There were three big games today which each ended in dramatic fashion. Two of which came at the Northeast Elite Tournament, setting up an all-Section 1 semifinal (I’ll be at North Rockland to cover the game).
Fox Lane finally got the pitching performance that it had been waiting for, and it came from a relatively unlikely source. Coming into the season, it seemed that TJ Hallock and Robby Seraita would be the Foxes top two starters, but Julian Haddad came up huge today in a 2-1 win over George Washington, which came into the game ranked No. 5 in NYC by the New York Post and No. 2 among PSAL teams.
Haddad pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven while allowing just the lone run. Shutting down a team of that caliber is an eye-opener, and it’s just the kind of momentum boost that the struggling Foxes were looking for. Michael Johnston, who hits ninth in this deep Fox Lane lineup, drove in both runs with an inside the park homer in the third.
The Foxes will meet North Rockland in the semis tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. after the Red Raiders came up with a big win of their own. Joe Anselmi returned after missing time due to a concussion and threw a gem in a 4-3 win over Fordham Prep that went into extras. Anselmi pitched all eight innings, allowing just one earned run and six hits. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI, including a game-tying single with two outs in the seventh to force extra innings. Mike Rastelli won it with a walk-off single in the eighth while Elbin Martinez went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
The other walkoff affair that we had on Friday was New Rochelle’s 1-0 win over Pearl River in eight innings. The Huguenots went with ace Andrew Zigmont, who left the game after 5.1 shutout innings because he landed awkwardly while trying to field a ball. It was precautionary, as Zigmont is still lined up to start next Thursday at Mamaroneck. He gave up two hits and struck out six.
Kevin Considine was equally as impressive for the Pirates, allowing two hits and striking out five over seven innings without allowing a run. New Ro finally broke through in the eighth, with Chris Elefante singling and stealing a base with one out. With two outs, Jared Wiesel knocked in Elefante with a walkoff single. New Rochelle’s Jayson Gray was the only player from either team with multiple hits, as he went 2 for 3 with a double to continue his hot start.
