There is nothing the critics can tag Mamaroneck with anymore. The Tigers are the kings of Section 1. They might be one of the greatest local champions of all time. How many Class AA teams went 24-1 against the section, won the title easily, 12-1, and had as rough a bracket as Mamaroneck?
It’d be hard [...]

Oh baby! This is it, what the whole season’s been building to. Everything after sectionals is a bonus. Lose in the first round of states and you’ll still always be able to say you were better than the teams you played all year. There are some fantastic matchups here, especially in the big classes.

How does a John Jay team that averaged over 10 runs a game get nearly shut out in a sectional semifinal? Only Jim Brennan knows the answer. Brennan nearly three-hit the Indians before a pitch count of about 120 ended his day with two outs to go. Reliever Wade Poppe sandwiched a couple of strikeouts [...]

I went 9-3 in the quarterfinals, bringing my overall record to 18-8. Not great, not terrible. I need a good semifinal round. Unfortunately, I think this round will be the most chaotic. Most teams are on their third starters, which in high school are notoriously unreliable. Look for a lot of runs, which can produce [...]

Thanks for your patience. Just got my story in.
For those who didn’t read my original brief message, Nanuet’s Steve Prosapio was thrown out of today’s 11-5 win over Rye Neck. Section 1 rules dictate that any tossed player must sit out the next game, regular season or playoffs. That means Prosapio can’t play in tomorrow’s [...]

I went 10-5 in the first round; Josh was 12-5. He picked the Lourdes/Beacon game, which I didn’t because I know nothing about them, and the Pearl River/Eastchester game, which I didn’t because I was covering. However, I should point out that in my head I had Eastchester winning by about a 7-3 score, and [...]

As the Rockland baseball beat writer I’m sensitive to the success of baseball on the left bank of the Hudson. Last year was a banner one. North Rockland went to the state finals, and were a great story to boot because of the low seed. Pearl River made the sectional final, then had a player [...]

Chalk up another one for Eastchester. That’s 15 of 16 for the once-moribund Eagles. It’s a group that, at 1-8 in April, needed a lot of luck to make the playoffs and a minor miracle to move seven games over .500. Which, of course, is exactly where they sit after today’s 7-3 first-round win over [...]
