Keio kicks off its Class C regional final in about 10 minutes. Kennedy will start an hour later. I’ll be watching the Gaels while colleague Matt Ng covers Keio. We’ll be sending in regular updates from our games. Check back over the next few hours as we tell you what’s going on.

3:35—Keio trails 1-0 after two innings.

4:00—Keio scored two in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

4:40—Kennedy took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Joe Santangelo’s RBI double.

4:50—Keio puts up a five-spot in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. Kenta Miyoshi is working on a complete game.

4:52—Oyster Bay used a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the third to go up 2-1.

FINAL KEIO WINS 7-1. Here are the details:

Keio’s Kenta Miyoshi pitched a two-hitter in the Unicorns’ 7-1 win over Section 11’s Port Jefferson today in a Class C baseball regional final.
This is the second consecutive year Keio has reached the state final four. Last year it lost in the final.
Kadu Matsuda had a two-run single in the seventh that extended Keio’s lead from 2-1 to 4-1.
Miyoshi’s RBI single gave Keio a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. He had six strikeouts and only one walk, and Port Jefferson’s run was unearned.

AND MORE GOOD NEWS FROM KENNEDY…

5:30—Joe Rock hit a grand slam and Luis Gonzalez hit a three-run homer as Kennedy scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-2 lead.

629—Kennedy goes on to win by that score 11-2. Richie Lennox went the distance for the victory. They’ll play on Saturday at Broome Community College at 10 a.m.

Jake: When do they announce the all section selections?

  2. Playas Ball

The All Section Dinner is Sunday, the coaches have by now told the players who were selected. Expect that teams like Mam'k, JJEF, Lakeland, Somers, Pelham, JFK, Briarcliff, Tuckahoe, Valhala and Keio to get the majority of the selections as those teams had the best records. The teams with the best records typically boast the best players and get the most selections.

  3. Recruiting

Is it true that Michael Mercurio is really "International High School Baseball Player of the Year?" It sounds ridiculous but crazy new awards are created and handed out each year. But I read on a previous blog that he was presented with this award in Washington D.C. a few weeks ago. Any truthfulness behind it all?

  4. SectionOnePlayer

I am not exactly sure if that is true. Michael has been dubbed a player who comes up short in clutch situations so an honor such as "International High School Baseball Play of the Year" is a bit above someone of his caliber. No doubt he is a mediocre player but I also heard that award requires semi-decent school grades, which is something the famed shortstop doesn't quite have… any thoughts?

  5. PacFan

SectionOnePlayer…you are a jealous idiot. I'd bet the ranch that you posted both of the above posts just to hear yourself talk. That kid has more game than you will ever have in your lifetime and will be getting paid to play ball while you are sitting on your cardboard eating out of used tuna cans you moron.

  6. baller

Keio and KEnnedy making section 1 small school baseball look real good

  7. bubba

great sharp Keio team. Close game 2-1 -till the flood gates opened in the seventh.

Good luck to Keio in the States which I believe are in a place called BINGHAMTON! :)

Nice chatting with all of you!!

Signing off- Bubba from Port Jeff!

  8. Federations?

Are there federations in baseball? If so, when/where are they held?

  9. Keio observer

I knew when Briarcliff struggled to win against Keio, that they would win the sec 1 c/d championship,,,,,Congrats to Keio, and I hope they win it all

  10. WOW

Congratulations to the Kennedy Gaels. Good Luck in the States. While we are asking questions, is it true that Mike Mercurio was one of only 3 players from NY invited to the Perfect Game National Showcase held at the Metrodome in Minn? He chose not to go to play with his high school teammates in Binghamton. That is some honor since that is the largest recruiting weekend for the top 200 hs player. Don't believe it, find it where I did on the PG site.
    Congratulations Mike.
Joe Rock, way to go superman !!!!!!

    Recruiting/SectionOnePlayer

You are a piece of shart for going after a kid in that manner….Stay off the blog you scum bag

  12. SectionOnePlayer

    Well PacFan,

Under the Bill of Rights I am within my legal rights to speak my opinion, although in this case it is fact. Michael Merurio is a mediocre shortstop, but one with enormous potential. I was simply making a statement that it is difficult to get a full college scholarship with the grades he has. As for his cloth performance issue, that is something that he must work on in the offseason, which is more of a mental concept. Envious I am not, but excited I am…

  13. Huh?

    whats a cloth performance?

  14. Fashion Sense

    I think he's mastered his cloth performance… He's a great Dresser!

  15. Tiger Paws

    SectionOnePlayer?

Why chose to be negative about a player or team at this point. Just man up, bring your chair, cooler and sun tan lotion and go watch them play since your season ended long ago.
Congratulations to the 3 Section One teams that will be in Binghamton playing this weekend. Hopefully some of you others will have more success this summer then you had in the spring.

Let's be positive and and congratulate everyone on a great season. See some of you at the All_Section Dinner

    Go Tigers !!!!

  16. SectionOnePlayer

    Very well,

Clearly I must hibernate back into my hole and agree with all of you. Indeed my season did end many years ago, when I played for Florida and graduated in 1988, but my impressive background is irrelevant. Michael shows extreme potential and talent and I wish him and the rest of the KCHS Gaels best of luck in States. If he proves to be clutch in these two games I promise to take back all my comments about his mental weakness… Apology accepted

  17. GaelFan

Hasen't he proved enough, His Hr's beat Pelham and Somers early in the year. He was the MVP at Iona Prep Tournament and for the Brewster Game. He got the big hit vs Put Valley in the Sectional final and scored 3X in the regional game yesterday. He's our team leader, nough said. In 2 years you can watch him play in college. You should be on the phone right now with Coach O'Sullivan since you really don't need straight A's to play at FL. That we know for a fact.

This is a 17yr old and your worried about clutch players. Go to the Yankee blog and beat up AROD. If you are who you say and played where you say then you should be more of a man then what your showing.

  18. Gaels

The reason the KCHS has had a great year is they are a TEAM. There is no "I" if you notice. Mike carried us early and when he was cold "AC" was hot. Then it was the "Joe's" Rock, Smith and Santangelo. Then how bout Dowd, and Louis? This is a team. No ace just 4 solid pitchers who picked up W after W. Tat wasn't good yesterday and MO was. Richie stepped up today after 2 rough starts his last times out. This is a "Clutch Team" not a group hung up on their individual stats.

Teams win championships not players. Without Mike we are not in the states. Without Nick, we are not in the states. Without the "Joe's" we are not in the states. FACTS

  19. Baseball

Forecast says rain in Binghamton saturday afternoon – will the championship game be sunday if it has to be postponed?

  20. WhatsCookinGoodLookin

For anyone has a problem with my boy Michael Mercurio, you can all come see me, "Big Feens" in B-Town. I am 6 foot nothing but a strong 250 built like an ox. Like KCHS says… ""Let the players play, to officials officiate, and the spectators be positive." FACTS

  21. K-104 Prospect

Is it true James. O'Connell is now being looked at by the top Music Disco Jockey Universities in the country. His ability in the DJ Music business was clearly proven duing the sectional games at KCHS where his high energy music pumped the team up, which could be the reason for the close call verse PV. Holla back if you agree…

  22. Stan hamlet

Cogratulations to Rocky and the Keio boys-These kids like so many Keio athletes are the most disciplined ,dedicated ,and unselfish players one could ever want to coach-Good luck in the Finals-Stan Hamlet-Girls BB coach-

  23. Nonsense

Section1player… You played in Florida with your buddies on vacation. You didn't play for the Gators. Give it a rest with your impressive background. Your comments are pathetic and if you are in fact in your late 30's you need to grow up.

  24. KEIO BB

Just an amazing story for Keio.
Although they were 2nd place in states last year, it was made of bunch of talented seniors so this years team had to start from scratch. It took lots of devotion and hard work. Its obvious from their record how the team got better and better as the season went on. Right now theyre at the top of their game at the best time.
Good luck to them in the States, especially the two aces Tori and Miyoshi.

  25. Josh Thomson

    Answers to a few questions/comments…
    1. No, there is no federation tournament for baseball.
    2. If it rains tomorrow, the games are moved to Sunday.
    3. Lay off Mercurio. Not only is he a teenager, he's an excellent shortstop and one of the best players on a possible state champion. I doubt whoever has criticized him has even played in a final four.

  26. K-Gael

Yes it is true that Kennedy Catholic Team Mascot and # 1 Fan did a phenomenal job broadcasting the sectional games. His hidden DJ talent is now well-known, which has drawn major interest from the likes of ESPN and YES network. Best of luck to Kennedy vs. Gowanda and CBA… and lets refrain from any further harsh comments on the blog, going down to SectionOnePlayers level is being just as immature as he is so lets keep it clean

Dan Diaz, Nanuet, infielder: Eyes turned to the junior shortstop/pitcher after his 17-strikeout virtuoso on May 2. His next start was a no-hitter, followed by a two-hit shutout. Using a biting slider and upper 80s fastball, he went 7-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. Over the last month he batted .550 to raise his season average to .446. His 1.258 OPS was No. 3 in the county; his ERA was No. 4. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Steve Putnick, Pearl River, utility: The graduations of Sean Giblin, Ian Reese, and Jeff Allison left Putnick, a pitcher/third baseman, as Pearl River’s one returning star. The Pirates were 6-3 in his starts; 6-9 otherwise. The senior, who will walk on at Marist, threw more innings than anyone in Rockland except Aviles. He was a table-setter in the 3-hole, reaching base nearly half the time. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Adonis Germosen, East Ramapo, infielder: The Titan bats didn’t hit like they were supposed to, with one exception. Germosen, a senior catcher, belted homers in three straight games before April was even half over ‹ the last of which Carmel coach Bob Shilling called the farthest he’s ever seen at his home field. He hit a county-high six while scoring 24 runs and driving in 20, earning a late roster spot at St. Thomas Aquinas. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Bill Smith, Nanuet, outfielder: The senior provided the legs in Nanuet’s multi-pronged attack. He swiped a base in 13 different games and led the county with 16 steals overall. Part of that was opportunity ‹ he hit over.400 with a .479 on-base percentage. Because of all his mischief on the basepaths, he scored 25 runs, third-best in Rockland. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Ron Gamma, Suffern, coach of the year: After suffering a disheartening 16-0 loss on opening day, it became a wire-to-wire season for the Mounties, who quickly established themselves as the top team in Rockland and proved it by making the Class AA sectional final. Other coaches were most impressed that Gamma negotiated his way through 12 League I-B games without a loss. He knew when to step in and when to cede decisions to his pitching coach. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Jordan Kolinsky, Clarkstown South, infielder: When the senior was shelved with an ankle injury in mid-May, Clarkstown South tumbled. The Vikings went 0-7 with their pitcher/first baseman first sidelined and then hobbled. Despite the handicap, Kolinsky managed to bat .414 with 28 RBI. As a pitcher he was carefully confusing, never throwing the same speed twice in the same at-bat. His 1.78 ERA ranked No. 2 in the county. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Jim Brennan, Suffern, outfielder: Potential had exceeded production for the center fielder. Until his junior year, when he exploded for a .467 average ‹ 200 points better than last year ‹ with a county-leading 34 runs, 10 doubles and nearly .900 slugging percentage, with 25 RBI from the leadoff spot. As Suffern’s third starter he went 5-1, including a masterful playoff performance at John Jay. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Nick Viohl, North Rockland, pitcher: North Rockland leaned heavily on senior pitchers Fasano and Viohl. Viohl delivered with a 1.67 ERA, lowest in Rockland County and eighth-lowest in the section among those with at least 30 innings. He allowed only 26 hits in 46 innings, an incredible ratio. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
Tyler Rorick, Tappan Zee, outfielder: Tappan Zee’s season was almost dead when Rorick pitched the Dutchmen to a 3-1 victory over Pearl River that revived their hopes. As they were winning 12 of 16 he hit in every game. He batted .500 over that stretch and .422 for the year. Without the senior’s clutch stick and arm, Tappan Zee would have folded. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
Joe Ferrara, Clarkstown North, utility: With Chris O’Grady out, the toughest pitching assignments fell to the senior. Even when used in relief, it was in crucial situations, allowing him to pick up decisions in 10 of 11 appearances. As a hitter he was an on-base machine (19 walks) because of a keen eye for pitches. He’ll join Germosen and Wargo at St. Thomas Aquinas. ( Angela Gaul / The Journal News )
George Wargo, North Rockland, infielder: The preseason began with the senior in a battle to be the starting catcher. Coach Tom Lynch has to be happy with his choice after Wargo threw out 60 percent of baserunners. He thrived behind the plate, delivering a .403 average ‹ 100 points higher than last year ‹ to provide rare consistency in North Rockland’s order. ( Peter Carr / The Journal News )
Ryan Fasano, North Rockland, pitcher: Last year’s playoff hero picked up where he left off, tossing seven shutout innings in a 1-0 opening-day win. Though his walks more than doubled, he still only issued 1.9 per seven innings. Three times he pitched more than seven innings. The final start of his career was a complete-game 1-0 loss in which he was robbed of a tying homer in the last inning. (Vincent DiSalvio / The Journal News)
Steve Prosapio, Nanuet, infielder: A victim of his own track record, the Monmouth-bound senior first baseman/pitcher was pitched around regularly. Yet he still repeated as county batting champ (.493). No one in Section 1 brought a swing to every game over the last two seasons like Prosapio. Over that span he hit in 44 of 46 games, including a 29-game hit streak. ( Photo by Christina Jeng / The Journal News )
Mike Chiapparelli, Mamaroneck, coach of the year: In his 29th year in some capacity with the program, Chiapparelli guided the Tigers to their third Section 1 title and first state championship. They finished 30-2, and were paced by an offense that averaged 11.1 runs per game, including 10.1 during their eight postseason games. USA Today’s final regional rankings had Mamaroneck as the No. 6 club in the East. ( The Journal News )
Dan Sorine, Eastchester, utility: As one of the best two-way threats in the area, Sorine, a junior, helped turn the Eagles’ once-floundering season around. He batted .506 with six home runs and 32 RBI and, after overcoming a sore arm, finished 5-1 with 37 strikeouts in 32 innings. He threw a no-hitter against Hen Hud in the Class A quarterfinals, and hit three home runs in a regular season game against Edgemont. ( Christian Roadman / The Journal News )
Alex Maruri, Stepinac, infielder: Although scoring dipped considerably as the CHSAA used wood bats this season, Maruri still managed to bat .500 as the Crusaders won their second Bronx-Westchester division title in four years. No player in the division earned more all-league votes than the Elon-bound Maruri, who led the team with 23 runs scored, and had seven doubles, two homers and 14 RBI. ( Christian Roadman / The Journal News )
