Heat plays havoc with the schedule

Boy was it brutal today. Temperatures nearly hit 100, the air was thick and humid, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky to block an angry sun. Pace University, where I was, didn’t have a stick of shade anywhere around the field except for a tiny patch way out beyond centerfield. I can see why Section 9 would want to keep its players out of that.
That being said, everyone probably could have played today. It would have been miserably uncomfortable, but it was possible. Somers and Cornwall played and nobody died of heat stroke. A one-day delay wouldn’t be a big deal, except Tuesday is supposed to be as miserable as today. Which could mean another delay until Wednesday when the heat finally breaks. Kennedy and Keio would have to play Wednesday, Thursday, and a doubleheader Saturday. Tough to win a state title like that.
We still don’t know what the plan is for tomorrow. The school and sectional administrators will decide tomorrow if conditions are playable. If so, Kennedy will be at SUNY New Paltz against Marlboro, Keio will be at Rye Neck against Millbrook, and Mamaroneck will be at Pace against Minisink Valley. All games would be at 5 p.m. There are also alternative plans if they decide to play when the sun goes down. Keio could move to Lakeland and Mamaroneck to Clarkstown South. Both fields have lights. Not sure what Kennedy’s backup is, if it has one.
But again, all of this should be written in pencil. It’s all very tentative. When the decision is made tomorrow I’ll post it immediately on the blog. Check back often in the late morning/early afternoon.
