Stepinac made a surprise announcement — at least, it was a surprise to me — over the weekend, making it public that coach Pat Duffy was retiring and assistant Keith Richardson will be taking over. The fact that the word came out so quickly after the season and that the successor was already in place leads me to believe that Duffy had been planning this, but they kept it quiet until now.
Duffy had a run of success with the Crusaders after taking over in 2005, winning 205 games and four CHSAA AA Division titles, including three straight from 2008-10. They were coming off of a year in which they went 17-9 and just missed out on the CHSAA Championship Tournament.
Richardson graduated from Mount St. Michael in 1997 before going onto play baseball at Pace University and has been a member of Stepinac coaching staff for pretty much all of Duffy’s tenure.
