Iuni to Savannah College of Art and Design

October
27

Nick Iuni, a RHP from Mahopac, has committed to pitch for Savannah College of Art and Design, an NAIA school in Savannah, Georgia. You may remember: This is the destination of Kennedy slugger Mike Imbriale, who is now a junior.

Despite a name that doesn’t sound much like a baseball school, SCAD is a good landing spot for Iuni. The Bees had a solid year last year, going 33-24, and saw their first alum make it to the bigs, as knuckleballer Charlie Zink made a start for the Red Sox. (Zink, a couple of you may remember, was roughed up in Boston; but what I just saw now was that he still was named the International League pitcher of the year for his work down on the farm at Triple-A Pawtucket.)

Iuni didn’t get many opportunties as a junior on a staff with C.J. Riefenhauser, Anthony Castillitto and Luke Giumarro on the staff ahead of him. He threw 25 IP and went 3-3, but I’ve heard great things about him from Indians coach Frank Moloney. I’d expect him to slot in as the No. 1 starter in replace of C.J., who is now a freshman at Iona.

Nick Iuni has the nicest muffins out of all the players in section 1

  2. observer

It’s to bad C.J. Riefenhauser and Anthony Castillitto landed at Iona.

  3. GO BLUE !!

Congratulations to Nick and his dad. This sounds like a great fit. I just read on the Perfect Game site that he hit 90 this past weekend down in Jupiter with his summer team. I guess between he and Roche they are going to have a lot of scouts following them.

  4. Seamus O Reily

Young Nick is the funniest/happiest child I have ever met, and he mows kids down. Congrats laddy and if ye happen to see me tractor down in Georgia give me a ring and Ill come pay ye a visit.

  5. Jake

Nick just pitched and lost to the proswing pride tonight in the championship game of an 18u league. He was classy enough to refuse to go out and shake hands with the Pride after the loss.

  6. Fan

I was at the game last night. Nick has no class. He was yelling at his catcher to catch the ball. Maybe if would have thrown some more strikes the Kid would have caught the ball.

  7. player

I played against him last night where he went crazy. He yelled at his catcher to catch the ball but i don’t think thats possible when the ball goes 4 feet above the batters head. He stormed off the field cursing and then proceeded to throw bats at, and punch the fence. I think he needs to gain a little composure to pitch at the college level.

  8. Fan

I didnt know he didnt shake hands. All is not about winning. Everybody loses. A Big Baby who throws 90.

  9. Mike

Nick is a wonderful player. I have watched him play for a couple of games and his game is serious and competetive. Everyone gets competitive and gets frustrated, and when someone who has been commited to the game for this many years, and given a major amount of effort, i think he can have a game to be frustrated either at himself or others.
    He has class
more then many know of in themselves.
    Congrats Nick and his father.

  10. Westchester Baseball Assoiation - 18u

The Westchester Baseball Association 18u Championship game was played last night at Mahopac’s Crane Road field. The finalists were the Hudson Valley Ironmen and the Pro Swing Pride. From what I was told, the Ironmen team is comprised mostly of Mahopac, Put Valley , JJEF, Ketcham players. The Pro Swing Pride team is comprised mostly of Briarcliff, Horace Greely, Blind Brook, Irvington, Pleasantville and Pelham players

The final score was 8-6, Pro Swing. Back and forth entertaiming final in the cold, I was told.

Pro Swing wins the 18u 2008 Fall League Championship in the WBA.

  11. steve

just read some of these blogs…........played against nick the other nite. you should have seen some of the other players one kid who struck out started cursing and was thrown out of the game….... i think nick has a great future. seems as though there is a lot of bad blood against him on that team maybe parents to…mahopac has never been a good place for him… should have played somewhere else like pro swing

    good luck in the future

  12. fan

saw game catcher let at least 12 balls go to back stop between his legs also didnt catch the ones down the middle of the plate

  13. Enough is enough

I have to be honest I have never seen Nick pitch and don’t know anything about him. All I know is he is a young man who does not deserve this much criticism. Just wish him luck in his future and hope he puts on a good showing for local baseball and section 1.

  14. mahopac

He has no class…what a jerk

  15. fan

guess some mahopac people have it out for him they have no class and there a lot of them

  16. fan

he has never said any thing bad of his team mates

there will always be ones that will nut like you no matter what you do

  17. MAYO NUTHIN

WOW a kid from mahopac that left MSA to go play for an travel team. He does well, so well actually that he gets a college scholarship and from what the word is, it’s pretty big. Result, Mahopac people and MSA players bash him. Now that’s good stuff. It’s not good for MSA when they can’t win a fall league.
The kid is going south too, yea we all know iona is south of mahopac LOL
Get off his back and hopefully learn from his experiences.

  18. D man

SCAD is not a D2 school, they aren’t even D3. Good school though. Once again, great LOHUD reporting. GET YOUR DARN FACTS RIGHT!

  19. good stuff

D Man that is very true, good reporting. Lots of missinformation going around. SCAD is an NAIA school out of Georgia. It has no affiliation with the NCAA and D’s. They have had players drafted in each of the last 3 season’s so they can obviously compete. Not to many of our locals other then Manhattan that can boast better then that. Good luck Nicky

  20. Josh Thomson

D man…You’re right and I have made the correction. Thank you.

(Most) everyone else…It is not OK to bash players on here, so cut it out.

  21. D man

Good stuff is 100% right. There is so much bad info posted on these blogs. Worst of all is those who criticize 17 & 18 year old young men. To those idiots, think about what you are posting. Its so easy to hide behind a lame name but I bet if you had the kid in front of you, you tune would change. Josh..no harm, no foul.

  22. unknown blogger

What’s the big deal. DII, DII, NAIA. It’s all college baseball, and there are teams in all divisions who can compete with teams in the other.

I think these blogs are great and report a lot more correct information than bad info…....

If anyone sees any bad info simply correct it in your post…when something goes unchallenged out here , it is probably because it is true

  23. 654

was there any other players on the ironmen that really stood out to anyone?? what ever happened to Petrone

  24. 456

What is an Ironman? What team is that and where the heck do they play? There are just so many popping up.

  25. ironman

the ironmen are a team from mahopac and other putnam & dutchess schools who were very good. just as good as the ny 9 or clippers or rangers…i played them all at some point last summer…..they just happened to get upset by a proswing team of briarcliif and greeley kids. the proswing team could also play with any of the more recognized teams.

  26. 456

so this is the former MSA group. Thanks for the info. Did they get any kids signed? So they are just as good? I think you are playing for different reason’s then the other guys. Plenty of room for everyone I guess is the truth. Thats why teams travel and teams don’t. Everyone is equal, lets all get along.

  27. 863

I think you guys are rediculous about this. Honestly this kid is 17 and your bashing him on one game. He probably has been working on this a long time and you dont even realize the goodness that he has done, you just focus on one bad game. I think you guys need to cut the crap and stop bashing someone whose probably better then half of you guys
    congrats nick, you deserve it

  28. 845

why is it that all the bashing comes from players or parents that don’t play for the Development programs? It’s always directed at them. I have NEVER read here where someone bashes one of these other guys.

  29. info

Does anyone know of what teams are available to play for in Westchester County for 18u next summer..Are these travel teams hand selected or do they have open tryouts?

  30. mahopac

good luck in college nick nice job

  31. mahopac

amasing how a kid can work hard and do so well and gets bashed by his pears or mabe some jelous parent god luck in the future go all the way

  32. Jake

I started all this with simple reporting, I did not mean to demean or bash anyone. I have been in his possition before as a pitcher and i have done my share of anger induced things after a bad outing. The one thing that was way out of line was Nick refusing to go out and shake hands with the other team after the loss. He had over an hour on the bench to cool down but still wouldn’t.

  33. Jake

And both the Ironmen and Proswing deserve more attention then they get. Ive seen proswing play before and they have many future college caliber players like Jesse Zeibon, Jordan Sacks, Forrest Drucker, James Zeolla, JoJo Pandolfo, and Nick Leinegen. Look out for these rising players.

  34. mahopac

jake seems as though you have it out for nick….....

  35. friend

jake either your a player on the team, parent,or coach if your a coach shame on you for bashing him on here if you are a player or parent your bla bla bla

  36. Question

Who are these Pro swing players and where are they from? As you state “prospects”. I’d like to check them out?

  37. friend

    also who are the ironmen

  38. friend

do the ironmen have any other college bownd player getting full ride

  39. shorty

hey jake your out of line bashing on a 17yr old saw one of the iron men games at patterson those kids look out of control in the dugout, most be your team

  40. shorty

hey jake maybe you should try contacting nick and fine out why in didnt come out to shake hands.maybe theres and good reason, or maybe you like bashing on people behind close doors.

  41. player

jake why are you still harping on what happened weeks ago.. move on

  42. Laughing

do the ironboys have any player that is being recruited at ALL ?? I tried to find their website and no luck

  43. not a fan

ironmen players are good… looks as though they beat up on alot of 14yr olds that played up…. like the game in yonkers..lol…guess thats what makes you good.

  44. question

who is Jake….no one on pro swing with that mame. stop bashing kdis that played in a championship game. when you get there you can talk

  45. Jake

The players i mentioned were from Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Greeley, and Blind brook. And I am not bashing Nick.. I was just reporting one incident that I found out of line. And in regards to the line about moving on, I only made my last comments in response to everybody else’s.

  46. oberver

Why was the age moved from august to may 1. 15 year olds are really 16 and so on. Little league world series the kids are huge because they are not 12. Leagues should go by what year you were born in.If 1991 your 17, if 1992 your 16 if 1993 your 15. The month should not matter.

  47. observer

jake u play for the ironboys .havee u watch nick play all season i have played with him all summer if he had an incident maybe it was u never had one on our team was well respected

  48. fan

heres a kid that has made it to the next level of play and all you people have done was bash him shame on you all. jake seem sa though you started this bashing stuff. from what i have been reading it appears you you are doing all of it. i also think you have something against nick.you stated you used to pitch you propably stunk ….......and if you are a dad/coach shame

  49. fan

this kid doesnt deserve this if you what to talk bad about him wait till he turns pro….......lol…....... jakeeeeeee

  50. Jake

The hilarious thing is I havn’t been bashing the kid.. I did also say that I’m sure he’s a fine kid… I was just pointing something out.

  51. correct

i didn’t see anyone getting bashed here. that is unless whatever was said is not true..but it is true..if someone has a temper tantrum on the field and will not line up with the other team after a game and it is reported acurately,,,,where is the bashing?

  52. sam

jake why are you still on this blog maybe your using more than one name.why dont you move on. kid may have had one incedent and you keep going and going,is it because no other iron boys got any recigniton in the fall like =why dont you just stop

  53. correct

so big deal the kid had a tantrum jake you most be mister perfect leave and do something else with your life and leave the kid alone

  54. Jake

i am moving on..? I only posted to clarify that I wasn’t bashing anyone.. read what I wrote

  55. Enough is enough

I know this blog isnt about this but I figure what better place to ask this than a baseball blog… I see on All-Section football page it says Steve Greene from BREWSTER… did he transfer back from John Jay?

  56. no

    2 different steve greens

  57. Workouts

Yes Nick will be there along with many other players you’ve read about on the blogs and in the newspapers.

For any HS player looking to get ready fo the season The Clippers are offering 8 weeks of open workouts in Elmsford at the brand new HardBall Training Center. Checkout the website http://www.clippersbaseball.org or email info@clippersbaseball.org

  58. baseball 2010

How much for the workouts. Any openings on the Clippers for 2010 grads

  59. Read

Read the post and e-mail the teams or spend 5 minutes and look at their web sites. Prett simple, no?

  60. Winter Fees

NY nine is 375 . clippers have no info on their site

  61. GaelFan

Clippers is 8 weeks for $200. Your workouts and tryouts are combined

  62. sam

attended a clipper work out sunday night pretty impressive there was a few college guy and a couple of pro scouts on hand i was told the a couple of the clipper players are being looked at by some pro teams a college guys were on hand also helping out maybe some of the anti clipper people should try checking them out on sundat nights i was impressed

  63. nine guy

Stopped by at NY9 workout on saturday at queens college. also very impressive. college players, pro players (from marlins and cardinals organizations) working drills with kids ages 12-18. they also had some ex ny9 players helping with workout and a great bunch of coaches.

  64. AP

The clippers are a good organization, however is there any hope from the class of 2010, please name some kids i would love to know. Nick Iuni is good and i will love to see ahow Mahopac fairs this year with the departure of four great athletes. Once the kids leave this year will Mahopac have any hope, i find that very hard to believe. Once again please name some kids i would love to know some pitchers, infielders and outfielders, Mahopac will never be a contender

  65. jake

ap you are correct mahopac will never be a contender there coaches are so far out of touch there is talent in mahopac but some of them dont play in school.. wonder why…

  66. 2010

The Clippers 2010 and I am not totally sure of the accuracy so please correct if I mess up….. Espinal OF from Beacon is a top prospect. Possibly in the top five players in that class. They have Lang from Ketcham who has been a varsity player since 9th grade. I believe a kid named Moran is playing with them and is one of their infielders who looks real good. I think he attends Iona, not sure of his class ? They have 1B/P named Tandy from Henrick Hud I believe. Big power hitter. Melville is a pitcher from Kingston, 6’5” RHP. Looks good.Looks like they have a number of good prospects, position players and pitchers at their winter workouts but I am sorry , I cannot name them all. Some I am sure will play with them.

  67. AP

4 or 5 kids will not change my mind i would love to know from the coaches who they believe will be a impact. I heard Team Demarini/ Golden Arms collapsed does anyone know where those kids are playing?

  68. AP

4 or 5 kids will not change my mind i would love to know from the coaches who they believe will be a impact. I heard Team Demarini/ Golden Arms collapsed does anyone know where those kids are playing baseball?

  69. Clipper Coach

As soon as we pick the team I’ll let you know. There is a lot of talent around Section 1 this year in the 2010 class. We can only comment on theones who have shown up to our workouts. Players like Bradshaw, Green, Aviles are top arms but play with 3 other programs. Same goes for Rosenfeld, McGibbon,Smith, Cole who are position playrs.

From what we can say, 11 players were invited from our workout to go to the Area Code Team tryouts in June. That is a great opportunity.

  70. Big Daddy

Clippers coach, this whole section is about Nick Iuni one of your players I believe, has he brought any other players from Mahopac that will make any kind of presence on the team?

  71. Clipper Coach

Mahopac should be well represented this summer on the 10’. It looks like Nick will be the only one on the 09’ Team. From the early looks, 4 weeks into the workouts, players on the 10’ team could be coming from Mahopac (2 or 3), Iona Prep, Frodham Prep, Ardsley, Carmel, Hen Hud, Kingston, Bishop Moore in Orlando, Minisink Valley, Valley Central, Ketcham, Beacon and Don Bosco.

The 09’ team will have players who are headed to SCAD,High Point(6), Winthrop, Manhattan, Dominican, Elon, Guilford, and 2 or 3 uncommitted who could be committed since there has been a lot of interest from the coaches who have attended the workouts.

We will have more at the end of Feb. The Mahopac kids have done very well for themselves at the workouts. They should have 3 or 4 solid pitchers again.

    h

  72. Big Daddy

Please keep everyone informed i speak for many when I say, I believe Mahopac has alot to prove

  73. Clipper Coach

We don’t have any additional Mahopac kids that are seniors other then Nick. Not sure where all those guys are playing during the summer nor have I heard anything about where they’re going to college and if they plan on playing.

Big Daddy, do you have any information on these guys? The young guys have some talent, just not sure they get an opportunity. Nick really didn’t but he developed later.

  74. jake

hey big daddy why are you so concern about what mahopac does as for nick iuni he will have no impact in mahopac at all

  75. Bid Daddy

I am concerned because I follow Mahopac strongly becuase i have noticed them alot and there players, the question is if they can contend and since nick Iuni is on the team and the clippers, I just wanted to know if anyone had anything on them. Thats a shame they dont get an oppurtunity

  76. jake

big daddy if you follow mahopac as you say then you probably know more then you say

  77. Bill

someone asked for some 2010 prospects and I have a few under the radar players I saw play this summer. James D’alto from Briarcliff ha commited to Stonehill and fellow bear Jordan Sacks is getting interest. Forrest Drucker from pleasantville and Rob Weigel from Yorktown I was told have been used sparingly in highschool and are raw but from what I’ve seen and heard from coaches over the summer are capable of throwing high 80’s hitting 90 this upcoming year with the proper mechanical tinkering. Many colleges have been in contact with all three.

  78. Nice

OK Bill. If there are MANY colleges calling them (?) then they are not under the radar. Where they play may be why they are under the radar.

  79. Big Daddy

hey clippers coach, any new updates i would love to here them.

  80. Clipper Coach

Both Rosters 09’ and 10’ will be announced March 1st. I can give you this. 10 players from the workouts were invited by the NY Yankees scouting staff to attend the Area Code/East Coast Pro tryouts in June. This is an amazing opportunity for these players.

  81. Big Daddy

Yes, please let me know March 1st about the teams. I will try to make a practice and check everyone out. The 09’ team I am not worried about, but I would love to see the 10’ team, that is what attracts me the most to your program.

  82. Bill

    Nice

yes in that regards they are not under the radar but i consider them that becasue of the lack of attention each of there programs get. quite the shame.

  83. Big Daddy

Huh? Bill, I dont get what your trying to say

  84. Big Daddy

    any new updates, clippers coach?

  85. jake

lookig for clippers roster havent been able to find dose anyone know who made the team
