A few quick thoughts this morning…
• After all of the talk of parity throughout the season, we didn’t see a single real “upset” in the first round. The closest thing to it was probably Irvington’s win over a Keio team that was a finalist in Class B last season, but that was only a nine-seed beating an eight. The only double-digit seed to advance to the quarterfinals in any class was No. 10 Albertus Magnus in Class B. There were plenty of close calls for some of the highly seeded teams, but all of them found ways to survive and advance. The seeds pretty much held true.
• It was very interesting to see how teams handled their pitching in the first round. Some, such as Clarkstown North in Class AA and Pelham in Class A, either pulled their aces early or rolled the dice and held back them altogether. In both cases, it worked out, leaving each team in good shape for today with their top pitchers ready to go. Others, such as Mamaroneck in Class AA and Eastchester and Somers in Class A, used their top two or three pitchers on Wednesday and come into the quarterfinals with some uncertain pitching situations. We’ll see how it all plays out today.
• While I didn’t duplicate my 13 for 13 effort on Tuesday in the outbracket round, I maintained a solid batting average by correctly picking 20 of the 26 first round games on Wednesday. In terms of my bracket, I lost two semifinalists in Kennedy (Class AA) and Pearl River (Class A), but all of my picks for the finals remain alive. With those two teams out, here’s who I’m taking in the games that I had them winning: Arlington over John Jay-EF in Class AA, and Byram Hills over Sleepy Hollow in Class A. Click here to see all of my playoff picks.
The forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms, so today’s action is very much up in the air. I’ll keep you guys posted, but if one game gets called in any class, so must the rest in that particular class. There’s a great slate of games to choose from, but I’ll be heading to Tappan Zee to see the top-seeded Dutchmen host No. 8 Somers in a Class A matchup. These teams met in the section final in 2011, with TZ prevailing. Now, they’ll meet two years later in a matchup of the Tuskers’ powerful lineup against the Dutchmen’s strong pitching staff.
