Hirschberg commits to Manhattan

August
20

As you may have read, John Jay pitcher Jared Hirschberg became the latest LoHudder to commit from the class of 2010. He landed at a popular spot: Manhattan College.

The Jaspers has as much local flavor as any D-I baseball program. Coach Kevin Leighton is from Brewster. Third baseman Chad Salem is from Iona Prep (and Rye). Top-three starter Mike Giordano is from Fox Lane. Joe Rock from Kennedy (and Carmel), Nick Camastro and Ryan Wallner from Arlington and Erik Luksis from JJEF are all coming in this fall. Two outgoing seniors Mike Gazzola and Tom Costigan are both from the area, too.

Hirschberg will soon join that group. He said that the success Giordano, a walkon, had this spring really pushed him toward Manhattan.

“The thought that he walked on and had a very successful year and did well kind of made me believe that if I prove myself, I can get a lot of good innings in as a freshman,” Hirschberg said.

Hirschberg, a righty, impressed Leighton at Baseball Heaven on Long Island. He hit 88-89 consistently.

Hirschberg had other Division I interest from Stony Brook and St. John’s. He received serious offers from Pace and Bryant before deciding on Manhattan.

“I had a lot of decisions to make, a lot of options,” Hirschberg said. “I thought the best one that fit me was Manhattan. I liked the city environment and it’ss a very good Division I program.”

  5. you go kid

What a team those taconic rangers are a player is successful and the jealous frustrated and angry players talk i would never play with this team Im glad to play on the clippers this never happens go mr mercurio

  6. wow

    surprised he passed through clearinghouse

  7. T.J.

Gazzola has one more year of eligibility

  8. Bob 707

Just wanted to point it out i said this two posts ago and people doubted me.. Same thing with Steve Green.

  9. seriously

Well said you go kid. Those ranger players are such jealous people in general. I can’t believe the disgusting comments made on the blogs. The kid accomplished a goal not many people can say they have accomplished, and players and parents come on here to just trash talk and let there jealousy come out. If your going to comment on the blogs at all, how about you say congrats and good luck instead of the crap most people come up and say

  10. wait

Why is everybody assuming that everything negative said about any of the players on the Taconic Rangers is coming from another Ranger?

  11. Ignore

    Congrats to all!

Congratulations to any and all kids who work hard to achieve their goal of playing at the college level. No matter the team.

Taconic Rangers are a class organization. My recommendation is for the Rangers’ parents and kids to stay away from commenting on things. Comments usually come from ‘unrealistic, dilusional, excuse-makers’; not from people who stay focused on their goals.

There are disgruntalled people in any organization…including the Clippers, New York Nine, Bayside Yankees, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Congress, the Senate, and in school. It is not about the organization; it is about the unhappy person.

Those people have to blame someone for personal dissappointment. Usually the winners are easy targets.

As for the Rangers, keep it up. There is a reason you guys are selected to play in the truly ‘elite’ tournaments in North and South Carolina (not the tournaments that anyone can attend); but the true “invite only” ones.

Those who don’t understand this will criticize. That only means you are winners.

  12. the facts don't lie

    Ignore
way to speak your mind,if there is any team that is deserving of high praise and support each other on and off the field it’s the Taconic Rangers and the coaching staff, here is a team that in the last two years put out college prospects

at almost every position, the list is very impressive if i may say so myself,D1,D2 AND D3 colleges have come calling, here’s just a few off there web site, Panik(ST.JOHNS) Ciocchi(BINGHAMTON) Camastro(MANHATTAN) Iacomini(SOUTH CAROLINA) Carona(C.W.POST) Swertfager(C.W.POST) GRACYK Barbelotto(ST.THOMAS AQUINAS) Green(BOSTON COLLEGE)and i’m sure that those boys have nothing but support and high praise for each other and there accomplishment…......GO RANGERS keep up the good work and continued success.

  13. the facts don't lie

    GRACYKSORRY ZACH.

  14. Change of Subject.

Is it true that next years league alignments will be teams across all classes? Does anybody know how the leagues align?

By the way congratulations to anybody who plays at the next level, no matter who you play for, summer team or HS team. There are a lot of good players (even great players) who will never play another inning of baseball in their life and there are a lot of kids who have the desire and play further.

    Good for all of you.

Jealous players, parents and self promoting coaches please tone down, it’s HIGH SCHOOL baseball, these kids are 14-18 yrs old.

  15. well said

change of subject said it…HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL..and its westchester county new york…not that competitive so calm down everyone. if you want to be so competitive move to florida or texas.

  16. PG ALL STAR GAME

Hirschberg will be participating in today’s 2009 Perfect Game Northeast All Star Game along with high school teammate Tyler Curry. Ryan Pennell(Rye Neck)and Anthony Simon(Suffern Don Boscoe)will also play for the 2010 New York Team. Mamaroneck’s Scott Hagan was selected to play for the 2011 Northeast team. Here are the rosters:

    http://www.perfectgame.org/northeast/events/09_08_28_ne_top_games/rosters.aspx

  17. questionman

how much does it cost to participate in that perfect game event? sounds like fun if the per player cost is reasonable. some of there other stuff is a real waste of money though.

  18. jaydad

Jared is a hard working good kid with a lot of upside. Congrats to you big guy. My son graduated last year and I can say first hand that there are a lot of petty and jealous people out there. Jared, if yo’re coach is smart he’ll let you dh when you’re not pitching. Congrats to you and crazy Kenny. :o )

  19. Show

A Perfect Game Showcase runs $ 595 but it is worth it, especially if you’re a kid that has not been playing for what could be considered a high profile team. If you achieved a good rating for the event, you could then get invited to participate in other PG events (higher level showcases as well tournaments) In general, it helps to get your name out there to some extent. Not a be all to end all, but just part of the equation when you’re trying to get recruited. Something like 90 % of the players that get drafted by MLB appear in PG events.

  20. u can't leave the house

    Congratulations Jared
Had the pleasure of watching you pitch twice.
You will do a great job at the next level.
Work hard and all the best to you.

  21. Ignore

What is wrong is when a player/parents committ to a team so that they can get showcased; get their scholarship, in part because of the reputation of team; which draws the coaches; then the kid/parents abandon the team for the next tournaments.

    NOT CLASSY!!!!

If you are a scholarship player (especially a pitcher), you should stay with the team and help the teammates, who helped you, get noticed and offers. Unless you are a position player; then maybe you step aside to let another kid get the showcase time. At the very least, speak with the coach and discuss this issue.

You shouldn’t walk a away right before the next showcase tournament!

    NOT CLASSY!

  22. Oh! Yeah!

    To Ignore…

    AMEN!!!

  23. wrong

These kids don’t go to showcase tournaments trying to win games or help their teammates get noticed..They go with the main objective of doing their best so they can get noticed. Once they get their scholarship, wish the other kids good luck and do whatever you want.

  24. Very Wrong

wrong – not the case. Just because a kid gets his doesnt mean you walk away. Not every team has multiple back ups. If your ss gets his and leaves and now some lesser player is there it effects everything the team does and makes them a weaker team. Errors at positions like that effect every pitcher. Better players can help make lesser players look good. Its not about winning or losing its about helping the guys who helped you.
Believe me, college coaches frown on kids leaving. Many come to see the kid play even after they commit and want to see how they are progressing. I know because I’ve seen it. It may not effect the kids scholly, but it will effect how they are viewed by others.

  25. saul sanders

jared let his team down end of story

  26. Straight Talk

    To ‘wrong’...

Maybe in your world that is what happens. However, MOST (not all) parents that I know teach their kids the value of committment; which goes beyond baseball.

As one who has been around the ‘showcase’ world for many years, I must give an observation. The kids who let their teams down usually are the biggest whiners, the parents are constantly ‘yapping’ about the coach and team, and complain when other players make a mistake. And, of course, there is always some other reason for their own miscues.

On the other hand, I have personally seen some outstanding ballplayers continue to play, after they verbally committed, specifically to help their teammates achieve their goal. On the Taconic Rangers, this is specifically discussed.

‘Ignore’ got it right- the way kids handle these situations says more about how they are raised as young men; rather than the specific organization or showcase baseball.

Don’t know the whole story, but trust me, the kids know who is a good teammate and who is out ONLY for themselves.

  27. congrats

Congratulations Jared I have watched you play for years you deserve to play at a D-1 level. Let the jealous people use this way to vent there own frustrations and unhappiness it means nothing. Anytime someone achieves something positive there are negatives said about them. Anyone who reads these go back over the blogs from this year and see the constant negative talk.
this is a website of accomplishments it is a shame that so many negative comments are made.

  28. Clipper Coach

Here is another local going D1… Josy Espinal from Beacon has committed to U Albany. Congrats to Josy as well as Jared

  29. Battle at The Border

Port Chester will be hosting the Battle at the Border Elite Eight on October 3rd & 4th.All of the teams & schedules should be posted sometime this weekend.

  30. here we go again

I know that everyone has moved on to football but for anyone that read the bit in the Journal News today on fall baseball, all I can say is give me a break! Colin Moran hoped that coach Gallo would notice him? The kid’s brother played at Iona for four years and walked on to UNC. He just signed a pro contract and one writer for the Journal that covered his being drafted wrote that he was the best high school pitcher he ever covered.Of all the sophomores that have played fall ball, he was randomly chosen to be discussed? The favoritism is so apparent and sickening when it comes to Iona and now Bernie Mahoney is getting some credit for the CHSAA fall league. What a joke! Ron Patnosh from St. Raymond’s in the Bronx is one of the true pioneers of this league and a DECENT man more importantly. He also has had an impressive run in high school baseball WITHOUT promoting his sons AND realizes that we do get nice weather in the Spring. At least one non-Iona player got some attention in the article, for a change. Believe it or not, there are some excellent athletes that DO NOT go to Iona.

  31. BM

I’ve seen that also, but he does it so well.

  32. wow

“here we go again” you are an embarassment to the lohud blogs. They probably chose Moran for an interview because he is the best hitter in the CHSAA and has probably played either 3 or 4 years of fall ball. So why dont you calm down and watch the way you use the term true pioneers. Did your st. raymonds guy make his way across a nation to create and preserve a new found future? The answer is no, therefore he is not a true pioneer and never will be. But I do have to agree with you on one thing, why do reporters always go to one of the best programs in the area with some of the best players for answers, aka Iona Prep, those kinda things just drive me crazy.

  33. ok wow

Maybe YOU should calm down, take off your Iona blinders, and realize a couple of things. First, unless Moran is in his fifth yeat at Iona, it is impossible that he has already played four years of fall ball. Secondly, he did not play fall ball as a freshman (most don’t), so no he hasn’t already played three years of fall ball either. In case this confuses you, this year he is a senior, he did not play fall ball as a freshman so, this year will be his third year of fall ball, get it? Simple, isn’t it? So, before you call anyone an embarrassment, get your facts straight and learn simple arithmetic. Oh and by the way, I know you find it hard to believe but not everyone in Westchester county drinks the Iona Kool-Aid. Thinking that everyone does, kinda drives me crazy.

  34. wow

You have proven to be an idiot for the second time. I said 3 or 4 years which means i am not sure and it could be either. So before we jump to conclussions you should take your iona blinders off and stop giving them added attention by brining them up in these blogs. Sorry that no attention is given to st. raymonds and/ or you son who probably got cut from iona and now attends his local public school.

  35. ok wow

change your screen name to angry wow lolol

  36. wondering

is jjcr even going to be good this year after they lost a lot of their players?
