Mamaroneck holds on in a wild one

glaser.jpgI went to Davis Elementary School today for a crazy game, won 10-8 by Mamaroneck over New Rochelle.

It was an important League I-A game for both sides (hence, us doubling up on Mamaroneck), and for most of the game it looked like the Tigers would romp. They were ahead 10-0, but it certainly didn’t turn out as easy as it first seemed.

Check out my video blog on the game:

  1. A Thought

Josh I dont know if every one in the Hudson Valley wants to keep hearing about Mamoroneck. We all understand that they are very good, but this is getting quite old to me. How about spreading the love?

  2. Dutchess BB Fan

If you look at the Mamaroneck schedule they have 1-2 quality wins at best. A one run win vs. Arlington – which loses some luster given Arl's recent problems, and the win against the team from Md., but that may be suspect since the team from Md. beat an average Greeley team by only one run. Bottom line, besides the 7-0 loss to Don Bosco they have played no one. I understand it is not their fault that the league they are in is not good, but I'd have to think if they were in 1-C their record might not be as good. The question w/ a team like them , is do they have any effective starters behind their ace ? If not , I'd have to agree that you may be overrating this team. I have seen Ketcham play four 1-C games and they have some deep pitching – getting quality starts from 4 different kids. None of them have the "wow" factor of a Steve Green , but they all do a good job. We know Mahopac has good quality arms, but what makes you think this Mamaroneck will not be ripe for another premature exit come playoff time ? Do they have more than one guy ? I'd like to hear some feedback on that ?

  3. Mamk Fan

The junior Benkwitt is a very solid #2 at 5-0 with a 2.4 era, and 35 ks in 29 innings of work. Reagan, the senior is currently the #3. He is 3-0 with a 2.5 era. There bullpen is deep too. Windsor, Gruppo, and McGovern have all been lights out pretty much.

  4. Just a question ??

I have seen a handful of games mostly in the Class AA, I have a question, are there any good umpires out there. I'm sure there are I just haven't seen them yet. I have heard from others who agree with me. I have seen a coach go on the field and question every close call, thats ridiculous. I don't care what the call was no umpire should let that happen.

  5. Baseball Notes

I think that the Don Bosco Mam'k game put the national rankings into perspective. I think that yesterdays New Ro game added some more.

    1) With Hagan on the mound Mam'k will be very tough for any Section 1 team to beat.
    2) Without Hagan on the mound there are a hand full of teams that will have a good chance of beating them.
    3) With that being said, lets hear about some of the other teams, I am a little Mam'k out to say the least.

  6. Section 1

For all of the Mamk haters out there, lets please not get over our heads. Just because Mamk lost to the number ONE team in the nation does not mean that all of the league 1-C teams are all of a sudden better then them now. Everyone who has seen Mamk play knows who legit they really are. They completly dominated yesterdays game from the first pitch. New Ro couldnt even touch Bankwitt and Mamk came out absolutly stroking the ball to all fields. Mamk was dominating the game so much that they even stopped stealing on pass balls by the 5th inning. It wasn't until the 6th in which Chap pulled out every single starter and put in players that havn't even seen the field all year. He did this to respect the other team by not running up the score and padding his kids stats but New Ro decided to shove it back in his face and leave their starters in and score 7 runs against 9 players who havn't touched the field all season. And if you don't want to hear me tell you about it then ask Josh, he was there. So lets really not get out of line here by saying Mamk is overrated just because they lost to the number one team in the nation and because New Ro scored 7 runs against their third string in the last inning. Mamk has proved themselves in everyway and has still not lost a regular season Section 1 game in over 2 years in which they have played teams from all around the Section. Until proven otherwise, Mamk is still and has every right to be number 1.

  7. Great Kazoo

I also agree that Mamaroneck is over-rated. I don't care about the new ro game. However, how can you be mad at New Ro for not pulling starters when they are down by 9? About 4 years ago, New Rochelle was losing to White Plains 11-0 in the 7th inning and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win. Like Yogi said, It aint over till its over. Is it anyones fault that the Mamk coach overestimated his backups in thinking that they can hold a 9 run lead in the 7th inning? Embarassing that he hit the panic button and pulled his backups out when it was only 10-4, I guess a 6 run lead in the 7th was not enough.
I also agree that all this Mamaroneck press is ridiculous. This is the same team basically that lost to an outbracket team in the first round last year, yet you believe the hype that the staff gives you, and write every story about them…. even follow them to Jerssey. Geez, when JJEF beats Mamaroneck I hope you don't say it was an upset because there are about 4-5 teams that have a great shot at beating Mamk with or without Hagaon on the mound.

  8. hsbaseballfan

    I agree with Kazoo

  9. Section 1

Yea well Kazoo in case you forgot this "same" Mamk team beat your JJEF team last year, and when they're ranked 18th in the country, ill agree with you. And to add on to what you said, I actually congratulate the Mamk starters on being able to come in cold off the bench and being able to finish the game out with the bases loaded and nobody out. It just shows another strength that Mamk has in their arsenal.

  10. ??

When Mamaroneck starts playing real teams consistently then I will give them some respect. Right now I think they're overrated just because they aren't playing the best competition. Where were they in the Clarkstown South Elite tourney? They would have won the one game Hagan pitched and thats it. I don't know they have to prove me wrong.

  11. vt

With Mamks weak schedule it is easy for them to spot their weak pitchers against the weak competition in their league and save Hagan for the tougher teams. If they were in 1-c no way they would be able to do that. Those teams play a tough team every single day… there are no gimme games in that league.

  12. bb

The players on the bench should always be ready to play and are also athletes. To say that they never see the field is wrong. They had to make the team. It is not like bench players in little league who are only playing because their parents need babysitters. If Mam is that good they should have been able to stay competitive with New Ro with their subs.

  13. harrisonhusky

Rumor has it that Mamaroneck has the #1 Freshman team in the country. Is this the case, or just a rumor?

  14. Baseball Notes

Lets reserve thw Mam'k banter for when they win a playoff game then we can write feature articles at that time. Or maybe never!

  15. bluedevils

... the game ended on a double play with a line drive being hit to the second baseman who in turn threw to first to double up the base runner.. I call that being fortunate to escape an embarassing loss to an average team.. to bad New Ro's top pitcher doesn't get to pitch against Mam'k. That is what many coaches are doing, other coaches do not throw their #1 so that they can save him for another team in their division that they have a better shot of winning the game, rather then facing Mam'k.. To coaches I say go with your best against the best, if Mam'k is the best.
It'll be an interesting section 1 tournament.

  16. Mamk

New Ro's number one pitcher pitched against mamaroneck today and they lit him up final score was 11-4

    Section 1:

I have seen Mamaroneck play several times and I am not sure what you mean by the statement"anyone who has seen them knows how legit they are" Out of curiousity how are you truly assessing this? This is not to be arguementative, I jsut want to see why from a fan's perspective. I do feel they are a solid HS team, but the praise they seem to be getting is a little blown out of proportion. There are quite a few holes in this team. I have been involved in coaching, scouting and recruting, so my views may be different…

    Sect 1

I have seen Mamaroneck play several times and I am not sure what you mean by the statement"anyone who has seen them knows how legit they are" I am not not trying to be arguementative, but I am curious as to how you are assessing this? I think they are a solid HS team, but the press they get is blown out of proportion. Coming from a coaching, scouting and recruting perspective I see quite a few holes with this team, so I really would like to hear what a fan's analysis is

    Sec 1

I have seen Mamaroneck play several times so I am not sure waht you mean by the statement"anyone who has seen them knows how legit they are" I am not trying to be arguementative, but can you explain? I think they are a solid team, but the press they get is in fact blown out of proportion. Coming from a coaching, recruting and scouting background, I see many holes in this team, so I am curious to hear why they are so good from a fan's perspective.
