There has been a lot of buzz in the greater New York area about this year’s MLB all-star game being played at Citi Field, and the LoHud area now has another reason to be excited. Mahopac grad and Tampa Bay Rays farmhand C.J. Riefenhauser has been selected to play in the MLB Futures Game, which will be played on Sunday at Citi Field.
The left-handed reliever has been lights out this season. He had a 0.51 ERA with 11 saves and 48 strikeouts in 53 innings for the Rays’ Double-A affiliate in Montgomery, Alabama, which earned him a promotion to Triple-A Durham. Those are the kind of numbers that will put you on the fast track to the majors, and we all know that lefties out of the pen are coveted by Major League teams.
You can find the full roster for the Futures Game on MLB.com. I’m working at Yankee Stadium again tonight, but my plan is to get in touch with Riefenhauser in the next few days to do a story. That should be running sometime this weekend.
