Tonight will mark an historic occasion for Salesian High School, as the Eagles will begin their first ever CHSAA ‘AA’ Division Championship Series at 7 p.m. at Fordham University against Monsignor Farrell.
Talking to some other coaches and writers this past week, no one can remember a time when Salesian baseball was this relevant. The Eagles won a CHSAA title back in 2004 when they were in the ‘B’ Division, but anyone who follows the CHSAA will tell you that making it in the big, bad ‘AA’ Division is a completely different animal. Salesian is a small school that has lived in the shadows of teams like Iona Prep, Fordham Prep and Stepinac for years, but no more. Led by an ultra-talented senior class, the Eagles are as good as any team in the area this season.
I should also note, to avoid confusion, that while Salesian’s championship series with Farrell is a best-of-three, a win tonight would secure a title for the Eagles. The reason for that is because they beat Farrell in a playoff game last week, so technically they’re up 1-0 in the series. If Salesian loses tonight, they’ll play again on Friday at Fordham in a winner-takes-all game. Surely, the Eagles would rather close it out tonight, when ace Nicky Gennarelli will most likely be on the mound.
I’ll also be at Fordham for tonight’s game, so follow me on Twitter @vzmercogliano for live updates. You can track every pitch on iScore using the log-in info below:
