Florida kid throws four straight no-hitters

April
28

If you were watching SportsCenter this morning you heard about Patrick Schuster, the Tampa-area high schooler who’s going for his fifth straight no-hitter today. The 6-foot-2 lefty senior is already signed on to play for Florida U next year. As you can imagine he’s had a truckload of scouts at his recent games.

Even if he throws another no-no today he’ll be one behind the all-time high school record of six straight, set in 1961 and matched in 1989. Think about how incredible that is. No-hitters are as much about luck as skill. Schuster has struck out 60 during the streak, an average of 15 a game. That means an average of six balls put in play per game, or 24 total. If just one of those 24 finds a hole the whole thing is over. He could throw a great pitch, get a guy to barely flick it with the end of his bat, and it flares into right field for a base hit. No mo no-no.

Which is why the odds are against him extending the streak tonight even if he brings his best stuff. If he somehow does the improbable again you’ll hear about it on ESPN.

UPDATE 6:05: Oops, guess I put the whammy on Schuster. He gave up a double in the third inning today to lose his fifth straight no-hit bid. What a loser.

Top 10 poll, Apr. 28

April
28

Several changes have taken place, although the top three remain the same. Here goes…

1. MAMARONECK (5-3): It sounds like it was a crazy game up at John Jay-East Fishkill, but Mamaroneck prevailed, 6-4. John Jay was the only club to beat Mamaroneck in Section 1 play last season. The Tigers need their bats to bash top pitchers like they did during last year’s playoffs or their going to have to tread the tight rope later next month. It is early though. (LAST WEEK: 1)

2. SUFFERN (4-2): Robbie Aviles is 3-0, but the Mounties are 1-2 in games he hasn’t pitched. Their bats must pick it up to carry them on those other days when the margin of error is slimmer. (LAST WEEK: 2)

3. KENNEDY (7-0): In the Kennedy-Eastchester game last Wednesday, Dom Cecere bunted with one out and runners at first and third, giving up the out to put the go-ahead run at second in the top of the sixth. My reaction tells you all you need to know about the Kennedy lineup. I understood what Cecere wanted, the chance at a go-ahead two-run single. But how can you stop the Kennedy lineup in the subsequent two innings? It is just so hard to keep down. Sure enough, Eastchester tied it and Kennedy scored five in its next at-bat. The Gaels are just mashing. (LAST WEEK: 3)

4. ARLINGTON (8-1): A three-game sweep of Ketcham have the Admirals all the buzz of Dutchess. We haven’t seen them face much else inside the section, but that sweep is enough to move them up the rankings. They deserve the props. This is yet again a dangerous club. (LAST WEEK: 5)

5. FORDHAM PREP (4-2): Tough call. Yes, the Rams did lose 1-0 to Iona and Steven Roche on Saturday, but they also beat former No. 10 Clarkstown South and James Monroe, and nearly beat George Washington, losing in nine innings. Fordham is really a couple two-run singles from threatening the top three. (LAST WEEK: 4)

6. MOUNT ST. MICHAEL (5-1): Steven Rivera was brilliant against Stepinac. He set the tone that Mount will no longer be short on pitching. Now the Mountaineers are legit contenders for the division. Let’s see what happens this Friday against Iona. (LAST WEEK: 7)

7. STEPINAC (4-3): Consider yourselves on notice Stepinac. The Crusaders’ bats are awfully quiet early in the season. Their brilliant rotation anchors need some support if they expect to contend for another division crown. Here comes Fordham on Saturday, followed by Iona (at Iona) next Wednesday. (LAST WEEK: 6)

8. LAKELAND (8-0): The Hornets are still awaiting some quality wins, and they’ll need some to keep shooting up the rankings. Still, Joe Arena and Jon Demarte have been one of the best 1-2 punches in the section. I’ll get a chance to see this club tonight when it takes on Yorktown at 6:30. (LAST WEEK: NR)

9. JOHN JAY-EF (3-3): I’m torn on this team. The no-hitter of Carmel, the two-run loss to Mamaroneck and wins over Suffern and Greeley are all positive signs. But one-run losses to Beacon and New Ro are head scratchers. I’m taking a wait-and-see approach. I’m waiting until they play more league games before seeing whether to move ‘em up or move ‘em out. (LAST WEEK: No. eight)

10. MAHOPAC (4-2): Yes, Mahopac lost to Carmel, but its resume is much more impressive overall. The Indians beat John Jay and Scarsdale last week and suffered both of their losses by a single run. Plus, with Nick Raptis, Pat Farina and the Petrones, Matt and Alec, anchoring a strong lineup, Mahopac isn’t just about its pitching this year. That’s worth noting. (LAST WEEK: NR)

On the bubble: John Jay (5-2), Iona Prep (3-4), Carmel (4-2), Clarkstown South (4-4), Hastings (7-1).

Annunziata home run highlights Fordham Prep comeback over Clarkstown South

April
26

It was a stroke of good fortune that the only two local teams in the Northeast Elite tournament at Clarkstown South were playing each other today. The only thing that would have made the Fordham Prep-Clarkstown South meeting more appealing was if it was the championship. Alas, both lost their first-rounders on Friday and fell into the consolation bracket.

Fordham Prep shocked host South with its biggest comeback of the year in a 10-7 win. The Vikings (4-4) were up 5-0 after two innings. One and a half innings later they were down 10-5.

The Rams (6-2) scored six in the third and four in the fourth. Jack Giannini drove in three and TJ Mangan opened the scoring with a two-run double. Sal Annunziata put them on top with a two-run towering homer over the left-field fence. Annunziata, a sophomore 1B batting sixth, has been heating up in recent days.

No Fordham pitcher went more than two innings. The Rams were saving their best for league play. Liam Josephson, a starter coming out of the bullpen as he rehabs a shoulder injury, got the win. He entered with the bases loaded and nobody out in the second inning.

South got two hits and two runs out of Frank Salerno and two RBI out of Alex Lorenc.

From my spot behind the Fordham bench it looked like the Rams were close to easing off early in the game. Their spot starter was ineffective, they’d made a few errors, and they were playing their fourth game in three days. (After their tournament win over James Monroe yesterday they went back into Westchester for a 1-0 loss to Iona Prep.)

We know that we’re good,” Giannini said. “We know that we were better than them. It was shocking to us that we were down.”

But South didn’t give them enough time to get down on themselves. By letting them come right back with that six-run third inning the Vikings gave away the mental edge.

LaSalle, which beat South in the first round, ended up winning the tournament 14-0 over Guilderland.

Sunday notebooks

April
26

A quick word before I get to today’s links: Things have gotten a little too nasty here in recent days. Some of the comments have included insults, and we simply can’t have that. I hope everyone can clean up their acts. If people continue to behave this way, we will have to consider banning them. So, please, let’s clean it up.

Now, on to the notebooks:

In the North, I focus on a few topics: Lakeland sophomore Joe Arena is off to a near-perfect start in his first year filling the considerable shoes of Brendan Hourihan; Briarcliff and Rye Country Day are headed to Staten Island for a game this week; Dan Zlotnick was sharp in his return from a hamstring injury; and Ryan Carter and Brian McNamara of Brewster did what no one had dared to do this season. … But the biggest shift came in the power rankings, where Mount St. Michael (No. 4) and Lakeland (No. 5) moved into the Westchester/Putnam poll, shoving aside Stepinac and Carmel.

In the Central and Southern notebook, I start with an item on Hastings’ perfect start — which, of course, was foiled yesterday in 10 innings by Nanuet. Coach Jesse Waters told me last year was a rebuilding season. This year is clearly anything but. … I also have a note on Walter Allen, the new coach at Mount Vernon. Allen wasn’t approved until the beginning of this month because of budgetary concerns but he ran offseason and preseason workouts anyway. He coached five years under Joe Mazzella, so it’s been a smooth transition despite the delay in his approval.

Jake had no changes atop the power rankings in Rockland, where Suffern remained No. 1. He also has a note on North Rockland’s Vinny Martorelli, who has repaid Tom Lynch’s faith in him with a recent 8 for 10 hot streak. … It is also a busy week for a few Rockland teams. Clarkstown South has a three-game set with North Rockland, but must also face Suffern (and probably Robbie Aviles) during that stretch, while Pearl River has to play four straight days because of the all the rain.

Shutout city

April
24

Lots and lots of shutouts tonight. Special props are owed to Steven Rivera of Mount St. Michael and Michael Bradshaw, who had some duel today at Mount. Rivera beat Bradshaw 1-0, although neither pitcher surrendered an earned run. … This game should be titled “potential realized.” Not only did Bradshaw continue to prove himself right out of the varsity gate, Rivera continued to harness his great potential. I saw him twice last year against Iona Prep and both times he showed dominant stuff but wasn’t able to sustain it. This year he is.

Other items of note: Jon Demarte had 15 strikeouts in Lakeland’s 4-2 win over a Brewster team that beat Carmel and its top two pitchers 11-6 the night before; Tom Medico (shutout) and Nick Orlando (sixth-inning homer) led Eastchester over Magnus 1-0; Charlie Galasso led Harrison to a 1-0 shutout of Somers, thus spoiling the ‘09 debut of Dan Zlotnick. The lefty tossed five innings in his first start of the year (hamstring).

Here are more of Friday’s diamond heroes:

Saunders 5, Roosevelt 2: At Saunders, Ben Margulies had winning RBI in the sixth inning. Mike Nolan followed with a two-run home run to sustain the lead.  Julio Matos went 2 for 3 with two doubles for the Indians.

New Rochelle 4, White Plains 0: At White Plains, Brett Rosen had two hits for the Huguenots. Teammate Austin Walsh had a hit and an RBI. Doug Sewitch had a double for the Tigers.

John Jay 14, Nyack 0: At John Jay, Steve Green and Harrison Everts combined on a two-hitter and Anthony Iacomini hit a three-run home run for the Indians. Andrew Calo also had three RBI.

Hastings 13, Ardsley 4: At Hastings, Devin Perez and Greg Pezzuto had three RBI for the Yellow Jackets. Dylan Marshall went 3 for 4 with a double for Ardsley.

Putnam Valley 14, Croton-Harmon 1: At Croton-Harmon, Matt Cordaro had a double and a single with three RBI. Teammates Travis Gembecki and Walter Sherwood each had two RBI. Kevin Soares had an RBI for the Tigers.

Tuxedo 6, North Salem 5: At North Salem, Matt Mastroianni went 3 for 5 with two RBI for the Tigers. Teammate Nick Rinalli went 3 for 4.

Tappan Zee 20, Yonkers 0, 6: At Yonkers, John Garcia went 3 for 4, including two triples, with four RBI. Teammates Joe Gryzlo and Aaron Duffy each had two hits and three RBI. Jhonna Gutierrez and Brian Ramirez each had a double for the Bulldogs.

Lakeland 4, Brewster 2: At Brewster, Jon Demarte struck out 15 and in a four-hit victory. John Cosenza went 3 for 3 with a double and a home run for the Hornets. Chris Byrnes homered for Brewster.

Fox Lane 5, Horace Greeley 4: At Horace Greeley, Donny Castaldo went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, and Jesse Hunt had two hits and two RBI. Brian Devoto allowed three earned runs in a complete game victory. Andres Larramendi doubled twice and drove in a run for the Quakers.

Harrison 1, Somers 0: At Harrison, Charlie Galasso pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Huskies. Galasso had two hits and a run scored, and Mike DeLacy delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Dan Zlotnick pitched five scoreless innings in his first start of the season because of a strained hamstring.

Nanuet 6, Edgemont 5, 8: At Nanuet, Chris Klass had a walk-off home run in the eighth inning for the Golden Knights. Teammate Mike Iozzo had a double and a base hit with two RBI. Bradley Baye went 3 for 4, including two doubles, with two RBI for the Panthers.

Tuckahoe 7, Dover 5: At Tuckahoe, Alex Melendez had a two-run home run for the Tigers. Mike Ciotti allowed two runs, two walks and struck out four.

Eastchester 1, Albertus Magnus 0: At Eastchester, Nick Orlando had a sixth inning home run. Teammate Tom Medico pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts. Jesus Hernandez allowed one run and one hit with five strikeouts for the Falcons.

Brewster 11, Carmel 6: Late Thursday at Dutchess Stadium, Chris Byrnes had three RBI and Joe Piacquadio had two hits, including a triple, for the Bears, who went ahead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth. Ryan Shilling went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Carmel.

Mount St. Michael 1, Stepinac 0: At Mount, Steven Rivera threw a four-hitter for the Mountaineers. He also doubled in the fourth and later scored on an error. Michael Bradshaw allowed zero earned runs in 6.2 innings for Stepinac.

Hackley 10, Riverdale 1: At Hackley, Ace Pidoriano allowed one unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Will Small went 2 for 3, including a double, with two RBI.

Panas 11-17, Peekskill 1-0: At Peekskill, Pedro Reynoso had a double and a base hit with an RBI for the Panthers in the first game. Josh Gill had an RBI for the Red Devils in the first game. Northeast Elite highlights a 20-plus game slate

April
24

Today begins the Northeast Elite tournament at Clarkstown South, the largest tournament the LoHud will see all season. Eight teams will play three games each over three days at two sites, the high school and nearby Germonds Park. The winner will be crowned Sunday afternoon.

The tournament attracts a talented field from around the state. This year’s crop includes state semifinalist LaSalle, three-time PSAL champion Tottenville, PSAL runner-up James Monroe, and nationally-ranked George Washington. At last check GW was 25-1 and ranked 20th by USA Today. Four players from last year’s field went on to be drafted by major league baseball.

Despite drawing that kind of crowd every year (actually I feel like the competition in the past has been even a little bit better) Clarkstown South has won the last two tournaments. Part of it has to do with the fact that some of these elite teams pitch their third and fourth starters, but still, GW’s third starter has to be pretty good. South begins its quest for a third title against LaSalle tonight at 7:15. Fordham Prep, the other local, draws GW at 4:15.

The championship is Sunday at 1:15 at the high school. You can get all the tournament details on South’s website.
