Kennedy shortstop Mike Mercurio and Mamaroneck center fielder Matt McGovern were named 2009 Louisville Slugger All-Americans today by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Mercurio, a senior headed to High Point, was named to the All-American team. McGovern, a senior bound for Boston College, was named an honorable mention All-American.

Mercurio led Kennedy to the top seed in the Class B tournament for a second straight year and to a final record of 21-2. He ranked tied for second in the Lower Hudson Valley in hits (38) and RBI (38) and batted .469 with four home runs.

McGovern batted .487 with 45 runs scored, 28 RBI, 11 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 29 stolen bases during Mamaroneck’s run to a second straight Class AA state title. He also pitched 14.2 innings and allowed no runs on eight hits.

Im not trying to bash mike mercurio but dont you find it unfair that mcgovern had just as good if not better stats then him against much better competition in a higher class and yet he only got honorable mention and mike got all american.

  2. Crazy

Not only is it unfair it’s crazy. I don’t know what kind of pull Kennedy has. They get 5 All-Section awards while Mamaroneck gets 4. Taylor Mondshien, Gabe Klein? Neither get All-Section. I’d rather have either of them on my team rather than anyone on Kennedy except Corrona. What a joke.

  3. fan

    This is ridiculous.

There are other shortstops in class B with comparable stats to mercurio.

The kid from Hastings, and Diaz from nanuet come to mind. You’re telling me Mercurio is that much better then them? No way.

And to even compare Mcgovern to Mercurio is crazy. He’s in a another league compared to Mercurio.

  4. Fan

I could name 10 kids in “AA” that should have gotten this over Mercurio. You’ve got to be kidding me.

  5. baseball101

    a.petrone best s.s. in AA

  6. oh well

Mercurio is getting it now when he has been known to bash other players. wHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND! Lesson for all

  7. WOW

    Dobbs whooped kennedy

It’s hard for all of us to judge a relative strength of a player and these all american things are never that accurate and subject to politics, biases etc. But college coaches and recruiters devote enormous time and resources to these evaluations. So just consider that one player is going to a mediocre, sub .500 team in the Big South and the other is going to an ACC team that won their tournament, played in the college world series and lost to #1 ranked Texas 3-2 in a 25 inning game. So I think the verdict is clear – both are fine players but one stands out based on where he’s going next year.

  9. Don't Know

There may be players that are better then both of these guys. The difference is that their respective coaches were proactive enough and informed to send in their information to the committee. Don’t fault the players go ask the high school coaches. Mam’k has players on here every year because Chappy participates.

Congratulations to these two players and hopefully some of the other coaches wake up

  10. haha

This is a complete joke and I’m dying laughing how Mike Mercurio, aka Mr. OverRated, is named All-American for hitting mid to high 400’s against cheese pitchers in the Class B, just to throw out a name, Zack Graczyk of Carmel batted .613 against the best pitching in the section AA, and the best league in the section, 1-C. I dont understand how politics plays such a huge role in picking these awards because it’s obvious it has complete control over the entire selection. I hope all of the readers see it as it is and it’s all a joke and shouldnt be taken very seriously.

  11. HSBASEBALLFAN

Good point haha. You have to consider the level of competition. Graczyk is a perfect example.

  12. Baseball 101 JOKE

I hate to post negative comments about high school players but baseball101 is making ridiculous claims. Petrone is a very nice player but he cost Mahopac at least 3 wins because of his inability to play defense (JJ, Arlington, & Ketcham). Can we try and be realistic when we post things? On a side note players from class AA, A, B, & C are not compared against each other when picking All Americans. There are All Americans for each level of HS baseball. Zach Graczyck certainly deserved recognition.

  13. Easy Folks

No one cares about the all american thing. its ALL political…take it easy, none of these kids are going to get paid to play in the future. relax.

  14. Concerned Coach

Hey, when is the journal news going to get sued over this blog thing. Stop slandering KIDS you idiots. Let them enjoy the game and play as long as they can.

  15. thank you coach

You are so right. All of these blogs should be either dropped completely or monitored better by Journal News staff. Many of these posts are disgraceful and those writing them forget that they are about HIGH SCHOOL KIDS.

  16. Just Remember

Every fan has his/her favorite SS and a case can be made for a few when speaking about who is the best SS in AA .. Lots of good ones out there! .... But stay positive, and make your case by pointing out a great play or season stats (batting avg. etc), anything like that. Lay off the negative stuff though, that never helps!

  17. wow

Coach… get sued?? Look I am not for ANY bashing of players, but sueing the Journal? I think you are being a little ridiculous yourself. Such a product of today’s society with the sueing comment. I am dad/coach in my late 40’s and a comment like that would never have been made 15 years ago. Many of the comments are outrageous, but in reality does it effect the kids lives? I would hope not.

As much as I disagree with many of the comments, people have the right to speak, so you have the right to ignore it.

  18. mamk

and how dare you say that none of these kids are gonna get paid to play in the future. how the hell do you know? just watch.

  19. How?

how can you say that grazcyk is not an all american. He batted .613 with a slugging percentage over 1.000. He is incredible, i was told that he told his coach “what do i have to do? Hit a homerun?” next at bat graczyk gets up and hits a homerun

  20. really?

The fact that you admit to being an adult in your late forties who thinks comments like this won’t affect kids lives is scary. You should know better. Many of these comments are vicious and in case you have forgotten are written about KIDS in high school. These are not professional athletes who live in the public eye and whose lives are subject to public scrutiny. Many of the kids who are being discussed by what apparently are competitive, jealous idiots aren’t asking to have their names put out there. They do something newsworthy in HIGH SCHOOL and that makes them fair game for vicious attacks??? Be serious. It is easy for you to say that you have the right to ignore it but the point is that it is not right that it is being done in the first place. People can trash talk other people on these blogs and not have to take responsibility for their actions. Sadly, kids are hurt in the process.

  21. chill

everyone who is freaking out bc these r kids needs to relax. no one is saying mercurio is a bad player they are simply saying they thought others were better. also i was a player on a very good high school basketball team two years ago and had no problem with what people on the blog about me or my teammates its not a big deal.

  22. mustard

    This is ludicrous

  23. truth be told

do not listen to any wimpy fag who can’t handle the truth….these blogs are great at exposing self promoting frauds….if your sensibilities are hurt, get the hell off the blog…....defend your position with the facts and stop screaming that these are kids ruined for life by anonymous bloggers…...back it up or shut you whiner.

  24. 10548

olesczuk is easily 10 times better than mercurio…he led the section in almost everything…just shows how much being all american is just a matter of who you know

  25. Go go

Only a complete miserable loser would make a comment squashing any kids dream. Whether they make it or not…. They are already winners (competing on the field of play) , while you sit in a dark room, all envious and jealous, and type negativity about high school kids whose lives are about to take off.

  26. truth be told

having seen both olesczuk amd mercurio this season i would agree that olesczuk is the better all around 5 tool player.

haven’t seen graczyk , but his stats are scary….

don’t believe the hype or what influential dads or coaches can get done by way of awards.

we all know who are the best baseball players in the section ....we should not look at awards received to tell us what we already know.

  27. wow

really? Please stop with your know it all attitude. I read some of your other comments on another thread. And all you did was attack other bloggers, change screen names and write pointless comments. So, no offense but who are you to tell anyone how they should view certain aspects of life? You want to make a point then make one, but stop preaching like you are the only one that matters. Your authorative tone is a joke.

Oh and I still stand by the fact that name calling on a blog shouldn’t impact kids lives. Apparently I was raised differently than you and now so are my kids. I am not critizing you on your beliefs, so don’t criticize mine.

What gets lost is my main point and that is the word “sue” coming up around name calling from bloggers? Like this is some type of a crisis in our society. Trashing someone period is in appropriate, but that comes with athletics. I do not condon this behavior but I also think people are being a little to sensative.

  28. Josh Thomson

OK folks, let’s reign in the commentary please. I’d appreciate it.

Obviously, only so many players are going to make a list like this. While there may be others who are equally deserving, that doesn’t mean these weren’t two of the best players in the section. They both absolutely fall into that category.
