After being one out away from winning the CHSAA ‘AA’ championship the previous night, Salesian fell to Monsignor Farrell 4-2 in the decisive game Friday night at St. John’s University.
Farrell, which entered the tournament as the eighth and final seed, scored twice in the first and led throughout. Salesian loaded the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but the Lions captured the first title in program history after a line drive from Anderson Lora resulted in a game-ending double play.
Andy Camilo and Luis Arias had RBI doubles for the Eagles. Brandon Bautista started and ace Nicky Gennarelli was able to pitch the seventh after reopening a cut on his throwing hand in the previous game.
This will be a tough one to get over for Salesian after coming so close to seizing the title on Thursday, but it goes without saying that this group — particularly their 12 seniors — really put the program back on the map in the CHSAA the past few years. The Eagles had never previously reached the AA championship series.
