Stepinac wins Bronx-Westchester division (UPDATED)
Stepinac beat Fordham Prep 6-2 today at Manhattanville to clinch a piece of the coveted CHSAA Bronx-Westchester division. It is Stepinac’s third straight division championship and fourth in six years. Iona Prep, which beat Mount 7-0 today, will share the division championship but loses a tiebreaker for the No. 1 playoff seed.
Stepinac scored four in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. Steve Martinez doubled in two hits with a pair of RBI and Steven DePompeis also drove in two. Donato Signore got the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
Next up for the Crusaders is the seeding tournament. The winner of each division competes in a four-team tournament to obtain the top four seeds in the intersectional tournament. Stepinac is the lowest of the four division winners, meaning it will play top-seeded Xaverian on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Iona Prep is the No. 2 in the Bronx-Westchester after today’s win over Mount St. Michael. That means it will be seeded 5-8 in the intersectional tournament. It will play one of the lower seeded teams in a best-of-3 series starting on Thursday.
Fordham Prep, the No. 3 team, has to play a play-in game on Monday against one of the 4-seeds to get into that best 2-of-3 intersectional.
