoon. So Eric Windsor came on and proceeded to escape a no-out jam with two (then three) runners on base.
Windsor was excellent, ultimately tossing three scoreless innings in relief. He made sure Scarsdale never seriously threatened.
As for McGovern — I talked to Matt after the game. Apparently, he dropped down a bunt earlier this week against New Ro and tweaked his hamstring. He sat out Wednesday’s game against Mount Vernon and today’s game, although he warmed up and said he could’ve pitched in relief. McGovern said he will see a doctor over the weekend and that he hopes to return next week, if not against John Jay-East Fishkill on Monday then by the time the Tigers travel to Don Bosco next Saturday. (On another note, McGovern saw Bosco yesterday…he said they were great.)

arlington beat mahopac 5-3 off a 3 run homer from number 44. what a hit the kid has power.
Make a call and stick with it please. There is a reason the Mamk coach comes out of the dugout after every play to argue… it is because :
A- The umps are too weak to tell him to stop coming out and making a mockery of the game. You would NEVER see a college coach come out all the time because it is ridiculous, and the umpires on the higher levels would throw him out of the game after the third time he did it. I have seen Mamk coach come out over 10 times in a game. This is not an exaggeration.
B- He might as well question every call, especially when these umps change their calls, or over-rule each other. What a joke.
god help you in the the youth leagues if you play mamaroneck…i remember coaching teams years ago and having to play at mamaaroneck…if you can believe this, they did not let the league assign umpires, like every other team did. they took care of it. and they did. some fat fools in light blue umpire gear would give all visiting teams the biggest screwing known to mankind….every time… you could not win a close game in that town ever..fix was in
I agree the Mamaroneck coach needs to settle down. I was at the Mamaroneck/Arlington game early in the year…...all he does is question calls.
I guess he needs to do that since after all they are the self proclaimed 2008 Section 1 champs. Just ask them.
Here’s a prediction for 4/26,
John Jay East Fishkill 7
Mamroneck 3
Mamaroneck has nobody left to pitch.
Bring on the Tigers…....
You heard it here first.
chap is the best coach in the section hands down- no one knows the game like he does.have you checked out some of the umps at all section 1 games—you would argue too.
Josh…kennedy [ somers ] played Irvington today and it went into the stats as kennedy { bronx]
For the record Number 44 for Arlington is Dylan Britton. Great shot to left center to win the game for Arlington. Greg Ackley pitched another stellar game for Arlington. Again another nod for pitcher of the year. Go Admirals!!!!
valhalla wins again and now is 10 and 2. they destroyed tuckahoe 14 to 1. they have to be the favorite to win class c
Ketcham has the best coach in section 1 in Mealy, sorry 1-c fan.
Coach Chiapperelli is a disgrace to the HS game of BB. Maybe you get away with that stuff 50 years ago. He taunted a Scarsdale relief pitcher acting like a monkey at third base. Get rid of this guy he is all about the wrong things.
In Southern Westchester, the best coaches are Mt. Vernons Joe Mazzella (he has NOTHING to work with anymore) and Eastchesters Dom Cecere. I don’t know about the other areas of section 1 though, I am sure there are many excellent coaches. I hear good things about Plunkett from Pelham as well.
How about Fletcher at Kennedy…Great Coach
To Stumpy and anyone else that thinks coach “chap” is a disgrace or all about the wrong things—quite simply you don’t know what you’re talking about. This is a guy that IS Mamaroneck baseball. He’s involved in the development of baseball talent in Mamaroneck from little league on up through his Varsity team, he runs WITH his team at 6am each day in the preseason, will personally THROW bp to his team, or any individual member of it, anytime anywhere (I’ve seen him throwing to players at 9pm at the mamaroneck hs cage under 2 small spotlights), is a modest yet effective leader in the local community, and he won’t think twice to bench or suspend his best players if they break any team rules. And on top of it all, he has had over 100 players that have gone on to play in college, 45 of them playing division 1, and some of them got their opportunities because of tireless work and phonecalls by chap to college coaches. If this describes a “disgrace” then we should be so fortunate as to have disgraces coaching teams all over section 1. Mamaroneck has had nothing but good teams since Chap has been coach, and it’s not a coincidence—do you think baseball players miraculously just grow on trees in mamaroneck? Chap is as hard working, dedicated, and passionate a guy as you’ll ever find, on the field, in the school district, and in the community as a whole, and he embodies everything that is RIGHT about HS baseball.
Well put, Recruiter.
To All Coach “Chap” detracters;
Recruiter is right on. I am not from Mamaroneck and have had many experiences with Coach Chap both as an umpire and as a parent of a player that has competed against his teams. No one can question his motivation, dedication. or the loyalty he has to his players. To my knowledge he receives nothing but the greatest respect from his peers and players and he has mine as well.
in my opinion…the best coaches are the ones who everyone hates to play against, but everyone wants to play for.
Coach Chap is not only a great baseball coach but a great JV football coach. For a good stretch in the mid to late 90’s he encouraged many kids to play JV football. Some who turned out to be all league/ all section players on some of the best teams Mamaroneck has ever fielded.
More important Mike Chap is a great man who helps his STUDENTS grow into great members of the community. He is what is right about high school sports.
To all other high school coaches. Follow what he does… and you may be a legand one day too.
I will remember mike chap for the rest of my life. Can every section I coach say his players will say the same… I don’t think so !!!!
PS he still plays softball on a team full of players he coached in the past. Dedication to the community…. I think so !
