With all of the focus that’s been on the high school playoffs — and we have three teams still vying for titles in Mamaroneck (Class AA), Byram Hills (Class A) and Salesian (CHSAA) — I didn’t want to lose sight of the fact that the MLB Draft begins on Monday night at 7. You can track the picks by clicking here.
The most sure-fire local prospect is Iona College right-hander Mariano Rivera III. Yes, we’re talking about the son of the greatest closer of all-time. He’s currently ranked 142nd by Baseball America among draft prospects. Our buddy Josh Thomson caught up with Rivera last month, who has been making his own name with his recent success. He was also named the MAAC Pitcher of the Year this season.
Rivera seems like he’ll be the first local to come off of the board, and he’s the only guy with local ties that I could find listed in BA’s top 500 rankings. But we usually have a few guys emerge in the later rounds, so I’ll try to monitor it as closely as I can. If you know of anyone who gets drafted in the next few days, please either drop a line in the comments section or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I want to make sure that we don’t miss anyone.
