Zlotnick going to Marist; Cosenza mulling options

February
28

A couple days later here, but Somers senior Dan Zlotnick has already found a new home at Marist. Zlotnick told me he was lucky. Marist was originally his second choice and the program still had scholarship money left to offer. The Red Foxes contacted him as soon as Vermont dropped its program and the deal was done less than four days later. Wow.

Lakeland senior Jon Cosenza has yet to decide his next destination but he has a few opportunities. Albany and Cortland, his original second choice, are both very interested.

You can read the players’ reaction to Vermont dropping its program in this story I wrote for yesterday.

They were understandably stunned. Cosenza said there was no indication from the program that baseball would be cut.

I saw their coach on Shrub Oak, Sonny Graci, at the County Center on Wednesday. He told me his phone was ringing at 11:30 Friday night with coaches inquiring about Zlotnick and Cosenza’s availability. Obviously, the interest was high in Zlotnick. From what Graci said, I suspect Cosenza will land on his fell as well. You have to feel it’s only just after the shock of what happened last week. Good for them.

    Josh,

Why would you ask Sonny Graci (Who just claims to know about baseball) about these two kids? Mr. Robinson and Mr. Wooten are the ones you should talk to. They work hard for these kids and help them get into college. Sonny Graci is a loud mouth know nothing about baseball guy. He doesn’t even coach that team. He just brags about it and is more like a figure head. Please don’t refer to Sonny Graci as anyone’s “Coach” ever again. He is an awful “Coach” and if I was Coach Robinson or Coach Wooten, I would not be happy with you at all!!!!

Baseball fan…Relax. I just happened to run into him and asked him about it. I just thought it was an interesting fact.

Baseball Fan I have to agree and disagee with you on this one. Why would Josh talk to Sonny? Because I can guarantee you that Mike Cole the Vermont Assistant and former Manhattan College coach saw those guys play at the Graci Legion tournament not at Somers or Lakeland. In fact he probably never had a conversation with either.

What Coach Robinson and Coach Wooton did was COACH and teach these players. Exactly to your point that Sonny is not a coach. He’s an organizer and has his tie with Legion. If he had any say in what these kids were doing they would be at Concordia or dominican where he has his hooks.

The fact that one and possibly both these guys get the chance to get a second chance is just great for them and I applaud. Zlotnic is a talented player and he could have had any number of schools chasing him again if he wanted to. Somers will be a major factor this year. Cant’ wait till they play the Cross River gang.

BTW did you have a bad experience with the SO Legion team?

  4. Baseball Fan

HAHA JAY…could you tell my son had an awful experience on the Shrub Oak Legion team with Graci? The kids on that team are sold a bag of goods and then he switches them all around. The actual “coaches” on that team additionally have no clue about the game. They berate the kids all the time…when they go on trips to tourney’s, the games are secondary to the coaches and Graci…they are always just worrying about where they are eating that night. And Josh, sorry to have upset you with my comments, just venting.

Josh, When will you start your coverage on the upcoming season?

  10. hsbaseballfan

Got some strong teams out there this year. Should be an exciting year for section one baseball. Mamo, John Jay, JFK, Suffern all have the majority of their teams back and a year older/better. Lakeland, Ketchum, Yorktown, Somers should also be strong. Who else looks good?

  11. hsbaseballfan

    Can’t forget Carmel.

  12. Bill

Briarcliff will challenge JFK being led by Sacks, Lombardi, and allready committed D’Alto. Pleasantville has two pitchers that should play college ball. Just some small schools for yah.

  13. Baseball Fan

What kids from Pleasantville are you talking about, I dont know of any?

  14. section 1

briarcliff will not challenge JFK at all. if you look at the matchups between these two schools for the past 4 years you will see that JFK has blown out briarcliff in every single meeting. im sorry bill but i dont see many teams standing a chance against JFK

  15. westchester bball

Briarcliff got their ass kicked by kennedy last year and so did pleasantville. both teams lost their best players while kennedy has returned almost everyone. this year will be just like last year

  16. bball

Tryouts are starting today for many schools. THat means baseball is under way…when are some blogs from josh gonna come rolling in?

  17. OMG

Maybe Kennedy can get another State Championship with an *

Kennedy should be playing in the CHSAA.

  18. westchester bball

haha thats funny bc i didnt hear any complaining when they were bad for all those years? but now that they beat the **** out of you they should go to the CHSAA? and they beat 2 CHSAA teams last year, St. Ray’s and Iona Prep (winning Iona Prep’s own tournament)

  19. OMG

how bout instead of kennedy playing in the chsaa, they stay in class be and Briarcliff goes back to class D so maybe then can win the state again

  20. fan

kennedy’s lineup is going to be just as strong as it was last year up and down the whole lineup well except for the kid dowd but they’ll be able to survive with him down there. I think they have enough power in there lineup to make up for the lack of power dowd provides.

  21. good stuff

With D2 players up and down the line-up Kennedy should kick some butt. What does everyone else have? Like 1 or 2 guys. BTW Dowd is a stud and could start at Clemson next year

  22. StopHating

Why all the hating on the CHSAA schools? I never hear anyone whining about Schecter or Keio playing in the league with the public schools.

Mostly if you look at the situation and actually get a clue, you will notice this is done primarily in coed schools or all girl schools that are private, because there are not enough sports for their girls to play in if they stay in a private school league like CHSAA very little variety of sports. You can’t choose one for the boys to play in and one for the girls. If Kennedy was Boys only, they would likely be in the CHSAA league.

You act like you know something but, you don’t because private schools play in many of the other sections throughout NY, so you could move to another section if you like, but guess what? Still happening.

And it is so true that there is no complaining about the weaker teams. Get over it already.

  23. observer

why doesn’t briarcliff try to score a run against kennedy before they start talking about winning. they were outscored 19-0 last year in 2 games

  24. hs athletic fan

Everyone who plays against JFK or watches the team respects their ability and how the coaches get the most out of this talented group…however..most folks find their fans quite loud and unruly…a visit to JFK to play and you wonder how come the school cannot influence their fans in a more positive fashion.

  25. See Ya

Don’t worry, you can come back to the games. He’s gone, his son graduated and is playing D1 baseball. Just come watch ur team, congratulate the Kennedy boys and be on ur way home. There is a good pizza place right down the street too. Cheer ur son up!!!
