Two measuring stick games highlight the day’s action. At John Jay, the Indians get their biggest challenge of the season in Somers, a one-time top 10 team. The Tuskers were really scuffling after a sweep to Fox Lane but appear to have, if not righted the ship, at least stopped it from taking on water. They’re a legit threat to John Jay, which has sorely lacked for one all year. This is John Jay’s chance to show it can beat good pitching as well as bad.
Nanuet invades Kennedy in what the Golden Knights hope is a Class B finals preview. Kennedy has distanced itself from the field. Nanuet is slowly emerging from a crowded B second tier with seven wins and counting, including two over Hastings. Should Nanuet shock the Gaels on their field it would suddenly become the top challenger and a team Kennedy has to keep an eye on.

South is in trouble Kolinsky is hurt and did not play yesterday or today against NR.
Just wait John Jay will show all you people who didn't think they were the real deal today when they annihilate Somers. You'll all see…..GO JAY!!
John Jay has no idea whats coming. Somers has played on normal sized fields all year and will put up some runs in that little league field at Jay. Green is overrated and just hasn't faced a decent team yet.
Section 1-
After Green gives up 2 runs or less to this Somers team I will be looking for, "I am sorry, Green is a Stud"
Hopefully Somers will throw the Nova kid.
JJ still has to hit the ball and pitch the ball just like all the teams they played…on the same feild. If its so easy to hit a HR…why don't other teams hit them?
They will certaoinly get their chance today.
Who will Somers throw, the Nova guy?
They will certainly get their chance today.
Who will Somers throw, the Nova guy?
Anyone know Kolinsky's status. I know that he had Tommy John surgery and missed most of last year. Is that the injury?
Kolinsky's arm is fine. He sprained his ankle against North Rockland and did not play yesterday.
I saw him holding his shoulder the other day. Maybe that is the problem.
JJ/Somers called after 4 due to field conditions. JJ was up 2-1.
kennedy and nanuet got called after the 1st inning
1st inning? Wow! Where was the game?
the game was at kennedy….it absolutely down poured for a gd 5 minutes then turned to light rain for about another 5 minutes and then started pouring again the first and third base lines were nearly underwater
green didn't pitch in the jj/somers game
Anyone know the score of the No. Rock vs. Clark. So. game?
Is it true that Green has a sore shoulder? Spoke to an umpire who mentioned this along with that fact he balked 3X in one of the last games he pitched. What's the deal? Will he pitch vs Mahopac?
he balked once, maybe twice. i heard the same about his shoulder, hopefully he returns soon
Lou Ricci pitched for JJ against Dan Zlotnick for Somers. Both pitched well it was 2-1 JJ in the 5th when the game was called.
North rockland 8 South 0.
They got the whole game in? So much for South being the real deal.
Too bad JJ couldn't get that game in. They threw out there 4th pitcher against Somers first and were doing well.
how does south beat all these ranked teams in their tournament——i have seen them beat NYC powerhouse clubs, and not be able to win in their own league? what is going on here?
If NR beat South then Suffern wins League Championship
south is dealing with injuries to key players who are tyring to play through them.
before the season nobody expected anything out of south..they were deffinately not picked to win their league..they have gone above everyones expectations so dont try and say they arent the real deal because they were not suppose to win this many games anyway
South is only starting 3 seniors of only one that started last year. They are a young team going through many growing pains. they will have there ups and downs. Many picked them to finish 4 and north who was returning almost everyone to challenge the lead. Why doesn't anyone say anything about north choking. south lost J.J. for almost 2 weeks and now Jordan for who knows how long. For them to still play well is a testament to the heart and the cohesivness on the team. My son is on the team and says that J.J. is such a positive role model to the younger players even when he was unable to play. They are also dealing with a father who is stalking them at away games and rooting against them. They have done more than anyone expected.
Sounds like South has problems with parents and injuries to key players. Hopefully the kids can play through them and re-gain some momentum. Otherwise, they will have a disappointing end to their season.
With all the injuries south is getting, maybe that father who let his kid quit should be spend more time kicking his son in the _ss than following the team and rooting against them. If the kid kept himself ready to play instead of sulking he may have seen more time with the injuries.
Zlotnick vs Ricci #1 pitcher vs Reliever with no varsity starts score after 4+ 2-1 how about that??
BB
South has been a nice story thus far being they are a young squad. I played with the coach for many years so I follow them. Injuries are a legitimate excuse for ups and downs when it comes to HS basball. But out of curiousity what would 1 dad rooting against them have to do with their play? From an outsider looking in, it seems like you are looking for excuses when they lose. If 1 dad has that much impact on them they are in trouble. Also why would someone attack North for "chocking"? Not sure I got your point? The focus should be on South, not what others do.
Briarcliff sophmore Joe Lombardi was 4 for 4 with a 2 run bomb vs. Croton while pitching a shutout into the 7th inning.
Baseball guy and BB,
Your point exactly. They are NOT even close to the real deal because they were not supposed to win these games and theyre NOT winning these games so stop trying to hype up your own team and make excusses about how you are losing. When a "real deal" team loses, they take it and they leave it and then they move on because they know theyre better then that. They don't need to make rediculous excusses.
hsbball fan
The starting rotation was established before anyone threw a pitch this year. Unfortunately, it took an injury for the kid to get his chance. And in the biggest game of the year to date at that. Shouldn't be a huge surprise though, he is the main reliever and has a .5 ERA over the innings he has pitched. What this game did show though was the depth of the JJ staff. Hopefully Green's injury is just soreness and he'll be back in time to lead us to a section championship.
Oh yeah when Ketchum loses they really take it.
South split with North Rockland this week. They beat Fasano who everyone says is the best in Rockland he gave up 7 runs and North Rockland lost twice to North who South beat so don't call North Rockland the real deal either.
While SOuth is Scheduled to play Mamaroneck this weekend North will play Pearl River. Which team is not afraid to play anyone and is willing to take a lose to improve and not take the easy way out. North also played Albertus and is only playing 21 games this year with these two not counting. Seems they are not the real deal either. Suffern is the only real deal,
S1
I agree with some of your points but I am not sure "taking it" is what true winning teams do. When a loss takes place, they should analyze the game and see where their flaws were and then look to improve upon that in practice. Losing should never be look at as ok. and you should NEVER make excuses! It should be a looked at as a learning experince and what do we need to do to grow from it.
It is bad enough that the father is stalking the team at away games. He is screaming at them and degrading them while they are at bat all the time being right by the dugout. He thinks he is funny and should be watched. HE is not stable and neither is his kid. South wins 12 in a row and it is no big deal they lose three and all of the sudden they suck. They had to be good to beat those real teams that were state ranked and not teams like Nanuet, Albertus, TZ or Nyack
Viking1
Why wouldn't other fathers say something to him? I am a dad and if someone was degrating my child like, I sure as hell wouldnt allow that. This is still not an excuse that should be made when your team loses. Lose with pride dont blame. Also I didn't notice anyone saying they suck. BB was making excuses for their losses, that prompted people like myself to respond. South has had a good run, but all that really matters is waht they do in the section. If they do well there, you will have the last laugh
Why don't they toss him?
i hope Green can be back for sectionals….i hope the jj coachs dont try and rush him hes got a bright future that kid…
Why doesn't the AD get involved and ban him?
I talked to John Jay coach Geoff Curtis on Wednesday night and he told me Green did experience soreness. He said he may return as soon as Saturday (Mahopac tourney), or possibly during one of the Indians' important league games next week.
Ditto on Green. On the bright side for Jay at least they have depth on their staff although it's true Green would be hard to replace. Hopefully he will be alright.
80% chance Green is done for the year
I'm sure Green will back on the mound if JJCR should face Peekskill or Yonkers
I'd like to see him face you Bball fan. If you could stay in the box that is.
Hopefully your wrong Paul C. I think it's just soreness.
I am sure Bball would stay in the box when that 90mph zips by his chin but his diapers would definitely be soaked.
Last game against Scarsdale he was hitting 89 most of the game and hit 91 a couple times. Tough call for coach but more importantly his family to throw him back out there unless he is 120% sure the arm is ok. Remember he is only a soph and no reason to rush him. THis is not a kid who's baseball life will end in HS. His will end in the Pro's.
Paul C
I agree 100% that under no circumstance should he rush back if he has an arm issue. Even at his age a small injury can turn into a severe situation. Now how do you know he is hitting 89 consistently? Were there scouts there tracking this. I have asked a few people about him and I have not heard he is popping this high. I am just curious where you are getting this info from. Saying he is going to be a "pro" is a bold statement and shouldn't be thrown around without fact.
I have a friend who is scout (by no means a major scout) His responsibilities are the Eastern schools, both HS and college. He has said to me, "Believe me every major league team knows who Green is and they are all watching his progress."
The Scarsdale team had a gun at the game and the reports are coming directly from them. Josh Thomson could easily call the Scarsdale coach to verify this. Keep in mind there are not a ton of Soph lefty's hitting 91 mph with very good control. In two years he is striking out almost 2 an inning.
He will be a Pro, that I can assure. Of course, this is as long as he stays healthly.
out of curiosity, I am going to look into this. From what I have heard he is not hitting 89 consistently. There is also questions about his size and strength. The strike outs are impressive but it doesnt matter when it comes to an overall analysis of a prospect. The competition and hitters he is facing is what truly matters. Josh can check into this but unless a scout is there, I am not going to side with a gun being used by Scarsdale. Over the summer into next year if he is in fact throwing this hard from the left side, he will be a national prospect.
There is also a distinct difference between getting drafted and being a "pro". If you can gurantee he is going to be an actual pro that is pretty impressive. I dont want to take anything away from this kid, but you are setting the bar pretty high for him. I hope for his sake he gets healthy and becomes a great pitcher.
Paul C why would you predict an 80% chance green does not return if the coach said he may even be ready by saturday? i think this injury is a lot less significant than you are making it out to be
Paul C
Dude, you need a hobby. I have seen Green, he is low 80's 84 tops…yes he is talented and yes he is young. How about you just let him be a High School Baseball player for now. You dont know what your talking about.
" I have a friend who is scout (by no means a major scout)" what does that mean? a minor major scout.
Take one step at a time, let him enjoy being a kid/high school player and then hopefully get an education out of his abilities. He has to overcome his size issue, and if he is having arm issues at this point(which isnt a good thing) the last thing he needs is some over zealous dope broadcasting it.
I said he was throwing 89 during the Scarsdale game I am not sure about the rest of his starts. I will say he gets drafted and your right drafted and being on the major league roster is a huge step and that I wouldn't guarantee.
JJ-
Only reason I say 80% is because of his family being overly cautious (for the right reasons) and not due to the severity of the injury. His family has been careful with him since he was very young. That I have witnessed first hand and again for all the right reasons.
Fast ball.
Clearly no HS kids are coming on this site. ITs just parents and fans of HS sports. Listen when Greeen has a 3 &2 count he is not saying to himself "I better strikeout this kid out because that last comments on the gannet blog by Paul C said I am going pro."
There are different levels of scouts your top scouts that are traveling all of the country and to country's such as Mexico to review talent and make talent reviews to the Cashmans of the world and then scouts that are just looking at local talent of HS and college kids within there region. This is a fact. He is not throwing 84. Asking and HS coach he has faced.
Paul C
Hitting 89 once in a game is not what scouts are looking for. If thats what they wanted they would go down to any shore boardwalk stand by the baseball throwing game, see what the contestants clock and sign people!
Consistency is extremely important. Is there any reason why your scout friend didn't have a gun? I also 100% disagree with the "every MLB team knows him" That is just flat out wrong. Whether players read this or not, you shouldn't be making statements that are outrageous and untrue.
I don't mean to be arguementative at all. Your comments have sparked conversation. THe bottom line is when the time comes if all you say is true, in two years he will either be getting a scholarship to a great program or he will be getting a call on draft day. Which is a win win.
Paul C
Stop it! Your not helping, its not a question of what he is doing in high school games. Its physics, size, arm, speed, torque, release point, differential on the speed of the breaking pitch and how tight the break is. Not to mention arm angle and where the strike out are coming from. Believe me I have spoken to more than a few people on the subject. Let him develope, pressure to throw hard is not a good thing and neither is the strikeouts which add up to more pitches.
When you talk about draft you really make a fool out of yourself. If he has grades to play in college that will likely reduce the likelihood of being drafted because ultimately it will cost more money to draft him and at his size its a big risk. Lets hope your right and after college we can circle back. High school coaches(very few) know 84 from 48. Let him work on location an less reliance on breaking pitches for strikeouts, that will cure the soreness.
SG does not rely on breaking pitches at all. And he is consistently in the high 80's. And to be honest, it doesn' look like he's working very hard to get there. He's not that small either 5'10" def, 5'11" maybe and he is only in 10th grade.
Paul,
I don't doubt his parents being very cautious with him, its understandable as I've seen him play for a while now, and he has great, great stuff. But, I also find the fact that you say they have been protective of his arm since he was young almost humorous because I have first hand seen him be abused in summer ball. I can't remember off hand but i believe he threw something like 130-140 pitches one day, then the next day the coach put him in the last one or two innings of a meaningless weekend, 6 team tournament, championship game to close it out (i don't remember exactly but i believe these numbers are about right). I would not doubt abuse like this, that I bet he has been subject to his entire life, could effect him negatively as his body becomes more vulnerable to injuries.
So basically, is it true that his parents have protected his arm all these years, or are they just getting the picture now that the kid has some real potential and realize that he just isn't japanese…?
Steve Green is for real. Lefty…mid to high 80's consistantly…excellent control…no emotion on the mound…even if he was 5'6" as a sophmore(which he isn't)...he still is a legitimate prospect for anyone…at least until he stops growing and/or improving…
The only question is how hard he is willing to work…and staying healthy. I am not saying he doesn't or won't work hard…knowing the Greens for a short time, I am sure he will…
Oh! and did I mention…he is a LEFTY!
I witnessed, first-hand, the number of scouts clamouring to watch him and find out about him…during last summer/fall on his Travel Team. At that time, he was consistantly hitting 86-87MPH on the scouts' gun…at 15 years old.
The most telling thing about Steve Green was that when got men on base…his gun readings would go up 1-2MPH to the higher 80's…without losing his control…at 15 years old…you cannot teach that…that is part of his make-up…
On the Taconic Rangers he dominated some of the best 17-18 year old talent in the Northeast…on a team that has some of the best pitchers around, he stood out and become the #1…
I don't know about every MLB Scout…but it is a FACT that every college/pro scout that has seen him knows him and will be watching him this summer…I have know doubt that word has spread within the scouting ranks…
I am sure he will lose a game or two…have a bad day…and some will seize upon that…these people are either jealous or do not have a clue about the game of baseball.
This is a special talent…if you are a student of the game…you could see this easily…if you haven't seen him pitch…don't say/write anything that you might have to take back late.
Most importantly…the Greens are very good people…and Steven is a gentleman…he is EASY TO ROOT FOR…this is not always the case with many of the parents of talented ball-players…many of them could take a lesson from the Greens…be quiet and let your son play baseball…make it easy for everyone to root for your son…
My son does not go to JJ…we are not in his league…and he is the one pitcher in SECTION 1 you do not want to face in an elimination game…but I enjoy watching him throw…
Good luck Steve! Looking forward rooting for you, this summer!
PROTECT THAT ARM…NO MATTER WHAT!!!
anybody with any baseball sense can easily see the best pitcher in the section, state, and tri state area and that includes denhardt from don bosco is ROB AVILES from suffern there are a lot of good pitchers but bottom line is he is the #1 PROSPECT on all of the scouts lists
After last night and what happened to Souths field now do you think they have some distractions to deal with. Everyone knows the police are not going to do any investigating and are just going to file it away.
Observer or Fast ball any comments about Cheap Seats comments? Oh nothing to say?
CHEAP SEATS- WELL SAID AND SOMEONE WHO CAN VERIFY MY COMMENTS ABOUT SCOUTS. CHEAP SEATS DO YOU KNOW WHAT GREEN'S ERA AND #'S WERE FOR THE TACONIC RANGERS??
Observer-THIS I CAN TELL YOU NEVER HAPPENED.
I can't remember off hand but i believe he threw something like 130-140 pitches one day, then the next day the coach put him in the last one or two innings of a meaningless weekend, 6 team tournament, championship game to close it out (i don't remember exactly but i believe these numbers are about right).
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING SINCE HE WAS PLAYING LITTLE LEAGUE IN BREWSTER. THIS IS A KID WHO'S DAD DIDN'T LET HIM THROW A CURVE UNTIL HE WAS 14. THE YEAR HIS BREWSTER TEAM WON THE NY STATE TITLE IN 7TH GRADE THE RULE WAS IF YOU PITCHED 3 OR MORE INNINGS YOU WOULD BE ALLOWED TO PITCH ONE INNING AFTER 3 GAMES/DAYS REST. BUT IF GREEN PITCHED HE WAS ONLY ALLOWED TO PITCH EVERY 6 DAYS. AT TIMES IN IMPORTANT GAMES (FOR THE COACH) WITH SAY GUYS ON 2ND AND 3RD WITH TWO OUT THEY WANTED TO PUT GREEN IN FOR ONE BATTER BUT THE PARENTS WOULD NOT ALLOW IT. SO TO SAY HE PITCH 140 PITCHES AND THEN PITCHED THE NEXT DAY IN A MEANINGLESS GAME IS COMPLETELY INACCURATE!!!!!
Paul C.
No, Observer had it right. I'm not sure about the 130-140 pitch number but I was at the same tournament and the kid definitely threw 100+ one day and then the next came on in relief to close the following day.
I sat in disbelief as he took the mound the second day.
Bottom line is that many of these H.S. + travel coaches do over work their pitchers and need to be reined in by someone. Also, certainly no emphasis should ever be placed on winning some stupid tournament , by over working a kid when the winner will be forgotten by the time you drive out of the parking lot.
Unfortunately , the health of these kids , in some cases rests with coaches who do not have a clue which puts them at risk.
Green is definitely the best young pitcher I have seen and I don't like hearing that he may be hurt. I hope he is allowed the time to heal before going back out there.
Don't know what his ERA was last summer…I would be shocked if it was over 1.50.
Taconic Rangers coaches protect the arms, period. They obviously want to win…and do. But they rotate pitchers in and out in order to 'showcase' as many as possible. I once watched SG get taken out of a no-hitter after four(4) innings…the scouts saw what they needed to…and the next pitcher came in and showed his stuff…this was a semi-final game vs. a top-tier Travel Program…the Rangers still won, SG was on the map, and another High School ballplayer pitched in front of a dozen scouts…that is the Taconic Rangers' philosophy.
My son pitches for the 14U Taconic Rangers. The boys have not been allowed to throw curve balls. As the coach explains, besides the stress on the arm, he wants them to learn how to pitch with location and change of speeds.
They also stress pitch counts…the pitchers learn to be economical with their pithces…they are not obsessed with K's…they are obsessed with getting people out no BB's.
They still win, but imagine when those boys are older…they know how to pitch…and they learn the curve or slider.
Steve Green is in very good hands with the Taconic Rangers program…can't speak positively or negatively about the High School program.
I know sg's father…He's in good hands.Nobody gets over on him.and a nice guy (unless you mess with his kid)
TOPPS,
YOU SAID YOU KNOW SG'S FATHER DO YOU THINK THERE IS ANY WAY HIS DAD WOULD ALLOW HIM TO THROW 140 PITCHES IN ONE GAME LET ALONE COME IN THE DAY DAY. FROM WHAT I KNOW OF HIS DAD HE WOULD HAVE WALKED ONTO THE MOUND HIMSELF TO PULL HIS SON OUT. HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PROTECTIVE OF HIS SON FOR GOOD REASONS AND HE KNOWS THE GAME VERY WELL.
FOR ALL OF YOU DOUBTER'S OF GREEN YOU JUST HAVEN'T SEEN THIS KID PITCH OR YOU JUST CAN'T SEE THE OBVIOUS POTENTIAL THIS KID HAS.
I have known his father for 15 years. I too was at the tournament in Branford CT when this happened. My son also was around for the 10U BLL Championship. Give it a rest Paul C. I also know his dad did not let him play for one summer team where he would only pitch. He had played with about 4 different teams (Brewster, Royals, CT Crush, CT Rangers, taconic) so that he could play the OF and hit during the same tournaments he would pitch. Steve has been on quite a few teams before Taconic.
This is meant to in no way discredit his talent. Steve is an exceptional pitcher wit a tremendous future. His dad was also a college pitcher. He was also the pitching coach at JJCR until the coaches couldn't take the parents anymore and the staff resigned. Paul C you should know all of this already, right?
I am very close to a ML scout and yes they all know who he is, he's just too young to worry about now. This June's draft is for the kids graduating hs in 2008, and college jr's and sr's. It's 2 years removed for Steve since he will graduate in 2010.
Triplecrown not sure why your getting on Paul C. From what I read all along he has only said three things.
1. He thinks he will get drafted one day. He never said it was going to happen tomorrow. Just he thinks one day it will happen
2. He said their were scouts that knew who he was. THis you have clarifed. Other people on the blog said that was false
3. His dad knows the game and is very protective of Steve
STEVE,
VERY WELL PUT! OK KILL ME I AM A FAN OF SGREEN AND HE THINK HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE DRAFTED. I LIKE MY CHANCES WITH A LEFTY KID WHO THROWS 86-91 UNDER CONTROL.
TRIPLECROWN YOU HAVE VALIDATED MY POINT WHICH EVERYONE KILLS ME FOR AND THAT IS THAT SCOUTS KNOW WHO HE IS AND AT LEAST HAVE AN EYE ON HIM.
I AM DONE WITH MY COMMENTS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS UNTIL GREEN IS DRAFTED!!
THE END!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know who Steve Green is. I know who is dad is. I know many players in the area and some have been invited to the Area Code tryouts and East Coast Pro tryouts. These events are for high school jr's and are run by MLB.
Paul C you are validated. He also doesn't throw as hard as what you say but does throw extremely well. He will get better as he gets stronger.
all i can say is steve is pretty talented to have 67 posts written on him. yowzas
yeah talk about the rangers they got st least 4 or 5 pitchers older than green and none are being talked about. LOL there is more ro the world than SG
After watching the game today between Rye County Day and Hackley the conclusion was made that the wildcats are at a disadvantage due to the fact of playing in the NYSAISAA league with the wood bat enforcement, during the regular games the wildcats are using aluminum and in the playoffs..(NYSAISAA) are forced to use wood…the city schools which use wood during the regular season are at big advantage swing that lumber all season…some may say it’s the safety factor. And that’s a good argument, but the wildcat’s 18-2 record was accomplished mainly swing the aluminum bats just like the DH rule in the MLB… the Highest seeded team in the bracket should be able to use the home field bat In the case of the wildcats aluminum…because .that’s what got them there and the weight of the aluminum to wood most players cant get the timing down……..the league has to be more consistence all the team must be on the same page. Maybe the wildcats should move into the Class B or C schools leagues …the next time the kids will used wood bats will be in the minor league…great season boys.
Paul C or anyone for that matter. Can you please post when Green's next start will be?
Plain and simple facts are very talented, bright future throws 81-83 all else is exageration…downside is… not very big and with that arm injury concerns will loom.
81-83?..have u ever even seen the kid pitch? seen him multiple times he's in the mid-high 80's for sure
How do these people come up with these gun reading? Does anyone carry a radar with them regularly or again is this just guess work?
Steve your three points are not exactly what Paul said. If that was the case, there wouldn't have been all these responses.
Paul C said he will be a PRO. That is much different from just getting drafted. With your second point, Paul C didn't just say there were scouts who knew who he was he said EVERY major league team knows who he is. This is also untrue. In terms of your third point, I do agree and that is a great thing.
