Dan DeFrancesco’s college notebook this week focused on SUNY Cortland, which is the No. 1 team in the nation in Division III and features six locals.
SUNY Cortland, currently the number one team in the country, according to D3baseball.com, has six players on its roster that grew up in the lower Hudson Valley.
Carmel’s Zach Graczyk (pictured to the right pitching for Carmel in 2009) has started every game for the Red Dragons. The senior outfielder leads Cortland in batting average (.461), on-base percentage (.542), hits (35), doubles (10) and runs (25). Graczyk, who is a team captain, was recently named SUNYAC player of the week.
Joining Graczyk in the outfield is sophomore Donny Castaldo. The Fox Lane graduate is batting .359 with 11 runs and eight RBI. Castaldo is also sporting a percent fielding percentage.
Fellow former Fox Tim Panetta has split time at catcher. The junior has played in 12 games, making 10 starts, and has nine hits and six RBI.
John Jay graduate Anthony Iacomini has seen time in the infield. In 15 games the junior has eight runs and four RBI.
Freshman Brandon Serio has made six appearances on the mound for Cortland. The Fox Lane graduate has a 3-1 record with a 1.16 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched.
Fellow freshman Matt Adipietro, a Hastings graduate, has appeared in two games in the outfield for the Red Dragons.
Weekly honors: Bates’ Tom Baroni, a Kennedy graduate, was named NESCAC player of the week in men’s baseball.
Rockland Community College’s Dominick Kulbaba, a Suffern graduate, was named Mid-Hudson Conference athlete of the week.
Putnam Valley’s Hannah Tavella, a junior attacker at University of New England, was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference offensive player of the week.
Concordia’s Cristian Fiorito, an Iona Prep graduate, and Mike Barone, a Salesian graduate, were named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference player and rookie of the week, respectively. White Plains’ Peter Martinez, a sophomore at Dominican, was named the CACC co-pitcher of the week.
Rutgers’ freshman goalie Kris Alleyne, a Clarkstown South graduate, was named to the Big East men’s lacrosse honor roll.
Lehigh’s Alexandra Fitzpatrick, a Lakeland graduate, and Holy Cross’ Chris Cousin, a Somers’ graduate, were named to the Patriot League lacrosse honor roll.
