A month or two ago I posted on the status of Sean Giblin, who'll miss the entire 2008 season while rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Reporter Brian Heyman followed up in his weekly minor league feature and has some details. The former Pearl River stud is stuck watching baseball in Bradenton, Fla. as he gets his [...]

Empire State Games begin with tonight's opening ceremony, which has been moved indoors at Binghamton U because of a bad forecast. No word on whether sailing has been moved to the water fountain.
Like every year we'll bring as much of the Games to you as possible. Don't expect the kind of wall-to-wall coverage we had [...]

New York State just released its all-state team. Just from looking at who was selected, it seems like the selections were made much more with the regular season in mind than playoffs. For example, Dan Zlotnick of Somers made fifth team in Class A even though Somers won the section. Four other Section 1 guys [...]

Finally, the spring All-Star (Westchester/Putnam) and All-County (Rockland) sections are out. Find them as a special section in today's Journal News. Sure, spring season ended 764 days ago. The important thing is they're here. As always, a lot of time and effort was put into these, so we hope you like them. The spring bloggers [...]

We're only two days away from the all-star sections in Friday's newspaper. I saw the blueprints a couple days ago and the art looks as good as ever. Hopefully everyone picks up a copy so we can discuss it on here.
We've looked at Rockland's pitchers and outfielders and the likely candidates to fill those spots. [...]

Next up is the outfielders. The last two years have been lean ones for Rockland's outfielders, at least compared to the infield. Granted, the infield has five players to the outfield's three. And in high school the best athletes usually — not always , but usually — play shortstop or catcher. But I feel like [...]

Everybody who works a local beat at The Journal News has been finishing up their all-star selections over the last few days. It's our big project after the season ends. There are coaches to consult, notes to pore over, naps to take when the boss is out of the office. Wait, um, not that last [...]

Bad news for former Rockland Athlete of the Season Sean Giblin. The former Pearl River hurler underwent shoulder surgery last Wednesday, according to Pearl River coach Bruce Miller, and will be out until at least September. This effectively ends his short-season 2008 in the Pittsburgh minor league season. He probably would have been at State [...]

As we're eating dinner in Binghamton on Saturday night, Josh and Alex and I start filling each other in on our respective games. Each of us has a story to tell—stories about clutch hits and pitchers coming back on short rest and ultimately, victory celebrations. It occured to me how unusual that was, to have [...]

Banner year for Section 1 baseball as Mamaroneck, Keio, and finally Kennedy will all make the trip to Binghamton for state semifinals. All three won their regional finals by a mile too. Mamaroneck won 13-3, Keio won 7-1 (although I guess it was close until late), and Kennedy won 11-2.
The Gaels prevailed today on basically [...]
