Live thread — Mamaroneck vs. Don Bosco Prep

May
3

Ballgame — Bosco wins 7-0. Three-hitter for Dennhart. More later…End of six — another two-out hit for Bosco and it is 7-0. Matt McGovern pitched the sixth for Hagan, who finished with six runs (four earned), nine hits and no walks allowed.

End of five — Bosco leads 6-0. Steve Proscia led off with an infield single and scored on a sac fly in the fifth. Mamaroneck has just two hits – both doubles – and no walks against Dennhart, who is being fawned over by the various pro scouts in attendance.

End of three — Bosco got another two out single and took a 5-0 lead. Mamaroneck isn’t playing well defensively, which it had to do to win this game.

Big spot here for the Tigers, who bring the heart of their order to bat.

End of two — Bosco is up 4-0. The Ironmen had a two out single to right to score a run. Hagan pitched better that inning, but he is really up against a great team.

End of the first — It is 3-0 Bosco on two unearned runs and another that could have been prevented. Bosco had two on with one out when Steve Proscia hit a taylormade double play ball to short. Christian Glaser fielded it and tagged second but the threw wild to first and a run scored. Later, with men on second and third, a ground ball hit Hagan in the foot. Glaser fielded it but threw wild to first, scoring two.

Middle of the first — despite a deep double from from Mike Rosenfeld, Mamaroneck went scoreless in the first. Dennhart was between 88 and 92 on the scouts gun. His curve? 73.

4:38 P.M. — I talked to Chap. First of all, they made a wrong turn. Secondly, I made a mistake on the Bosco pitcher. It is not Frankel, who is No. 26 for Mamaroneck. (I looked at the wrong roster and am officially an idiot.) The starter is actually 4-0 Mike Dennhart, a senior righty headed to Boston College who can hit 93. (See, I told you he was probably good.)

Two quick notes before first pitch. 1. Bosco is a physically massive team. The biggest I have ever seen. 2. The crowd is quite large as well, probably a few hundred. Should be fun. Bosco is clearly a team with confidence to spare.

Pregame — It is a little after 3 and Mamaroneck is nowhere in sight. It appears the Tigers bus is lost. There was an accident right off Route 17 in Ramsey, causing a detour. (I was caught up too nut was able to find my way here.)

OK, as I just wrote that Mamaroneck came briskly walking past. This will be tough for them – not only was the bus lost, but some of the players took SATs this morning. This will be a quick warmup for them.

One word about the setup here at Bosco: Awesome. Dugouts, press box, grandstand along third base, bullpen, batting cage, legit outfield wall and foul poles, and a concession stand. It makes Iona Prep look rinky-dink.

It doesn’t look like Eric Pfisterer is pitching. The senior lefty headed to Duke is not warming in the pen. Instead it is Junior Max Frankel, who I don’t know anything about. You have to imagine the kid is good though, so I doubt Mamaroneck will catch much of a break.

I’m going to catch up with Chap and get back with more details.

  1. IonaPower

Don Bosco obviously has first class facilities and their sports programs speak for themselves. But the comment about the baseball facilities at Iona Prep is off base- I have been to many baseball facilities and most coaches will tell you that Iona has a great baseball facility with dugouts batting cages etc.

  2. Josh Thomson

Iona Power – that is sort what I was saying. Iona has the best facility in Westchester.

  3. ging

OK, so Mamaroneck gets shown what a real powerhouse looks like. Bosco is obviously better and their pitcher is better than Hagan. However, please please, I don't want to hear ANY excuses about S.A.T.'s or wrong turns. Please let me hear Coach say "They are better than us, the pitcher is outstanding" or something like it. Just once please.

  4. Hagan Heat?

What was Hagan throwing on the scouts radar gun?

  5. IonaPower

Mamaroneck should be applauded for playing a powerhouse program like Don Bosco- Playing these types of games will only get you better-

  6. wha?

Big deal so they scheduled a good team? How is that to be applauded? They play in a weak division, and will run the table in their division so this loss means nothing except for the fact they got smoked. Bosco scored 7 runs in 6 innings (they did not need their last at bats being the home team), Mamk offense did nothing against a D 1 pitcher except get 3 hits. Certainly does not show well for section 1 baseball when our #1 team (supposedly) can not do a thing against another good team.

  7. setup at Bosco?

bosco is without a doubt the best hs team that i have seen . but please, you must have been over excited in anticipation of the game when you wrote the comment about the bosco facilities . my impression was they were far below what you would expect for a high profile team….the backstop was like little league? a small confined cage above and around home plate. no pass balls or pops to the catcher possible? and the concession stand? two moms under a makshift party tent selling soda, candy and programs. no hot food? Iona Prep's baseball field is a better facility than don bosco's….....but both fields stink as far as being spectator friendly…

  8. Oh well

Don Bosco is one of (if not the best) in the nation. That fact that Mamk didn't get obliterated says something.

  9. Josh Thomson

The backstop is the only negative at Bosco. If you don't think that's a nice facility, you are crazy.

wha?...I hope you weren't at the game. Bosco was as good as advertised, if not better. In fact, Bosco was better than every Section 1 champ I've seen the last four years, and I didn't even get to see its co-No. 1.

Listen, I'm not on the Mamaroneck payroll or anything so there's no bias in this, but this loss was not an indication that the Tigers are overrated. Bosco is that good.

  10. wha?

7-0 is not obliterated, but it is dominated. Especially with Mamk's best pitcher on the mound.

  11. vikings

South won again beat James Monroe. They are in the championship game tomorrow.

  12. hsbaseballfan

I'm from sec 1 (not Mam) and I the first 4 1/2 innings. First off, to even attempt to compare a public school town team to a prep nationally ranked power is assinine. They doon't just have kids from several towns on that team, they have kids from several states. No question they were better. As they should be. Hagan was certainly at their level. His infield (particularly the left side) and his catcher were not.

I am quite sure that Arlington, JJCR, Ketchum, N Rockland and perhaps a few others would give Mamoroneck all they could handle particularly without Hagan on the mound. He can pitch two sectional games at best if the cards fall into place. Otherwise they are in trouble. Defensively as well as offensively, they are not impressive. I do realize that they were up against a good pitcher but they had routine plays and throws from third and home that they ave to make if they want to be a big time team. I didn't expect them to beat a stacked private school but I was definitely disapointed with their execution of routine plays.

  13. Sec 1 Fan

I was at the game today and i thought the facilities were good for what they have to work with. The infield was in pristine condition while the outfield was almost unsafe. I realize that it rained the day before which excuses the wetness, but there were many holes in the outfield. The fences were waaaay out of proportion, the backstop restricted popouts to the catcher, and there was no separation between left field and the fans. Honestly mamaroneck facilities are nicer and they are far from perfect. Another thing that really bothered me was the "pass-ball-line". It seems so childish.

One other thing. Don Bosco is an incredible team. They completely shut us down. The most noticeable difference was size. Those kids (if you can call them kids) were huge. Even Hagan didnt even compare to the shear mass of the players. There fielding was most impressive to me. So sound. So professional. They looked like a college team out there. There pitcher (sorry i dont know his name) was outstanding out there. The suffern 3rd baseman had a couple o dazzling plays. To my teams credit, there were by no means supposed to win. It wasnt as bad as i thought, we didnt not allow a xbh i beieve. They didn't really rock us but they made it impossible for us to get comfortable.

  14. infieldfly

Fordham prep played Bosco last year & lost 6-4 on a proscia 3 run homer in the 6th inn. Last years Bosco team was as strong as this years team almost the entire team is back with the exception a 17th round pick by red sox jaren mathews who is now at rutgers and a couple of other D1 players. They lost to seton hall prep who had 1st round draft pick Rick Porcello on the mound in the championship game. Seton Hell Prep was #1 in counrty last year. That Fordham Prep team from last year was pretty good

  15. teamate

clarkstown south 11 in a row HERE WE GOOOOO

  16. Fan

FYI, Fordham Prep threw their number 3 starter that game. I saw that game and Fordham gave that game away. It turns out FP had 9 D1 players on that team at the time (6 seniors, 3 juniors.) As far as Mamaroneck playing with Don Bosco … 7 – 0 with wood bats is a pretty good shalacking. The only reason it was only 7 – 0 was because of Sean Hagan. The excuse that if they didn't make an error in the first it would have been scoreless is insane. Thats why Don Bosco is better, because they make the plays. I think the game proved that Mamaroneck is not in Bosco's league. I'd like to see a Mamaroneck – Iona game.

  17. fyi

all the returning fordhanm prep d-1 players lost 2 more games yesterday at the south tournament. good teams must have good #3 starters. good teams don't try to spread their games or avoid non-league games or tournaments because they "don't have the pitching".....clarkstown south , after winning two more games yesterday against regis and james monroe, need to be recognized as a top tier team in the power rankings. all their losses were early against very good teams.

  18. Section 1

    Fan,
Please make sure you know your facts before you make bold statements like that. Hagen pitched a solid game yesterday. He may have left a few pitches up but that was it. Mamaroneck was just very off yesterday. Entering into the game, they have only let up 6 errors in the infield all season long and then they let up 5 just in yesterdays game alone. Dearwester has not let up a stolen base all season and then yesterday he let two of his throws get away from him. The fact that this team played this off and that they were still in the game for most of the game really shows how good they are but thats baseball. Teams are going to have bad days especially when they have been playing almost perfect and its unfortunete that for Mamaroneck it came yesterday because I feel it could have been a real good game if they were on.

  19. infieldfly

Fan, FYI Bosco threw there number 3 against Fordham Prep as well a pitcher who is pitching at D1 Campbell University in NC. Bosco is a legit baseball power. Proscia hit a 3 run bomb late to win it. Yes Fordham had plenty of opportunities to win it but the better team pulled it out. Fordham had some very good players as did Bosco. The field was loaded with D1 talent. I think Fordham graduated most of their better players. Bosco will be strong again next year. Schedule them if you can.

  20. Baseball admirer

South will be graduating only 3 starters. Look for this team next year. They are not afraid to invite some of the best teams to their tournament. This was to be their rebuilding year, however, they are now to be a team to look out for. South's coach always feels it is important to challenge his players.

  21. baseball73

    Section 1.

I hate to play devil's advocate but your assesment of Mamaroneck is way off. The stats you are throwing out there are against weak oppnenets so to say they are so good and they were off is ignorant. Bosco is in a different league and that is that. If they played them 20 times they wouldn't beat them. Now that doesn't take away from Mamraoneck but your expectations are off and it is not fair to the kids on Mamaroneck. In a way you are making excuses and there is no need. They played hard and weren't afraid. But to think that if they were"on" it would be a different outcome is just flat out wrong. The bat speed, fundamentals, execution, mechanics of Bosco is so much superior than Mamaroneck. Bosco is an all-star team, mamroneck isnt..so be realistic with your analysis.

  22. Fan

I was trying to compliment Hagan when I said he was the reason the score was ONLY 7 – 0. I was at the game and thought he pitched very well considering the errors. I believe Mamaroneck is a very good team I just don't think they are in Don Bosco's league. That's not a diss at Mamaroneck just a compliment to Bosco. As far as the Fordham comment I just wanted to mention that I felt the level of talent was more equal when they played Don Bosco. Fordham's number 3 went D1 as well. I was reiterating the statement by infieldfly that Fordham Prep was pretty good. Yes, they lost most of their great players. They lost to George Washington 5 – 4 yesterday.

  23. northeast elite observer

if you want to call fordham's loss to george washington a moral victory, go ahead…but then what do you call fordham's 11-4 loss to tottenville yesterday?
the team that emerged this weekend is clarkstown south…they beat guilderland in dramatic fashion in the championship of the norteast elite tournament…...guilderland beat george washington 6-2 yesterday and clarkstown south beat regis and james monroe to get to the final…..

that is a very well run tournament with all excellent teams..
.and if you want to compare hs baseball facilities you have to start with the clarkstown south. perfect infield, outfield grass like a golf course. wide margins from foul lines to dead ball lines. major league dimensions around home plate..terrific public address system with great music between innings and a coherent announcer that introduces each player when he comes to bat….the best i have seen including the aforementioned bosco and iona and mamamaroneck where i have been…never saw ketcham but heard it is great…

  24. Section 1

    baseball73,
If you would have actually read wha tI said and thought it through before jumping to conclusions then you could have just saved yourself a lot time. I never said that if Mamaroneck was on they would have been beaten Bosco, I said that it would have been a lot better game then it was. I personally believe that Don Bosco is the best high school baseball team that I have ever seen but to say that Mamaroneck only has those stats because they have been playing weak oppnents is completely out of line. Last time I checked Arlington, Clarkstown Norh, and Cenntenial weren't so shabby and yes they play in a weak leauge but they have no control over that which is why they scheduele oppnents like Arlington, Bosco, and Cenntenial. And if you have ever watched this Mamaroneck team before, then you would know exactly what I mean by how they were "off". That is no excuse what so ever about why they lost because Bosco was the flat out better team. All I was saying was that it would have been a much more exciting game if Mamaroneck the plays that they usually do 9 times out of 10 and thats it, I never even hinted that their would have been a different outcome so please think before you attack someone next time.

  25. confused

I would love to see Iona Mamaroneck, Hagan V Adami pitching mathup would make it all the more interesting

  26. bluedevils

Westchester resident here,, and yes the facilities at Clarkstown were very impressive. It's easy to see why they have good ball players. They had little leaguers playing under the lights at 10pm on Saturday night at Zuker Complex!! Awesome for those kids! That Jorden kid is a very good player. Congrats to the entire team for winning the tournament.
As for all the talk about Mamaroneck whether they are a top team or not in Westchester will be answered in a few short weeks. Their results during Section One playoffs will determine on how they should be ranked and if they are deserving of all the hype. One thing is for sure they will be stronger next year with many juniors coming back.
Good luck to all HS teams during playoffs.
