Cosenza to Vermont…and how ’bout them catchers?

I’ve been to caught up in hoops to check in, but I wrote earlier this week about Jon Cosenza of Lakeland, who committed to catch at the University of Vermont. You can find the story here.
Cosenza, who steered a pitching staff with an ERA under 2.00, will join Somers ace Dan Zlotnick, a teammates of his on the Shrub Oak American Legion. Those two will have an opportunity to form a battery for the Catamounts for four years, which, according to Cosenza, is something they’re looking forward to.
Cosenza’s signing is the next-to-last piece of the puzzle for what has to be one of the best group of players at one position in such a small area in Section 1 history. I’m serious, too. You may think that’s impossible to qualify (it is), but just consider this list:
Jon Cozensa, Lakeland: Vermont
Tim Panetta, Fox Lane: UConn
Anthony Corona, Kennedy: C.W. Post
Alan Filauro, John Jay: undecided, but has/had D-I interest
Tyler Donovan, Iona Prep (Brewster resident): Winthrop
That’s five players in a 10-mile radius who will play significant college baseball. Can anyone else come up with such a condensed group of college-bound players at the same position?

Josh Thomson has done some of everything since joining The Journal News in
March 2003. He began working for the Gannett weeklies during the winter of
2002 as a freelance writer. He joined the daily staff soon after and has
since covered various high school and pro sports. Away from sportswriting,
Josh lives in Westchester and spends his free time either with his
fiancee, Sarah, or expertly managing his various championship-winning
fantasy sports teams. He's visited 21 major-league baseball stadiums and
insists that Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are the best by far. Josh
graduated from Carmel High School in 1998, then went to Boston University,
where, in 2002, he received a degree in communications with a minor in
history.
Jake Thomases has covered baseball, hockey, girls basketball, and girls soccer for the Journal News since arriving in 2003. He previously interned at The Poughkeepsie Journal while attending Vassar College. He is socking money away under his mattress to buy the Knicks, at which time he will trade Jerome James to Cleveland for a ham sandwich.

Unfortunate news for the above article. The University of Vermont announced on Friday that they are dropping their baseball program effective at the end of this season. This is a sign of the economic times and a few other schools could be dropping programs also. Word is that Northern Iowa is following suit. These poor guys now have to start the process all over again.
This doesn’t take away from the facts above about the quality of the players.
Also heard that Filaro will be heading to join former summer teammate CJ Reifenhausen at Guilford tech in NC.
Northen Iowa announced theirs yesterday. At least Vermont did it before any of their kids played a game. The underclassmen will all ask for red-shirts to save eligibility and they will all be give a free transfer so they don’t have to sit a year. The problem is most schools have committed a large part of their scholarship money for the 09’ class. With these 2 schools and more to come there are at least 40 kids looking to transfer plus the hs sniors who have signed NLI to those schools are also free to move. That make approx 50 kids scrambling to move to other schools.
