Perfect Game regional seniors list

March
27

Reader “PG Northeast” posted a link to Perfect Game USA’s preseason All-American list for seniors in the northeast. I’m reposting it here. Four locals made the first team.

Jimmy Brennan, the Suffern CF committed to St. John’s is one. Following a poor sophomore season Brennan, who looks about 25, exploded for a .467 average, 19 extra-base hits, 34 runs, and 25 RBI from the leadoff spot.

John Jay SS Anthony Iacomini is also there. You all know about Yock. A .575 average. Twelve home runs. A slugging percentage over 1100. Fifty-one freakin runs batted in. He’s headed to South Carolina.

The third is Mahopac pitcher Nick Iuni. His numbers last year weren’t good even though he went 3-3. The one bright sign is 23 strikeouts in 25 innings, giving hope he can shrink a 7.00 ERA. He’ll attend Savannah College of Art and Design.

Last is Steven Roche, a Yonkers resident who attends Iona Prep. Roche pitched 15 innings for the Prep last year without allowing a run. That’s a 0.00 ERA for all you non-math majors. He walked 11 but K’ed 20 and only gave up two hits. He’s headed to High Point after the season.

Making the second team were Beacon’s Anthony Cervone, Kennedy’s Anthony Corona and Mike Mercurio, Iona Prep’s Tyler Donovan, John Jay’s Alan Filauro, and Mamaroneck’s Sean Hagan.

Congratulations to all four kids who made the Perfect Game First Team. I had the pleasure of watching Iacomini play a couple of times and all i can say is WOW. This kid is a monster at the plate and a very impressive middle infielder. Jimmy Brennan is also a very good hitter from what i can see and makes an excellent leadoff batter for Suffern. I also hear great things about Steven Roche, although not given much opportunity last year. Roche brings in the heat throwing well above the 90mph mark. I don’t know much about Nick Iunni, who is supposedly Mahopac’s #1 this year, but i hear he throws around 90mph also. From his stats posted on this blog I’m not entirely certain as to how he made the first team because a 7.00 ERA is anything but impressive. Congratulations to all once again

  2. question

    Jake/Josh

When will the baseball preview come out?

  3. Because

Perfect Game does not care what u did in HS. They rank based on what u did during the summer and where ur headed to school. Brennan, Roche and Iuni did not have good HS numers. Brennan was hurt.

It will be interesting to see how Steven Roche will perform this season given the new found pressure that he has never had to deal with. Roche has been receiving alot of hype and that is not always the best thing for a kid to be exposed to when he doesnt have too many innings under his belt. However one thing is for certain, the kid can throw a fastball by any hitter in the county, especially when he keeps his hitters off balanced with his slider. I would not be surprised to see this kid in a big league uniform one day. Much of the same can be said for Nick Iuni who has never had to deal with being the number 1 starter on his team. Make no mistake, Iuni has great stuff and In my opinion will be very succesful this year and at SCAD. Both are very talented pitchers and can pitch with anyone in the county. Having known them both I can say that they are also two very nice kids and I wish them the best of luck.

  5. CHSAA

    All four are great players.

That SS from Hen Hud must be going somewhere. Great arm and great bat. Not best competition in the section from still great looking player. Another player who I would think is going to go somewhere is Gaston Rojas from Carmel. Saw him play over summer twice and ball absolutely exploded off his bat.
