Rockland's game of the year (so far)
-
- May
- 12
There are significant games on the schedule today, including Nanuet and Hastings vying for League III-C supremacy, hot Eastchester hosting Rye, and Kennedy traveling to Putnam Valley. But the best show unequivally takes place in the Section 1 outpost of Suffern, where Clarkstown South invades at 4:15 p.m.
South is the winner of 12 straight but still trails Suffern in League I-B. One reason is that the Mounties, who are playing great ball themselves, already beat South once in the early season. That win seems forever ago, especially because South is a different team. Neither team has played in days, which may favor Suffern because it slows South’s momentum.
What it definitely does is ensure a battle of ace pitchers. South coach Rich Wirchansky confirmed to me that Jordan Kolinsky would likely be starting, barring protest by his assistant coaches. Never heard back from Suffern’s Ron Gamma, but I can’t see him using anyone but Robbie Aviles. Aviles has pitched about twice as many innings as any teammate, so Gamma hasn’t been shy about using him whenever possible.
Neither club will see a bigger regular-season game this season. Expect them to fire every bullet in their guns.
How does everyone think this is going to turn out?

March 2003. He began working for the Gannett weeklies during the winter of
2002 as a freelance writer. He joined the daily staff soon after and has
since covered various high school and pro sports. Away from sportswriting,
Josh lives in Westchester and spends his free time either with his
fiancee, Sarah, or expertly managing his various championship-winning
fantasy sports teams. He's visited 21 major-league baseball stadiums and
insists that Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are the best by far. Josh
graduated from Carmel High School in 1998, then went to Boston University,
where, in 2002, he received a degree in communications with a minor in
history.
Jake Thomases has covered baseball, hockey, girls basketball, and girls soccer for the Journal News since arriving in 2003. He previously interned at The Poughkeepsie Journal while attending Vassar College. He is socking money away under his mattress to buy the Knicks, at which time he will trade Jerome James to Cleveland for a ham sandwich.

This game will probably be rained out which will change the pitching matchup. If Avilas can't pitch when the game is rescheduled then I think that South will win. They have a deeper pitching staff.
Danny Diaz pitched a no hitter vs Hastings for Nanuet. He has only given up one hit in his last 14 innings pitched with 27 K's
dominating performance by Diaz
avilas had no hitter going until last inning
final was 5-2
