Section 1 = Harlem Globetrotters. Section 9 = Washington Generals

Just a quick note about Section 9 to share. Josh and I were just talking about how Section 1 mops the floor with Section 9 in almost every sport. That first round of regionals always feels like a bye for Section 1 because you know 1 is going to win.

Baseball has been a perfect example [...]

Anything but overpowering, Dobbs moves on anyway

June
8

What the Dobbs bats did today against Pine Plains was a world away from what they did to Kennedy. And what Zach Avalos did today was a world away from what he’s done all season.

Who cares.

As light as they hit, they still produced enough runs. As few batters as Avalos struck out, he still ended [...]

Scouting the regional semifinal opponents

June
7

In Class AA it was No. 2 Kingston defeating Warwick 9-3 behind ace Matt Petro. Petro was only able to start because of a Friday rainout that gave him an extra day of rest. He ended up throwing 120 pitches in the win. You can read about it here.

In Class B, top-seeded Pine Plains almost [...]

Stepinac beats Fordham Prep

June
7

Stepinac is moving on to the CHSAA semifinals after a 5-3 win over Fordham Prep this afternoon at Fordham.

Steven Martinez hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth that gave a downtrodden Stepinac squad new life. Fordham put up a 3-spot in the top of the inning that left the Crusaders down 3-2. [...]

Upset of the tournament belongs to Dobbs Ferry

June
5

Standing along the third-base line among a crowd of Kennedy supporters, I could feel the desperation around me. They couldn’t believe what was happening. Neither could I.

From the word go, Dobbs Ferry was all over Kennedy. The same Kennedy that scored 20 runs on four separate occasions. The same Kennedy that scored in double figures [...]

Jake’s finals predictions

June
4

What sport is this? Is this basketball? 1 vs 2 in Class AA, A, and B? That’s not supposed to happen in baseball. Hot pitchers are supposed to cause upsets. Stacked lineups are supposed to go cold. Suicide squeezes are supposed to break hearts.

Yet here we are, the top two teams in each class ready [...]

Ruining young arms 200 pitches at a time

June
3

Remember the controvery over U of Texas reliever Austin Wood throwing 169 pitches in a College World Series game a few days ago? That was nothing.

Minnesota high school senior Lars Anderson on Saturday threw 201 pitches in a state semifinal win. When told he would not be coming out for the 14th inning—wait, his coach [...]

Dobbs’s exciting victory in pictures

June
3

For a game that lasted 90 minutes (by far the shortest I’ve been to this year) Dobbs Ferry-Nanuet had a lot going on. There were game-tying rallies by one team and game-winning hits by the other. There were ground rule disputes and outfielders climbing hills. There was even a delay of game caused by a [...]

Jake’s semifinal predictions

June
2

Amazing how the top seeds have done so well in this tournament. All four No. 1s are still alive. Three of the No. 2s are alive, the exception being Blind Brook’s loss to No. 3 North Salem in eight innings. Three of the No. 3s are alive.

Beacon is really the only interloper in the semifinals. [...]

Jake’s quarterfinal predictions

June
1

I went 10-6 in the first round, which is pretty bad. Baseball can be tough to predict—when you lean on the favorites you get crazy upsets and when you take a chance on the underdog you get all chalk. If anybody can think of another good excuse I’ll take that too. Basically I just stunk. [...]
