Aviles selected for All-American game

August
5

For all of the honors he has received the last few years, Robbie Aviles may never have been given as much respect as he was recently. The Suffern senior-to-be was picked for the 2009 Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic. Check out the event’s web site here.

The Aflac game will be played on Aug. 16 at Petco Park in San Diego. Aviles, who was one of 40 players selected, will play for the East team in the East-West game. He is one of 20 players on the East team. You can read his bio here.

The importance of the showcase is plainly obvious. Of the 40 players who participated in last year’s game, 13 were selected in the first round of the 2009 draft, including third-overall pick Donovan Tate. Former No. 1 picks Justin Upton, Matt Bush and Tim Beckham are among the event’s alumni.

I’ll have more in the paper and online about Aviles playing in the game during the coming days.

Aviles getting picked for this game is no surprise. They obviously know real talent.

What a great Honor. The Aflac Game is the top of the top. It is the biggest showcase there is and will be scouted by every pro team. Congratulations…

Wasn’t Vasami in the 2003 game?

  6. MHS

Yes, Vasami was in the 2003 all-american game. But back then it wasn’t called the Aflac All-American game. I believe it was the Sportslink AA game or something like that. I remember watching on Fox Sportsnet and future MLB players such as Andrew Miller and Lastings Milledge were in the game.

  7. Nope

It was not the same game back then. There is still a regular AA game played. This one is a joint venture between Perfect Game and Aflac. Aviles is the first player from our area selected.

  8. HS BB

All the players in the 2003 AA game were selected by Perfect Game too. It just didn’t have the aflac sponsor name until a few yrs later. I remember because being from Mamk I watched the game on fox snet and they said it a bunch of times. The main difference is the aflac game is mostly players going into their Sr year, and the game in 03 was all players who just completed their sr year. So the game was filled with guys that had been drafted high already (like miller, milledge, eric duncan yankees 1st rd pick, etc) and top college to-be kids like vasami. Good luck to aviles he deserves it and has a bright future ahead of him.

  13. who cares

  14. grumpy man

    you thought wrong

  15. hmm

This is why Mamaroneck is always so competive in High School sports. They have great youth programs.

  16. Joke

It’s a good thing this kid says he doesn’t believe in showcases and he and his dad don’t think they are necessary ! Dude he’s all over.

  17. Cardinal

does anyone know if aviles faced harper in the game?

  18. didnt

he didn’t face him, aviles pitched one inning and did good

  19. LoHud Scout

Aviles pitched the bottom of the second inning for the East. He retired Brian Ragira a top outfield prospect from Texas, Kellen Sweeney the brother of Ryan Sweeney of Oakland from Iowa, walked Marcus Littlewood mif from Utah and then forced game MVP Anthony Wolters to ground out to second. Aviles pitched 88-91 with an impressive change-up and curveball and has the potential to be a top 3 round draftbchoice if not first rounder.

  20. ehh

I dont think aviles should go first round. he does throw hard, he does have a good out pitch, but hes not a top prospect when it comes to dealing under pressure. i remember a few times through high school games this past year aviles struggled when put into certain situations with men on base or the game on the line. aviles will get drafted, but not in the top 5 rounds.

ehh shut up. u have no clue wat you are talking about
