After beginning the week with a loss to Nanuet, the league title hopes for Albertus Magnus were looking slim. But Christian Conklin had other ideas.
Known mainly as a pitcher, the senior showed that he’s also capable of carrying the team with his bat. The only way that the Falcons could capture a title in a league filled with larger Class A schools was if they won their final two games against Nanuet and Tappan Zee, and they got it done in dramatic fashion.
After a 15-3 rout over Nanuet in their second meeting to keep the possibility alive, Magnus went down early against TZ on Friday. Trailing by two runs entering the sixth, Conklin stepped up to the plate representing the tying the run. The left-handed batter pulled a long ball over the the fence in right field to tie the game, with the Falcons scoring on an error in the seventh to seize a title that nearly slipped away earlier in the week.
It was probably about as clutch of a hit as you can have during the regular season, but Conklin got it done all week. He finished 7 for 11 with two walks, a double, a triple, the big homer, four runs scored and six RBI, while also throwing three innings against TZ. And it looks like his efforts may have helped lead Albertus Magnus to the No. 1 seed in Class B.
Other candidates this week included Keio’s Shutaro Wakayama, White Plains’ Daniel Lotito, Byram Hills’ Frankie Vesuvio, Ossining’s Sean Trenholm, Harrison’s Dean McCarthy, North Rockland’s Dan Wirchansky, Early College’s DJ Smith, Lakeland’s Trevor Mason, Ketcham’s Dylan D’Anna, Putnam Valley’s Nick Marro and Pearl River’s Danny Campbell.
